@@chikasnotmadjustdisappoint6266 That is okay. He doesn't mind being the villain. 🤣 Although for me the villain is he person who says all bread tastes the same, limes are B-tier citrus, and I prefer light mode.
Discord light mode was decent at one point, it had a nice area seperation, as the chat was white background, but the server and channel selection and the member list was the same color as dark mode. Then discord was like "only a fraction of a percent use light mode, so lets change it", changing the entire thing into a flashbang. That was the day me, the last light mode user, switched to dark mode for discord
@@haiIeyy no I literally can't read white text on black/dark colored background, without my eyes hurting. I even have a color change browser add on for websites with only those dark color schemes.
@@jamesa8851 I thought the pinhole trick works by reducing the amount of light coming into your eyes. Wouldn't dilating your eyes do the exact opposite?
Didn't even know dark mode was a thing for youtube, I definitely saw it alot of times but i didn't pay attention to it, Thank you trash taste for talking about this, Now i will be in the dark. Edit : It's Nov 25 22:41 in the Philippines and after using dark mode for 24 days and looking back at Light mode i can now say , Light mode youtube is f***ing awful.
Yess....thank you Trash Taste.....literally i changed any apps that i used frequently to Dark Mode for one day after i watched these video.....hahahhaha
I used to be the technical lead for a niche blog and I added both a light and a dark mode, the dark mode was a dark grey, somewhere in the #333 range and the text was a light gray somewhere in the #aaa range, accent color orange. it was so much more readable than either a pure black&white dark or light mode, just because the contrast was *lower*
Without dark mode, I don't think I could survive my migraines. I think that I once in a while will use some websites in light mode just bc the dark mode doesn't work very well with the site but those sites are typically darker in background anyway
@Alan Bun and how would I work, or function in every day life? 😆 some migraines are just a constant hum in the background that get aggravated by things, light light vs dark mode, others ae hospital worthy. Unfortunately for me my nerves don't signal to my brain properly and meds are a 50/50... so it is what it is.
@@Lyrabela ah, fair enough. I’ve only had a migraine once and it was a million times worse than a normal headache so I had to just close all curtains and shut my eyes and lie down for several hours. I just assumed that’s what migraines were like but if yours are a lot less severe but happen all the time it makes sense you can’t just shut down forever 😂
@Alan Bun I've had mine since I was three, but some are less severe than others and it's like a built up pain tolerance? Kinda like a functioning alcoholic. 😆
@Jao Bai Dun People think that with a dark theme their phone will last longer, but in practice the difference is not even by half. That's what my msg was about.
"At around 30%-50% brightness, the researchers found that switching from light mode to dark mode only saved between 3% and 9% power on average." from XDA Developers. For AMOLED displays, dark mode all the way. Light mode just hurts my eyes for dark and indoor settings...
@@raphaelatienza 3-9% only matters if you have less than 10% charge left and your phone is about to turn off. In that case it is much more rational to have a charger or to change the battery on your phone. There are many people for whom the dark theme is stressful and irritating to the eyes. This is especially affected by the fact that most sites on the Internet with a white theme. And even if you can include a dark theme, "switching" from a white theme to a dark theme will strain your eyes more than if you kept using the white theme. It's not the white theme that stresses your eyes the most, it's the contrast of white/black and black/white. Many sites with a dark theme still have elements of the white theme (youtube search suggestions on pc, suggestions to sign in to a reddit account, etc.), which strains your eyes more than if you were just using the white theme.
11:14 This is because you need to set youtube itself AND your desktop into dark mode. If one or the other isn't then when loading youtube, it loads first as light then switches. Using the device theme option can also cause this, setting it to dark mode again will often also fix it.
For me, light mode or dark mode is more of a preference matter. Certain apps, I still keep it light mode even though my phone is set to dark. On the downside, google just auto-switches to dark mode randomly (which I’m not a fan of).
Hey, I'm a full on light mode users (For Discord I use the grey sidebar and the rest is white). But I always have the lights on in my room and I don't use my phone in bed at all. So I also never get dazzled by the light mode. I tried dark mode and I can't tell you why, but staring on it for too long, generally makes me depressed. I know I am the weird one here but I'm glad there is Garnt fighting for me and other light enjoyers.
I love how I connect with Connor's ability to have a point that sounds good to him and him only that everyone "kind of" understands but completely misses the mark. Is there a name for this cuz I have similarities to this and it gets tiring needing to re-explain all the time
I feel like reading in dark mode hurts my eyes more than reading in light mode. It’s like the white letters feel so much brighter when the rest of the screen is black.
I am going to challenge myself to use dark mode for a week to see what it's like. I think the reason why I use light mode is because I have had poor eyesight since the 1st grade. White text on a black background hurts my eyes funnily enough. But I've been using dark mode on RU-vid a lot and I like it. I don't have a preference for light or dark mode. My eyes hurt no matter which mode I use but I have a medical issue 🤣
@@JeskidoYT Well I always used an iPhone, or iPad and Apple products usually have auto mode, but on my Windows PC I use dark mode because it doesn’t have auto, and I use it mostly in the evening
I've been using dark mode for about 5 years now, and only right now I switched to light mode again. And everything feels new, it's like I have a new device lol.
Back in middle school, on Microsoft Word, I would invert the colors for the background and the text on my essays so the essay would look like pages straight out of a Death Note. I would submit dark mode essays.
Hi, Graphic Designer here, the manga/book reading vs screen reading that Garnt mentioned was a horrible comparison, when you hold a piece of paper, doesn't matter how white the paper is, it's not even close to the amount of light you phone, TV and tablet shoot to your eyes. Dark mode it's better for your eyes cause the color black works as a way to balance white light rays (you can even see this in car windows with the black stuff in the borders), but must importantly *lower your DAMN screen brightness,* search any tutorial on YT for any screen, the general brightness levels are most of the reason of *"Why any screen can fuck your eyes over?"*
About the manga argument, you’d be surprised by how much gray and black there really is on it. Of course it depends on each manga series, but the gray and black really help to not make it too annoying to read on a screen
I love dark mode so much that I'm gonna switch my phone just so I don't have to open the white screen of death known as "Itunes" on a windows machine (I think Macs have a dark mode though) and It's even worse because I don't even use Windows for anything other than launching Itunes and syncing my phone these days.
Why did Garnt’s monologue of being one of the 5% of light-mode users sound like The Watcher’s letter? I think the sociopathic tendencies are confirmed.
I used to use dark mode for everything (RU-vid, Reddit, Discord, code editors, etc), but a few years ago I switched over to light mode (with the exception of Discord). I agree with Garnt, it's more relaxing for my eyes since it's similar to reading a book. The only exception is using your phone at night, but I don't read stuff at night anyway, and if I am, I turn on the lights.
I have been motivated to try and step back into the light. still gonna use dark mode on mobile for the longer battery life on OLED screens. but for everywhere else, I'm gonna give it a fair shake. and so far I never realized how quickly I would sacrifice text readability for the dark mode ascetic. trying to focus in on bright white text in a sea of black was way more straining than i ever realized.
It's like Joey and Connor said, once I tried dark mode once I never went back and I put dark mode on EVERYTHING. It's just easier on the eyes. Idk why anyone WANTS to blind themselves.
I used to use the automatic "light mode during the day/dark mode at night" setting, but I realized I'm fine with using dark mode in the day time, but I'm not fine with using light mode at night.
I tend to just use default mode. But I tend to prefer light mode bc it’s harder for me to read in dark mode. When I use light mode, I just keep the brightness really down. But dark mode, I have to turn it really up to read - but even then it’s still harder I did read that ppl with astigmatism might struggle reading in dark mode bc of halation which makes the letters look more fuzzy. And I have severe astigmatism. I also agree that the dark mode does seem to affect my mood. Like dampers it or something. But ironically i don’t like sunlight.
Dark Reader extension is my best friend when it comes to looking at websites on my computer. F.lux also helps with eye strain if you're forced to look at something in lightmode.
One good argument for light mode is that it helps with astigmatism - when your eyes are more out of focus e.g. horizontally than vertically. I still use dark mode, but it really makes it harder to read text.
Never thought of it in such a complex "this vs that" way 😂 I use dark mode for a few weeks, then I get bored and switch to light mode, and it feels new & refreshing. Then I switch to dark mode again after a few weeks, and it feels refreshing again 😂 Been switching for years now 💀
I agree with Garnt, the adaptive light and dark mode setting is the best option. I do wonder though because I also have ADHD so is this a neurodivergent thing?
I prefer Light mode because its what i was used to like decades ago before being able to switch to dark mode with ease became a thing. I find that my eyes hurt more when im focusing at small, white text on a sea of a dark/black background. people did not complain about it back then, but now dark mode is being introduced now all of a sudden, gremlins who cant keep their hands off their phones while on the bed and keeping the lights on while using their PC's are dominating the entire discussion and hails Dark mode like its the second coming of christ, when in fact its not about the UI, but their shitty lifestyle is what makes them prefer Dark mode.
Fun bit of science trivia! Joey is actually *completely wrong* about light being the reason Garnt has poor eyesight. Relatively recent studies have shown that as we grow up, our eyes are naturally changing shape. There is some sort of receptor in your eyes activated by light that helps them continue to grow in the proper spherical way. If you are not getting enough light in your youth, your eyeballs will grow to be slightly more ovular than spherical. Which means that when light travels to the retina, it has to travel further, making your vision blurrier. So this actually most likely means Garnt did not get a lot of light as a kid
I used to get horrible migraines so dark mode was the only phone light i could handle. So dark mode is the best option for me. My eyes definitely hurt less
