About 3 months ago the rental market was at its peak. A HDB common room can easily cost 1k per month to rent. For 2.9k with such a great condition, it's actually a good deal. The only downside to me is he seemed to be forking quite quite a lot of money to buy the furniture as it was only partially furnished.

agree in some ways but also some people might be dealing with unhappy or even abusive family situation and want to move out for the sake of their mental health. and some people just want to move out to be independent and to grow as an individual, i don't think there's one concrete definition of "adulting". if staying with family and giving back to parents makes you happy then go for it it, if living away from your family and being independent makes you happy then go for it.

These can be true in some cases. But like others have mentioned it depends on the person's circumstances. Giving back to parents is fine but not a 100% must as it goes both ways. The parents must show responsibility in bringing up the kid, providing good education for the kid to smoothly transition into the working world. Then and only then would it be right for the parents to expect something in return. Not everyone in the world experiences this and we've seen many stories in youtube where the parents irresponsibly have 5-10 kids without even thinking of the costs involved to raise them. In this case the kids might grow to resent them upon reaching adulthood and distance away from them. There are also other stories like abuse, parents divorce, etc. These could be valid reasons on why some are choosing to move out.
