You know, Otho gets lumped in with the bad emperors quite often, but the way he went out was pretty noble, I think.

He saved quite a few lives and helped pump the brakes on a civil war so you are spot on.

As my Roman history professor always said: “oh look, a noble relatively not corrupt man has taken the throne of Rome, oh… he’s dead now.”

Really feel very bad for Emperor Otho, to be honest. Nero, despite being his friend, forced him to divorce his beloved wife and then he definitely lost her when the Emperor brutally murdered her by kicking her to death, even though she was pregnant, not to mention that Nero also publicly humiliated Otho on several occasions, like when he punched him in the face for calling him Lucius Domitius (the name Nero had before his mother married Claudius). Despite everything he suffered, Otho went on with his life, being even able to become Emperor and humiliate the memory of the deceased Nero. Unfortunately, Destiny wanted the fat degenerate of Vitellius to rebel against him, and in the end, Otho preferred to kill himself instead of sacrificing his men's lives. Despite only being Emperor for two months, Otho proved to be an infinitely more honorable Emperor than Nero. Both the mini-series "A.D." and Anthony Burgess's book "The Kingdom of the Wicked" recount part of Otho's life, if you are interested

I always considered Otho and Titus as the greatest emperors that never had a chance to rule. Do you prefer Otho or Titus?
@TheSPQRHistorian
@TheSPQRHistorian 4 года назад
Yeah, both Titus and Otho lives really makes you think 'what if...' - And I think I prefer Otho tbh, just because if he had played his hand slightly differently the rest of Roman history might look completely different...

@@TheSPQRHistorian That's quite interesting. Otho is kind of a nugget of all of the good things that came out of Nero's reign without any of the more degenerate abuses. I think Otho's major weakness during the year of the Four Emperors was that Italy did not have many troops and at the time he was cut from future help. If he had known that the Flavians were on their way, it may be possible that he could have outlasted Vitellius.

Julius Caesar should have been emperor Rome for a lot longer even though he was considered counsel at the time he was assassinated. It's terrible what they used to do to the emperor's back then. Backstabbing and everything else and poisoning everybody. I don't know enough about Titus and otho

Otho at least put the Empires well-being before his own ego. Well, lets see in the next one did. No nothing about Vitellus other then the wiki entry. Haven't read Gibbon's account.
@TheSPQRHistorian
@TheSPQRHistorian 4 года назад
Yeah, that's what It seems like reading the sources - that Otho committed suicide to prevent the civil-war to carry on. This might be true but one thing I didn't mention in this video is that one of the primary sources of Otho's life is Suetonius. Suetonius father actually fought on Otho's side in the civil-war so, in that context, his account might be biased... :)

I love that you do a full video on each emperor. Most focus on a few good emperors, but mostly on the worst, Caligula and Nero. I think they are the least interesting, they didn’t seriously rule, they were just psychos. (Too much incestuous marriage in the Julio-Claudian dynasty). I get sick of constantly being offered so many videos about them, I want to learn equivalent detail about the others, too. I’m going to enjoy all the videos in this series.

No. Nope and I call BS. He backstabbed Galba after he was not adopted and named successor. I believe Ortho should have fought until the death- the Roman way! Instead of leaving posterity with a well worded prose, suggesting we believe he backed down to prevent further blood shed😒
