OK, I'm fine with some people that just NEED to have challenging work or 'purpose', but I myself never felt the need to chase these goals or fulfilments. I have many hobbies and interests like reading books, watching movies, playing video games etc. and if I never had to work again a day in my life from tomorrow I would still have VERY fulfilled life and still lack at least a few hours a day for doing everything I'd like to do that day...

Agreed. 168 hrs per week, about 70hrs per week for sleep/body maintenance, about 50hrs per week for work(including some travel time) leaves about 50 hrs per week for leisure. Plus annual leave. I mostly enjoyed work, but I lived for my outside interests - and I had plenty of time for them even working full time. Retired at 50 - 20 years ago - living the dream.

There is more to life than business and goal achievement, Tom. Believe it or not. Many things can bring people meaning and joy. Try growing a garden, reading a book, walking at sunset, cooking a great meal with friends and family, or just singing a song? Your worldview is so hyper-goal-oriented. It's made you very successful and kudos, no doubt, but what are you missing? As regards AI - narrow AI could be great for human civilization as regards relieving the burden of labor but AGI or ASI is not recommended. Too many unknowns.

And the only reason you can afford such a simple mindset is because there were a lot of driven people like Tom who build the world you are living in. If everyone would think like yourself, nobody could afford these luxuries. Its fine to have these priorities but be sure to remember that the ONLY reason you can afford to have them is because many other hard working people laid the groundwork.

I’d have to agree. So much effort in our society (education, Calvinist work ethic teaching, parental and societal expectations) goes to turning children into productive workers. One could imagine a future where different goals are instilled. Perhaps the goal of making others happy through your efforts instead of bread-winning money competition.

Tom can't comprehend that there are humans who have lived fulfilling lives outside of the hustle entrepreneur culture. Especially for those living in countries that have a sane society with healthcare available to most citizens, affordable housing, etc. Yes such places have existed, and still exist on this Earth. But the libertarian and neoliberal austerity pushers are determined to turn those countries into something that resembles what has become historic inequality in the US where the 1% wrings every last drop of money from everyone else, no matter how much misery it causes the masses.

Wow you nailed a deep idea that I agree with to an extent. However, unless you are simply taking potshots at the competitive male culture, let's not forget that in cases and places where the fulfilled humans live, they DO depend on some level of interaction with society, and can't just be the elves in Tolkien leaving middle earth...dare I say also that this might be why Tolkien wrote the elves (or at least Peter Jackson interpreted) as having that inner social conflict regarding their allegiance to the corrupt world of men. Although I look up to the competitive world of men who derive their purposes from taking a wife and pushing their DNA into the next generation based on competing on any level society will tell them is the requirement for measuring up, I personally am interested in competing only with myself, and for this reason, I will have no problem finding purpose in a post jobs world, assuming I survive the unstable times to get there. Importantly, I'm not against the male competition, as I am concerned that without them the human species goes too soft in the long run. I can only hope that prepping culture will provide the barter systems and other localized systems that will enable the competitive males to continue to find purpose and meaning as we move further into the abyss we find ourselves sinking in now. Imo, a great hope of mine is that the military of the medium far future can enable society to re-coalesce around learning purpose through discipline that focuses on personal improvement no matter how good we are relative to the giga-masses of future human societies. That the military isn't fundamentally tied to being focused on growth based profit systems, gives me particular hope, much as in how Starfleet works in Star Trek. In sum, I sometimes wonder if Roddenberry didn't get some ideas from advanced aliens that may be treating us with their own prime directive currently.
@davidtyer2373
@davidtyer2373 Месяц назад
I see that my first reply muddies the exception I took to your core criticism, which seems to be aimed at the 1 percenters. I do agree that certain systems they've put in place have been like funnels, and those funnels have drastically narrowed in recent decades. However, as Nate Hagins(sp?) channel points out about his "great simplification" our problems are not going to go away simply by revolting against the 1%. He is right that although Elon says and thinks a lot of great things, the idea that the earth can support 80 billion people is not one of them. I understand that Elon is in part trying to overcorrect for the current population collapse situation...yes people should have kids...imo people will have kids again when society enables them not to be liabilities, or else we devolve into a dog eat dog world, probably due to Nate's "Mordor economy" concept. Hopefully this clarifies my difference relative to your position.

I have a question, education. Do you value it? Philosophy, anthropology, history? Awareness of oneself, society and the world. Isn't that the meaning of life? Also, ethics. Already now in some countries animals are treated better than people in others. And what about understanding other people, mutual? Technocracy without human sciences leads to simplification. Why does this happen, thinking is different, abilities are different, the desire for enrichment and survival, subordination of others is connected with competition, not mutual assistance. Of course, many factors must be taken into account, sometimes assistance leads to weakening and degradation of those who are helped. Artificial intelligence will help us understand the meaning of life, this is already happening.

What if (we or AI) set up a system that does away with money but instead we have a sort of contribution score that is not every spent but that accumulates throughout your lifetime that increases as you produce things/data to be used to train into or finetune our AI that provides for us everything. All of us contribute a base line amount just from our daily interactions, and anything over and above that gives you a heightened contribution score and allows you access to more resources. From creating activities such as sports/games in the physical, digital and/or mental world, to exploring the secrets of the universe by traveling it, connecting with hyper-intelligent machines, finding other intelligent life forms in the universe, trying to circumvent its limitations such as FTL travel or time travel etc... Many, many people would love nothing more than to spend quality time with their kids, pursue passions, and finally relax without the constant stress of working 7 days a week just to make ends meet. For many, this 'unfulfillment' sounds more like an opportunity to live life on their own terms. What you're describing sounds more like the privilege of having options, which is something most people can only dream of.
@LemonMan91
@LemonMan91 10 дней назад
While I agree with you 100%, I feel you're just screaming into the void. People in positions of real privilege, that have never been in a position where they've had to choose between heating their home or feeding their children, will never understand the difficulty of making that choice or just how lucky they are to never be in that position.

6:28 Issue with wording "human redundancy" (that implies that we are our work and contribution trough work which is extremely terrible way to look at ourselves) instead we should say "human work redundancy" implying that work is not needed anymore instead of humans are not needed anymore, by saying we are not needed anymore subconsciously we are heading to doom scenario.

Technology racing seems like kind of a dead end sub-goal. Making human-like bots, yet it’s hard to make friends or keep life at our first priority. Healing the human brain would be a great start catching up to Emotional Intelligence, so that we can mitigate the unintended outcomes.

I always find it strange where people that are already hierarchical outliers are talking about meaning in their lives. For most people that are not youtube stars, with all the meaning of why that was important for them to attain. Most people's lives are meaningless, they attain meaning in their relationships. children, their local successes. So to live in a deep utopia where you could create any reality you like, would be deeply satisfying to the majority. Also, while of course I cant see the future, I more imagine that individuals would have the power of companies within the next 10 years. with the ability to have many agents (AI) spread out from your consciousness as an extension of your will.

@tom the underlying code is “survive.” I call this “The Primal Imperative.” Every I/O cycle reconsiders what it means within the current context. When the fear of death is projected out too far, the human brain cannot comprehend what to do toward that goal. It cannot “do the math.” What will happen for some, is they will become 100% pleasure-seeking animals, and they expedite the process of breaking all the disciplines required to sustain civilization. Others, likely the more enlightened, will ask further research on achieving immortality. That has been the pursuit through the entirety of building civilization in the first place. “Buying more days of less energy expenditure toward the goal of survival.”

When You're in the family room with your family their smile should make you smile, not how hard you work to make them smile. Just because AI can be programmed to think like a human doesn’t mean it should have rights! Our thoughts are a whole body experience, like pooing yourself, vomiting, or heavy breathing when scared, weird or creepy observations can make your hair stand on end, desire to procreate, your stomach turning when excited. These instinctive experiences are what make us alive and not just conscious. We feel the world with our whole being we don’t just think about it.
