Lift Every Voice and Sing is a song that was originally written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1899 and set to music by his brother, J. Rosamond Johnson in 1900, when it was first performed by a youth choir of 500 school children in celebration of President Lincoln's Birthday on February 12 in Jacksonville, FL. Later the song was adopted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as its official song.
Today, Lift Every Voice and Sing is one of the most cherished songs of the African American Civil Rights Movement and is often referred to as the Black National Anthem.
This mesmerizing performance combines the smooth sounds of the jazz saxophone played by Davey Yarborough with the sensuous vocals of Esther Williams to create a one-of-a-kind rendition that includes moving photographs from the protests in Washington DC following the murder of George Floyd in 2020.
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:
Davey Yarborough is the president and artistic director of The Washington Jazz Arts in The District of Columbia. In 2019, Davey retired from Duke Ellington School of the Arts after 30 years of service as jazz educator. His lifelong commitment to mentoring young musicians was recognized in 2018 when he was inducted into the Downbeat Jazz Educator Hall of Fame.
Esther Williams is a name you’re sure to remember once you’ve seen this sensuous, talented entertainer. Together, in 1998, Esther and her husband Davey Yarborough created the Washington Jazz Arts Institute, a non-profit organization with community programs, dedicated to educating and mentoring young and aspiring musicians, that has had a lasting impact on the state of jazz in Washington DC.

I grew up singing this! It's a huge part of me. We sang this truly important song every single day before classes would start during our morning announcements. The entire student body in every classroom would be standing up giving honor and praise to those who came before us. Although we were taught what this song meant to so many, it wasn't until I was much older that I understood the gravity, the intensity, the strength, the valor, the courage and impactful meaning this song represents. And now in 2021, I stand once again in solidarity with my spiritual brothers and sisters - may God bless every single soul reading this message.

If you are truely a descendant from slaves, i am truely sorry for your ancestors. NOT any of my ancestors have ever owned slaves. There for, i feel no guilt of what went on then. That is in the past. I know if i lived back then, my best friends would have been slaves. I am drawn to the underdogs. I, to this day still, stand up for "anyone" being knocked down! Whether white/colored, rich/poor, good/bad, saved/nonChristian... i dont care. I care for the one who is being beaten apon. I will be your friend, but i will not stay standing by someone who seeks revenge. Nor will i enable them either. I am a true friend. A firm believer in tough love. I have held this close to my heart and have had to do this with my children, best friends, and neighbors. Funny thing is, when they got over the hurt feelings, they ALL can back and THANKED me. You will too, hopefully. I mean for the BEST for EVERYONE! 🙏🙏😇

@@jasminemcinnis3400 we are being played. Divide and conquer. If there is unrest in our great country, we are busy being sidetracked. That is why all of this. This is ONE NATION, UNDER GOD. If you are truely unhappy, then go where you will be happy. If you have no LOVE FOR THIS COUNTRY, then go where you will feel you belong. Why make yourself miserable. There is NOTHING tieing you here. Ppl move ALL THE TIME. It is no big deal nowadays. If you feel you are not part of this country... do something about it. But making your own anthem...? That is not heing part of our great nation. That is just widening the divide which will make the democrats HAPPY. Just saying... your live is as YOU make it. Hope you STAY and JOIN THIS GREAT NATION. We need good ppl to win back OUR RIGHTS! EVERYONES! dont widen the divide. You will NEVER be apart of this nation if you do. Not being mean, just look to see in the future... what harmony will strife bring? NONE...🤔🤔😟😟😞😞

Wow...why don't YOU leave, you thinly veiled White Nationalist? Your hate has no place in today's America. And don't bother with excuses or attempts to rationalize and mitigate what you just said. You need to apologize or get out. You basically told people to "go back to Africa!" How. Dare. You.
