CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Joshua (Giorgio Cantarini) thinks that the American tank liberating the concentration camp is really the prize he won for winning the game.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this WW II tragicomedy, famed Italian funnyman Roberto Benigni (The Monster) portrays Guido, who moves during the '30s from the country to a Tuscan town, where he is entranced by schoolteacher Dora (Nicoletta Braschi, Benigni's real-life wife). Dora likes Guido, but she remains faithful to her pompous fiancé, so Guido has an uphill struggle. Meanwhile, anti-Semitic attitudes lead to attacks against Guido's Jewish uncle (Giustino Durano). Leaping ahead to five years later, during WW II, Guido and Dora are married and have a son Giosue (Giorgio Cantarini). After they are imprisoned in a concentration camp, Guido goes to elaborate lengths to keep his son from understanding the truth of their situation. He tells the boy that they are competing with others to win an armored tank -- so everything from food shortages to tattoos is explained as necessary for participation in the contest.

The director of the movie, which is actually the dad in this movie, stated he wanted to make a holocaust movie where the audience can laugh and cry. He also said he was inspired by his father, a Jewish holocaust survivor who lived in the camps for 3 years. His father had nightmares till his mother suggested he explain the Holocaust to the then young Roberto Benigni. His father explained in a light hearted way, which explains the "game" in the movie. :) On the side note, Dora is really his wife in real life, too! It explains the chemistry between the two. ;)

Benigni speech when he won the Oscar he referenced the US soldiers and the other great movie that year....Saving Private Ryan. For their sacrifice as depicted in Mr Spielbergs movie we can truly say life is beautiful. Not a dry eye in the place or at home.

I didn't feel sad that guido sacrificed himself. I felt sad because Joshua still thinks his dad is still alive waiting at home for him because Guido told Joshua that the people that lose the game return home and he's not gonna be home :(

PlazmaCow Guido didn’t sacrifice himself. He left joshua in there because he went to look for his wife to see if she was okay and that they didn’t take her to be killed and then he got caught.

This film was one of the best foreign films I have seen. This has nothing to do with the war or the events of history. This has to do with a father forced to be sent to a concentration camp with his son. The father uses comedy as he did before to comfort and protect his son. He thinks off of his feet to get his son out of danger. Comedy is his weapon and he portrayed it very well. This had nothing to do with the war or anything else. This had to do with a father not letting this imprisonment make his son think life is over because to him no matter what circumstances he is in, life is beautiful. He sacrifices his life to protect his son and did what ever he could to make sure his son survived. Great picture!

@@TheGS013 getting killed is not the all sacrifice. He lived there in pain but never let those pain come to his face just for his son, he shielded his son from the horror. I think that's the sacrifice a dad does to a son. So don't think that eating those bullets is all sacrifice he did.

SO touched to hear the impact that the American soilder had on so many here, because even though I am not that actor, that is my voice! Prior to Life is Beautiful being released, I was hired by Miramax in NYC to dub (voice-over) the part of the American soilder. I added the sounds when the soilider lifts the boy onto the tank - so thrilled all of that made it into the movie. So thankful to have the smallest part in this incredible movie and be the only English speaking voice ever heard on screen!

Can i be honest? I'm not sure why I'm crying at this ending. I don't know if it's because I'm happy that the little boy was able to survive and be with his mamma and that life is beautiful or because of the father's death and sacrifice and what he did to spare his son. That's real bravery.

the father didnt have to die. he left the room at night wid son to search wife. had he stayed back like other inmates, he would have safely been out at daybreak with son, to search his wife. it ws his fear of being separated frm wife permnently, that actually separated him forever.

really similar to Ellie Weisel's own experience. He and his father could've stayed in the camp at the hospital but they chose to leave on the march in fear of the Nazis burning down the camp.. then the camp was liberated 2 days after they left...

I love how kind and friendly the American soldier is. After being surrounded by so much death and destruction and fear, this is the kind of American soldier you want to see roll up to save the day. Not the jingoistic military jerk but the strong but kind man just trying to help out, and the kind that gained these Americans the title The Greatest Generation

For them seeing a kid was seeing a piece of home in a sea of hatred and violence a child with their innocence is one of the greatest things they can see. It reminds them of what they are fighting for and gives them a momentary break from the hell surrounding them.

I watched this for the 2nd time in class today (because we are learning about the Holocaust) and I literally almost cried, but I had to hold it in. No, I didn't almost cry because the Dad died, or because how cute the little boy was... but because of how good hearted Guido was to his wife and son. He treated his wife like a queen and always made her feel good. And, he pretty much sacrificed and risked everything to keep his boy happy during all of it. What made him a good character was that he always happy and positive about everything. I wish that more people in the world could be like Guido.

This is my favorite scene in movie history. When the tank appears after a long period of silence and Giosue (Joshua) smiles, the story is wrapped up in a bow. He made it through the Holocaust without being traumatized due to Guido's wit and sacrifice, and he won the tank. The freeze frame when he is happy with his mother, the voice-over, the ride to his mother... it feels like a victorious reunion, yet feels bittersweet from Guido's death. It is such an intelligent scene from an intelligent move, and it deserves all the praise for how great it is.

Personally, my favorite part of the movie is odd, but it makes sense: Guido is not in the tank. They do not let the ending be completely good, as this was the Holocaust. Guido sacrificed himself for his family and succeeded in doing so, and this scene presses that into your head.

Anytime I see real footage or even movies of the Allies liberating the camps, I feel a huge sense of pride of what the Allies accomplished. It may have been the greatest accomplishment ever.

And some allied soldiers are very angry and frustrated that they, alongside vengeful camp prisoners, round up wounded German soldiers (and some SS bastards) and shoot them. -Dachau, 29 April 1945. In some other camps, other prisoners are malnourished that they died after getting re-feed. -Liberation of Auschwitz. Not all camp liberations have happy endings. It's really a horror story.

Aidan Mousavi this was a true story he was trying to keep his young boy alive and keep him hidden. He had to show his son everything was ok and face death in the face without showing fear. I thought no he was incredibly brave. And I’m still amazed his son managed to escape the gas room.

Guido not only managed to save his sons life but saved his innocence as well. He practically looked past all the horrors and saved himself the PTSD thanks to his fathers antics. A remarkable thing indeed. What a good/sad movie this was.

Anger? I think the point was that if he wasn’t able to pull off his game scheme, his son would essentially be dead. Instead, he’s alive and his mother can explain what happened and help him cope and grow, knowing that his father essentially saved his life.

MrPjw5 we do understand what it is about, in fact by joking about it we are showing that we understand it. The movie is about being positive in the darkest of situations. By making a joke about this dark but yet positive moment we are effectively showing we understand the movie. Your one of those people who when they hear the word, holocaust, gets all down and depressed. Are we supposed to be in tears that they are being liberated? yea its sad the father died. But the movie does not want us to be sad, you hear the music? Yea its definetly telling me to cry.

Not even grown folks want to walk in the dark of night, walking through thick fog and low and behold you see a gigantor pile of dead bodies and ashes that are enough to make your jaw drop to the floor.

this ending always takes me down. It is the definition of a man's role. The guy sacrifices himself to save the boy's imagination and try to free the woman from suffering.

@@mrteaparty6090 The father's behaviour is where the comedy was used, even more prominently when the capturing happened and the exaggerated "escape" attempt before this scene. He made his son believe that they were in the game and acted silly, even more so when he spotted his son hiding. Winked at him and did a funny walk. It's been a long time since I watched this movie, so there may be parts I don't completely remember; however, that's pretty much the gist of it all

To elaborate further, at no point does the father resort to violence or threats to do either. Instead he uses his wit and sense of humor to save his child’s innocence and give hope to his wife.

That's not the point of the movie. The point is that a true father will do anything to protect his child from the evil that threatens this world. Clearly from the last couple of subtitles, Joshua understood that when he grew up. "This is my story. This is the sacrifice my father made. This is his gift to me."

I saw this movie in 9th grade. It was an art school and it was Film and Entertainment class, an experimental class. We watched and critiqued classic films throughout history. Out of the 50 or so classics we watched, this one hit me the hardest. I'm 28 now and this is still my favorite film I've ever seen. It's the most beautifully written films I've ever seen. I've never experienced anything like it since. Not even close.

After seeing this movie my respect for parents around the world has increased a lot . The beautiful relationship between parents and children is simply divine . When I see parents being thrown into old age homes it really makes my heart ache for those children don't realise the sacrifices the parents have made for them . I hope I turn out to be a good son and make my parents proud one day and keep them happy always .

When i first saw this film, i was a little girl and i also thought it was a game and didn't know what was happening or why they where there. At the end i thought he won too, but i saw everyone else sad and didn't understand the movie until years later when i grew up and watch it.

this movie really made me tear up, the dad tried everything he could to make his son happy and distracted from the truth in order to protect his son. Truly a great film.
