I've been looking for years for a channel like this. How many times I searched "freshwater biology" "freshwater ecosystems" "freshwater biology documentary" etc.... and never found this channel until now. Crazy. Thanks so much for making these I couldnt be happier to watch them

Dave…you just made my day. I have a passionate interest in microscopic life forms and the life and death struggles they experience just beyond our perception. Nature has so much more going on than we can see, and life finds a way. Thank you so much for focusing on these fascinating tiny creatures so we can see how they go about the business of life. One wonders just how far the chain extends, getting smaller and smaller, yet still eating, mating, and being eaten. Entire worlds just out of sight. I once saw a kind of flea or louse living on a mosquito…and it made me wonder. There were hunters and hunted, and small beings mating in the moisture on a decaying leaf. Turning the compost has never been the same after that.🖤🇨🇦

I was excited to find some larger seed shrimp that came in on plants I bought from someone's aquarium. Seed shrimp I have had were always light colored and small, but these new ones are longer, larger and darker. I'm expanding their colony in a large jar of greenwater with added java moss and mulberry leaf crumbles and excited to get to add them to some of my aquariums. Amazed to learn some would make it safely through a fish's digestive tract! I'm on a "The Dave" watching spree today:)

I've just found your channel by way of the amano shrimp video. What a treasure trove! I am a freshwater ecologist by trade and aquarist by hobby. I appreciate the level of detail which means that I learn a few things, but it can be enjoyed by anyone with an interest and no background on the subject. That is so often not the case with TV shows which are invariably dumbed down. Great narration, content and of course photography. You have a new fan and subscriber!

Nice video. But I have this problem with seed shrimp in my shrimp tank. There are so many of them, even when I try to siphon their numbers don't seem to decrease. My shrimps aren't thriving and no baby shrimp seems to grow. I think the seed shrimps eat baby shrimps when they molt. Is that possible?
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 2 года назад
When it comes to mother nature, anything is possible. The seed shrimp are obviously very happy, and they might be eating the same food that the shrimp need. Cleaning the substrate should help reduce their numbers. Feed the shrimp in a feeding dish to help keep the food in one location. The idea is to get more food for the shrimp, and hopefully less food for the seed shrimp.

Always wanted a hydra in my aquarium, they never came. I did have Damselfly larvae, and knowing they are not as dangerous as dragon larvae I decided to leave them be. My shrimp population did not change a bit, they had plenty of moss to hide in. Platys still bred like mad. THe Damsel larvae were very pale, so I suspect they were eating planaria and other insects. I never saw them after they grew older so I wonder if the fish got them in the end! Great video and I am now tempted to start my aquarium up again!

I can't seem to grow plants. They always get a film growing on them. Any suggestion? Something that will keep them clean? Water parameters are all in the good range. I have goods lights, sponge filters, light bio load and I dose API plant food once a month.
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 7 месяцев назад
It's probably an imbalance of some kind. Is the film on the plants a type of algae? ( black / brown / fuzzy) Or is it like the brown stuff that can grow on the glass as well as the plants (Diatoms) ? Amano shrimp can be very helpful keeping the plants free of algae. The brown diatom growth can be solved by increasing the water movement.
