I love this project! I'm not taking part in it because I'm still re-teaching myself to love and make time for reading, and I think joining a bookclub would be a bit too much pressure for now. But I will be applauding from here! Well done everyone! Read on! And Rosianna, your videos always make me feel seen, inspired and comforted. Lots of love ❤️

It's such a comfort! & yes I realised recently that every time I mentioned Life's Library on insta there were lots of people who were hearing about it for the first time or only had a vague sense of what it was so def was time to make a video.

Rosianna, I've loved all of the books we read this year for Life's Library, but I've noticed that I particularly love your choices- if you did a book recommendation list as a p4a perk or something, that would be cool!
@rosianna
@rosianna 4 года назад
Thanks Jamie! That's lovely to hear. I was trying to work out what p4a perk I could offer because most of my recommendations are books I've talked about on here. I'll keep thinking about it though as your interest in a book list is definitely encouraging.

I've been interested in Life's Library since you first announced it, but I didn't sign up last year. I was having a bit of a tough time in term's of reading and other things, and I wasn't sure if I could participate as fully as I'd like to if I joined. This year, however, I just took the plunge and signed up for next year. Recently, I've been focusing on reading more because it's something I truly love and was missing. Like you mentioned in your video, I also miss reading along with a group like I did in college, and I think this will be an excellent way to keep myself motivated to keep reading and remind me of why I love it so much. I'm looking forward to it.
@rosianna

Haley I felt similarly before starting this year. Just wanted to say that the Discord is such a great community, and most of the people on my shelf (myself included) have either not finished a book or not even started one (or more than one!). And for us, that’s ok! The community is still so nice and welcoming. And there’s no pressure to participate. It’s there for however engaged you want to be. :) Also, there’s an archive for discussing previous books, so going back to a previous book in always an option too, when life gets in the way for awhile. Best wishes and DFTBA!

I was fortunate enough to be able to buy a physical subscription for most of the year and if you are reading this and thinking whether to do it or not, I 100% recommend it. I wasn’t very involved in the community because it took me a while to finish each book because of life getting in the way, but I was so excited to receive it in the mail and see all the different perks. I would also browse through other people’s messages on discord and see what they thought. I had to cancel my subscription because I was low on money after summer, but I’m thinking of getting an audiobook one for next year 🙂 My favorite book was “A field guide to getting lost”. Congratulations on a successful year of Life’s Library 🥳

I'm a community manager in Life's Library and its been such a wonderful journey this year. I have only completely finished about half of the books this year due to Life™ but even the ones I didn't finish are all books that I see tremendous value in because of the discussions we've had around each book, particularly in the Q&A's, so I'm really happy to have all of them in my personal library now and to always be able to associate these books with such a wonderful, engaged community.

Life’s library has been so fantastic. I suffered from major burnout this year at work and the classes I need to take for it, so I only ended up reading a few at the time they were out. But the ones that I could read along side and discuss with the group were fantastic. It’s been so nice easing back into my love of reading and simply reading for the sale of it. Not for my thesis or my new work courses.
@rosianna

I've been a part of Life's Library from the start and adore it, although I haven't read all of the books because I somehow forget they are coming to me until they arrive, and then I forget to work them into my reading plans. Considering I read 200+ books a year, you'd think it would be easy to work them in, but I am looking forward to catching up on them and making a bigger effort to read the upcoming books along side the community in the future.

Life’s Library has been such a joy this year and has introduced me to some new favourites (House of Spirits and The Summer Book, both of which I never would have picked up on my own). I’m also pleased with the range of genres and diversity of topics that you and John chose. So thanks for making this a thing! I feel like the Aloe shelf is finally getting our footing in terms of community and it’s so nice.

Ah I'm so so so happy to hear you loved The House of the Spirits and The Summer Book and that you've been happy with the range overall. I'll admit sometimes I feel a bit nervous right before the books go out in case everyone vehemently dislikes them and wants to throw them out the window and ask us why on earth we picked them. But only a bit nervous :) Love to hear that about Aloe, too - I really enjoy stopping by the shelf when I can.

Yes to the point about reading not being about ticking something off on a chart. Love the book club I'm a part of as well as online book community in general because you get to hear folks' perspectives and how one book can mean and bring up completely different themes for someone. Glad that Life's Library has become a wonderful space for folks participating.

Aradion I’ll third Brandi. It’s a diverse community. Religion does come up sometimes as part of the theme of books, and there are a people on my shelf (discussion group) who have identified as Christians. I’d say the community honestly feels left-leaning to me, but even more than issues of religion or politics, everyone has been so humbly welcoming of each other’s various perspectives. It one of the things I love most about Life’s Library :) We learn so much from one another.

It is so awesome to see how well Life's Library is going, you are doing some amazing stuff there by the sounds of it! You can probably guess what I'm going to ask, Life's Cinema when? I guess unfortunately rights issues would make that a nightmare to do unless you wanted to keep it to stuff which is in the public domain but there is such a great selection of cinema that has had the copyright lapse on it. Maybe a better question is are there any issues you have run into with distributing books world wide from a rights issue or is that much simpler than other forms of media? Keep being such an inspiration to us all :)

It's been fun to see people in the discord arrange their own watch-alongs for films related to the books we're reading (directly and indirectly) and I hope that continues in the New Year! But yes, I imagine film club might be a bit more complicated because of rights/platforms. Still, it's a fun idea :) Thanks for the very kind comment and ongoing support!
