Life S5 | Part 6: Final Measurements 

Interesting you say "enough" tech. I usually have about 2 or 3 minutes of blabbering on each slide and carefully edit them all down to just the most needed information. I figure nobody wants to stare at a measurement for 3 mins and listen to me. Then once it's ready to go I still wonder if it's too much or not enough. I often wonder "should have I mentioned this or that" or "may I should cut out that thing...". Good to hear the balance is there. Thanks.

Impulse Audio You demonstrated measurement and interpretation in a logical and practical way. It was very clear in a short video. My only complaint.......get a turntable. 😉

@@ImpulseAudioSpeakers it's true, every time i come back to this series i pick up some new hint, some new peace of information or simply i get inspired, i hope you come back with some new project (could be any type of speaker) with a lot of technical info and measurements, it's crazy how much one can learn from youtube. I'm waiting for the ceiling speaker project (yes, i read the comments too.)

Mei hey thanks for the comment. Interesting that you don’t know about speakers but you watched this. How did you find these videos?

They came up as recommended. I've been watching a bunch of hi fi related videos recently, audiophiliac, PS audio and some other stuff. I love knowing how things work and how they're made.

PA5cAl1 part of why this tweeter works so low is the application. A pair of 6" woofer towers in my living room would make this tweeter scream for help at even modest levels. Given the 1m listening distance it is comfortable doing what I need. So thats the big difference most likely. The Lpad has a 6.2ohm resistor in parallel which really whacks down the impedance combined with the second order filter which has an inductor to parallel means the Fs peak is dealt with no problem. Had I really pushed it low eith just a simple cap I probably would have required the LCR. Good call though. Hope you got it to work eventually.

Jon Hexom thanks! I have been debating giving out the XO. Its something I havent done for quite a while. Depending on the circumstances I may share it with individuals. Also, I may do one more video talking about the subjective sound, show my desktop area, etc. We'll see. Thanks for following along too!

mikel shanani for $100 I would buy the minidsp umik. It is accurate enough for the average DIYer absolutely. I will try to get around to a video about software options and equipment for DIY speaker building.

Yes and no. I considered the angles and the types of reflections I would get, but it would be an error to try and correct a room or placement problem with the XO design. That always leads to a bad sounding speaker. Our brains decipher a source sound and a reflection/room sound very well. Speaker bad, fix speaker. Room bad, fix room.

A Br sounds like a fun project! I use SoundEasy but don’t recommend it. My biggest recommendation is HolmImpulse. Second is Room EQ Wizard. Give either of those a try and I think you’ll succeed.

Hi Phil. I don’t have a ton of experience with transmission line speakers. I like the concept, just have never felt the cost/benefit ratio made sense, so never built any. I think you’d get better advice from someone else.

Waltkat yes but I’m too lazy to build one! I’ve been meaning to build one for years now, but my old protractor keeps me going.

Shoop I've thought about it, but it's really hard to make it worth it. I'd probably sell kits if I did. So, XO, drivers, baffle, port, etc. But the buyer would have to build the cabinet and apply the baffle. Then finish them how they like. I don't think I'd enjoy doing that enough though. I prefer to just create these things and work with video. If enough people wanted a set of these specifically and I could do a run of say 15-20 cross overs and baffles I could do that. That would be 7-10 people interested.

ady sax it really depends what you’re trying to do. A small driver, 0.5m is ok. Bass response, nearfield. A large speaker, 2m sometimes. The further back you go the more reflections you let in though. So you have to be careful. Pointing the speaker straight up will still have reflections from the ground unless it’s an infinite baffle measurement.

@@ImpulseAudioSpeakers Thank you so much! I have 2 subwoofer horn dy (dynaccord fx20) and 2 satellites fx12 and I want to do a calibration and linearization of frequencies . I will do an outdoor measurement for a real preset without frequencies amplified by the environment.

Илья Основиков why would that be better? A peak in that region would sound a little unnatural.

At 3:55 you have mentioned the lack of energy in that range. And prior to that you showed on simmulation that it could be a suckout in a crossover range above axis. And I've got an impression that the Mr. J's crossover might help in that regard as it has a small hump in that range.

Илья Основиков oh I see. That’s very perceptive of you and yes, because of the lack of energy in the off axis response graphs there is a dip in the overall power response of this speaker. It is actually very common in all speakers. It really comes down to what would sound worse, the dip in power response or a peak in the axial response. With a desktop speaker like this the peak may be the least offensive as the power response will be a major contributor to the overall sound. More than the axial response?? I’m not sure. It would be a close call. Overall we are fairly use to hearing that dip in the power response and because I limited it as much as practical because it’s a desktop speaker (close driver spacing, small woofer, etc.) I do think I made the right choice, but you are completely correct to think a peak would be the better choice. Arnand de Jager do you mean a chamfer on all the edges? Yes that helps a lot. I knew the way I built it would have diffraction, I just wanted the look.

Arnand de Jager yes the way that person has done it will help with diffraction. Nice look too. I did a video about diffraction. There’s several ways of reducing it.

LostArkitekt I’ve been using them in my living room, even cranking them up pretty high, and they’ve performed flawlessly. I would port them if using them in a living room permanently, or use a sub. Otherwise they could probably be used for many other applications.

Unfortunately not. The impedance would be double, so the inductor would have to be double the size for starters. There would be other changes too. This woofer is 4ohm but the final result is not that difficult of a load for amplifiers. I wouldn’t worry about that. Especially since you’re not going to be able to pound on them very hard anyways.

@@ImpulseAudioSpeakers yes, the SB Acoustics and the Vifa drivers can I get. It's the cabinet and crossover design that is the big question how..

dennon carlander well the cabinet is easy if you can do woodworking. It’s a simple box especially if you go sealed. For the XO I discussed several options in Part 4 I believe it was. My final version has not been published but there were several good options I shared and the files were made available for use in Xsim to design a XO the way you want if you would prefer. I have given the XO to one other person with the understanding that they would make a charitable donation.

TL Tester none of them :) I’ve kept that to myself. They were suppose to become a kit for diysoundgroup.com but he hasn’t listed them for some reason. I know he has the wood work cut already so not sure what the hold up is. He can usually price kits cheaper than someone can buy the parts.

CAP Yes Ive used it quite a bit. Very popular and very powerful!

If they were implemented the exact same, it would be tough. Overall they’re easily different enough that I can tell. The BG60 is a bigger tweeter with more range. I would only use the SC90 in a small format speaker like I did.

@@ImpulseAudioSpeakers Thanks for answering. I now have Vifa XT25SC90-04 in stock, I want to stitch them with Scan-Speak D7608 / 920000 at 4.8 kHz - 5kHz. And now the question is: If I sell: Vifa XT25SC90-04 and buy: Vifa XT25TG30-04, vifa xt25bg60-04, Scan-Speak R2604 / 833000, Scan-Speak R2604 / 832000. What do I get? will the schedule be smoother? Will it get any better? What would you do? You have a lot of experience, I do not.

@@ГрубичАлександр it really just depends what your project goals are. A speaker like this is small and isn’t expected to hit high SPL levels. A larger speaker will benefit from the bigger tweeter. Depends what you will want. Mostly how low you want to cross over.

@@Istocemosad111 I use to share them and I would get asked a lot of questions that took up too much time. I then asked for donations to ANY non profit of their choice. Nobody would do it. Not one person. I also wanted people to learn rather than just imitate, so I started the channel. I provide free lessons, free driver files, free opinions of drivers, and lots of examples. I don’t think I’m stingy unless asking people to donate or learn something from my free help is stingy. Now I just have a blanket policy to not do it.
