Emergency Plane Landing in Signal Hill!
On April 1, 2019, we received a call to transport a plane that made an emergency landing in Signal Hill. Upon arrival, we were informed that the only way we would be allowed to transport the plane was sideways per the police department. I set the rotator in position to lift the plane, spin it, then set on our Landoll trailer for transportation to the airport while being escorted by multiple law enforcement agencies.
Experts in Assisting with Unique Situations
In order to lift the plane safely and without damaging it, our team put a 16’ endless loop around the strongest point of the plane. This happened to be just behind the wings of the aircraft. From there, our team inspected the loop, making sure it was in the right position.
A 5’8” synthetic super sling with a weight limit of 37,800 pounds was then used to lift the front of the plane from the engine rails simultaneously. Once the plane was off the ground, the team used rim sings for guide ropes to keep the plane from spinning dangerously. We then rotated the plane so it was sideways, and our Landoll driver approached the plane to get ready for transport and we slowly lowered the plane onto our Landoll.
Since the plane was situated sideways as we transported it. We were escorted by the police so that our oversized load didn’t get in the way of traffic on the streets. Once we got the airport, we essentially repeated the process it took to get the plane onto the truck, to get it off of the truck, safely completing our transportation the plane. Whenever you have an emergency, don’t be afraid to call Pepe’s Towing Service. Our team of professionals is ready to handle any of your towing needs. Call us at 323-268-1609.

As a private pilot I was taught emergency landings and to use any suitable area. There is also a saying among pilots: Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. Any landing where the airplane will live to fly another day is a great landing. So that pilot did a great job of landing without any obvious damage. That Piper probably weighed about 3000 lbs. Still that rotator was the right vehicle for the job!

I mean... yeah, kinda. ATC (especially at small airports) know the highways and roads around the airport for this reason. Whatever the emergency, the plane couldn't make it back to the airport. Next best bet is a highway.

As someone with experience lifting downed planes you did a pretty good job. A shipping blanket would have protected the top fuselage skin from any paint damage from the heavy hooks. And, personally, I would secure the aft sling with an additional rope tied to the tail tie down ring . This will prevent damage to the flaps in case the sling slips forward during lift operations. Also, unless the aircraft ran out of fuel, it is advisable to drain the fuel tanks before moving the aircraft. The insurance company owes your crew a free dinner.
@PepesTowingService
@PepesTowingService 5 лет назад
You know your stuff, thanks. We were in a rush and in hindsight, a blanket or tarp would have been nice but our Skookum snatch blocks weigh 40lbs, it was never in any real danger although it may look bad from the video. As for the plane, the reason it landed was because it ran out of fuel so that was not necessary. Dinner would be nice but paying the bill was enough haha

100% depends on the job. Some people use them for EVERY call, even if it's a simple car in wide open space lol. Doing a lift off the side like this I don't use them since we are all in such close proximity. Our trucks are equipped with radios so not needed while driving. For over the hill recoveries or anything extreme we do use them.

Depending on where a truck operates will say if a truck this size can actually tow something. Where I live it would be illegal for me to tow anything other than maybe a smart car behind this truck due to weight. There is a MAX weight limit, and a truck like this is usually just within that limit. Some places have exemptions on the weight limits for tow trucks, some will heavily enforce the weight limit. The combination weight isn’t the issue, the truck would be fine, it’s the axle weights, specifically the rear axle weights that are the problem.

Pepe's Towing Service I run wrecker myself in BC, and have loved doing it. We looked into it ourselves because the heavy wrecker we currently have is a 1987 international with a Holmes 750. The winches were converted to hydraulic operation from mechanical, but whoever did it left the gearing... that truck will pull anything once it plants... if it plants... (we have literally torn up some of the highways with this truck...) Sadly it is at end of life and is ready to be replaced, so we have been looking for another unit but too many just can’t tow anything. We also priced out what we would have to charge for a rotator... it came out to nearly $1000/hr to break even... around here no one would be willing to pay that.

@@sum42guy2k Man that is crazy, luckily for us we are in Los Angeles so there will never be any shortage of wrecks and recoveries. If I may suggest, have you tried looking at a used unit? There are some very decent rotators priced well enough to where you could probably break even faster at a better rate.

"doesn't weigh a lot"... yea, but it probably cost more than the tow truck! (laughingly said). just fyi, cross the straps in an x under the fuselage at the wings and the plane will balance itself (the balance point is just behind the spar on any small plane).

We charge our contracted hourly rates. I'm not sure I can say the exact amount, but it was close to $3k.

Why do people always have to stand in front of the camera which has been specifically set up to record the lift. Just because your a firefighter does not mean you have to stand right in front. Is he on his phone too??? Thanks for this very unusual recovery. Cheers

Nice job by Pepe's! You had a twist in the left-side cable but I don't suppose it was a problem with a light load and a short lift. Was the lady with the backpack the "pilot" who landed on the wrong "runway"?

Good job guys, but why transversely? Worried that the trailer would become airborne with a fore-aft arrangement?
@daveyburgess

Updated: The plane is a Beechcraft Bonanza. length 27'6", wingspan 33'6" so definitely wider than it is long! ... Guessing that the plane's wingspan is greater than the width of the tunnel. As it is, it only cleared the tunnel with a few feet to spare, and arriving the the airport with a few feet of wing missing on each side would not have made for a pretty picture!

@@ronjohnson9507 My information came from the news reports at the time (3 months ago), so that is what I based it on for length and wingspan. Since your comment, I have done some research and found that that aircraft is actually a Piper PA-28-181 Archer II so we were both wrong! To save you the trouble, the tail number is N80853 ..... By the way, you might want to consider using a less troll-like name, people like myself tend to ignore comments from names like that!
