When we go from a lower index of refraction medium into a higher index of refraction medium light will bend towards the normal. When we flip this around the exact opposite happens and the light bends away from the normal. This is why when we go from a higher index of refraction medium into a lower index of refraction medium at certain angles the light can bend away from the normal so much that it can’t actually escape this is where the idea of critical angle and total internal reflection come from.
