The Michael Shermer Show # 422
When Robert Zubrin published his classic book The Case for Mars a quarter century ago, setting foot on the Red Planet seemed a fantasy. Today, manned exploration is certain, and as Zubrin affirms in The New World on Mars, so too is colonization. From the astronautical engineer venerated by NASA and today’s space entrepreneurs, here is what we will achieve on Mars and how.
Shermer and Zubrin discuss: why not start with the moon? • what it is like on Mars • whether Mars was ever like Earth • how much it will cost to go to Mars • how to get people to Mars • resources on Mars • colonization of Mars • public vs. private enterprise for space exploration • economics, politics, and government on Mars • lessons from the Red Planet for the Blue Planet • liberty in space.
Robert Zubrin is former president of Pioneer Astronautics, which performs advanced space research for NASA, the US Air Force, the US Department of Energy, and private companies. He is the founder and president of the Mars Society, leading the Society’s successful effort to build the first simulated human Mars exploration base in the Canadian Arctic.

Think of all the people who were inspired to do great things by the Apollo program, people who went on to become scientists, inventors, discoverers of medical miracles, people who invented technologies to address the climate crisis, etc. By sending humans to Mars, you show that great things are possible, that there's a vision for the future. Life is to be lived, the universe is to be explored. Thank you Robert for your vision, and thank you Michael for bringing someone on with a positive vision for the future.

Nobody says 200 people, 100 max, but likely less. It also depends if ultimately they going to use artificial gravity (by hooking two Starships together by a tether and rotating them) or not. If there’s no gravity, there’s more available space on the ship for people.

It's fascinating to ponder the future of space exploration with Zubrin's insights. Exploring Mars holds incredible potential for humanity's progress and understanding. Sending humans to Mars is an inspiration akin to the Apollo program, sparking innovation and a vision for the future. Thank you, Robert, for your vision, and Michael for sharing it.

8:17 Mr Zubrin "disagrees a lot with Mr Musk's politics". Aha. Comments about W. von Braun. No. I'm not insinuating anything. Just pointing out what a Pandora's Box it is, to preemptive wave the white flag of politics; when nobody asked about it... I might add, that I disagree (a lot) with Mr Zubrin's: politics, fashion sense, diet, the way he arranges his books, and his haircut. Besides that, I really enjoy listening to Robert talking about our journey into a future in space. Thx for coming to my TED talk.

There's zero chance that a small colony, or even a big colony on Mars is gonna crack fusion before it's done on earth: they may adopt it and use it in different ways, as the early Americans did with the steam engine, but they're not going develop it; they'll be working hard enough just staying alive out there.

The absence of a planetary magnetic shield to protect from the cosmic radiation is a major hurdle. Very dangerous to be on the surface for a long time. Most of the time indoors or underground.
@GalenMatson
@GalenMatson Месяц назад
It's solvable. Some of the super greenhouse gases, like CFCs, are excellent radiation absorbers as well. A magnetosail stationed at Mars L1 can deflect the solar wind around the planet. Though it would require futuristic power levels, it is not impossible. Regardless, just thickening the atmosphere will mitigate most of the cosmic radiation, just like on Earth.
@NunoPereira.
@NunoPereira. Месяц назад
Great. Nevertheless in the first decades/centuries to live there will be very hard; until the planetary engineering could thicken the atmosphere.
@dannydetonator
@dannydetonator Месяц назад
@GalenMatson True, at least partly. And if you can stay underground, you could theoretically stay a lifetime without additional technology and getting radiation sickness. However local radiation (a, b and ý) deflectors already exist, they're just too heavy and power-consuming, or uni-polar and meant for relativistic travel speeds. To stop energetic cosmic rays you need MW range of power, but there are exceptions and on surface of Mars it's theoretically possible to locally avoid 50-70% of radiation on surface. Just getting it all there will cost so much more than the crazy $2M round trip costs quoted here. But if there is a will, there is a way.

Our species' median IQ falls into the 80's, and IQ apparently been declining since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution for the reasons Edward Dutton discusses on his RU-vid channel. When you have billions of people on this planet who are probably too dumb even for jobs in stoop labor, you simply don't have enough smart kids in the works who could build a technologically competent global civilization, like the imaginary ones in science fiction, which could tackle challenges like colonizing Mars.

How do you repopulate on Mars when the human body has evolved over billions of years with three times the amount of gravity that we would experience on Mars? How would that affect embryonic development? Is it even possible to grow a fetus on Mars?

I was once an enthusiastic supporter of such ideas as colonizing the Moon and Mars, etc. Until I had a better grasp of the history of the human species. Then I realized: No. If we cannot conduct ourselves here, on Earth, much better, then how will we suddenly, miraculously, by going to Mars, be different (and better) than we are? Our technology is advancing with amazing rapidity, but WE are not. Snuff ourselves out here and leave the other planets alone. Like a poster I remember seeing once said: EARTH FIRST! We'll screw up the other planets later. That sure seems to be the trajectory humans have, and are going on.
@dannydetonator
@dannydetonator Месяц назад
Completely agree. We shouldn't colonise, much less pollute other planets. However, we should, resources allowing explore them. Even exploit, ex.g. asteroids, if it doesn't just benefit further inequality on Earth. If it benefits at least a sizeable part of humanity (all new technology coming from space exploration eventually does - if used right), or at least doesn't harm it, we should not stop exploring outside Earth horizons. But a colony on Mars, don't worry. Not happening in our lifetime, Musk is neither that rich (neither is NASA, China;or Russia), nor smart. Only if we stop the global hybrid-war and fully cooperate in everything, this idea has a shot. Yeah, right..

The FIRST thing you have to have in place is a money that CANNOT be inflated. Bitcoin for Mars. The ability for a government to make money through the magic intervention from a central bank is THE most central cause for an ever expanding government body. So again: Something like bitcoin for Mars is a must.

Did you mean abiogenesis hypothese or biofuels? The former is not exactly Swedish idea, that started from 16th century and hasn't been proved since. Soviet scientists tried and failed, Swedish Royal institute also only speculated. Current hydrocarbons certainly have biological origins, even if mantle-based ones are not excluded. We just don't have any evidence they exist in significant amounts.
