It's impossible to make something everyone wants. Having the LP2 and LP3 is a fair path. I have a 2 and plan to buy a 3 as well and rotate between them. I have a 1 yr old son now and am happy about the camera. Great job guys, thank you for listening to your users.
I'm not a marketing guy, but maybe they could avoid the feeling of the III being better than the II by removing the numerals and giving these devices different names-something that differentiates them without implying a predecessor and successor relationship.
I think Light having different devices at different levels of being disconnected is what is needed for sure. I like that LPIII has more features and LP2 has less. So you can choose your own adventure kind of haha. Either way these are way better than smartphones.
Wow replaceable usb-c charge port! Another example of how thoughtful this company is. Made for humans who don’t want to live a sci-fi lifestyle. Definitely buying one!!! And LYFT rideshare?! Killer
Exactly, i contacted them but they currently have no progress on this. If these 2 where on them i would buy in An instant... Also Europe warehouse would be great... Because the price nearly doubles because of customs and taxes
I like how Jose didn't interrupt while they were explaining the intricate details of the product. Most interviewers have a nag of unnecessarily interrupting and spoiling the flow of the speaker.
Really excited about the camera function in this. I saw somewhere that Joe had a Blackmagic camera so I know these guys are going to really dial the camera in on LP3. The fact that it's got an actual shutter button is amazing
Cheers, we do love cameras - our Light III commercial was shot on a SonyA7SIII, our Light Phone II videos were all using the Digital Bolex (a fellow crowdfunded project) and we did use the og blackmagic pocket for all of our original Light Phone videos.
The only thing I really need is to be able to have my bank app on my phone. That what keeps me from switching to a dumb phone. I'm a truck driver so unpacking my laptop just to check or move money is to inconvenient
I believe 2FA/MFA is pretty important feature for anyone to move to light phone, this is one reason that a lot of folks might still need to carry around a secondary device to just login into platforms on their computers that use MFA/2FA. I hope the light team prioritizes this.
A black and white OLED display is BRILLIANT. I'm surprised it's taken well over a decade for a phone manufacturer to consider utilizing that technology. Could be related to the push for more color, more resolution, etc. but I recognized it as a huge benefit on smaller devices that offered one. Looking forward to the Light Phone III.
I feel sad they leave the E-Ink, it does not feel right.. E-Ink is coming out with new developments and even color on more and more readers and even screens for video now... E-Ink gives a unique atmosphere to write on and read from that Oled cannot... If the camera is a unique and high-end camera, then is a different situation to have an OLED.. but how good is the camera really compared to buying a camera to use for street photography?!
@@JardindeDieu I think the Asian guy is nice but he is 100% the business guy who drives the Lightphone to now become just a new trend product for maximum sales and not for the goals they first set out to support the End-User with mental health support and be free of the stress screens give us in themselves, social media or not on them!
The difficult part for me is simply the price, even with the preorder since im broke 😂, I love the form factor, software, and the freaking rotary encoder!! But I wouldn’t even mind preordering it’s just I want to also see where things go. I already love this phone too much but I just wonder if I’ll ever be able to buy it 😅.
they should really cut to the chase and enable app side loading. there's no way they can integrate the many essential utility apps that people use. they should just let it up to the user to decide what they want on their phone. personally there is a lot of work related apps that i can not work without, and that's just how life is. having two phones is not proper. also wasn't this 399 or am i imagining things? now it's 499
I really like the look of the phone, and like the concept. The only issue I have with it is not having email and WhatsApp. I need email for work, and when I travel WhatsApp is my go to messenger. Can we get those as options?
Great video! Pre-ordered today! Will be my first Light Phone. So excited, I've been 5 years with a smartphone and I've been too productive on it to the point of overwhelm. I really appreciate how sincere the creators of this LP are. One of the many reasons I chose this phone over others.
My biggest thing is I do not want access to the hotspot. Having unlimited unrestricted access to the internet is the exact opposite reason that I want a light phone. I know you can hit a switch to turn the hotspot on and off but I don't want that temptation. I want to be able to disable the hotspot all together and have it be extremely difficult to re enable.
@@JoseBriones That's what I've done for the last several years with my light phone 2. It sucks though to miss out on literally everything else because light phone has an unrestricted hotspot that lets you completely bypass everything your trying to avoid. I have a modem that throttles and blocks a lot at home. With the hotspot I can bypass all of that in an instant and I'm distracted as ever in the never ending void of the internet. Which I thought was the exact opposite of what light phone was about? I pre ordered the light phone 3 because they will apparently have a good fix for this, if not I will sell the phone and stick with the light phone 2. Sure would be a shame though because i really want a light phone 3.
is this screen right? But they got two models.. is it this 60 hz screen you will use for the LP3? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4eqsj3X4RaE.html or the mobile display (5.7~6.7 inch) can reach 120 Hz ? 3.92 inch AMOLED PCAP 1080 X 1240 MIPI Thanks!
I’m excited for all the potential tools they can bring with the new hardware I love the way they’re implementing the turn dial and camera. I hope they can bring some sort of health tools someday! I bought two apps for Calorie and Weight lifting tracking. I use them to keep track of sugar, sodium and macros and my exercise weights sets and reps and work out volume/intensity. I’m on the fence, I really want to buy the LPIII but I’m not sure I can make it work long term atm because of apps I need for health tracking, and my job. Using an Apple Watch, leaving my iPhone 12 mini at home, and using a LPIII primarily seems too complicated and I need to lean off of the Apple ecosystem more. Right now I think upgrading my GPS Apple Watch SE to a LTE model will work better long term to disconnect for me right now. I love the company’s mission and that they’re willing to support devices 5+ years and have different tiers for being disconnected. I think it would be really cool if Light made another model down the road as a standalone smartwatch/phone. The size screen really helps me be more present, and keep my hands/pockets free when running, kayaking, or weight lifting and not worry about it falling out of my pocket.
I will for sure preorder. I won't get rid of my iPhone but what I plan on doing is to keep my iPhone for banking (that's where I have my 2-factor authentication software).
It would be nice if Light Phone could cut a deal with a carrier so that the carrier would also offer and sell the Light Phone offering financing plans etc. - US Mobile would be a great choice
If you want a smartphone, get a smartphone. Why try and turn a “dumb” phone into a smartphone? Defeats the purpose. Calls, text, clock, alarms, timer, calculator and long battery life are all the basics I need. All in my opinion, anyway. I do like e-ink for a display.
The hardware and aesthetics are top notch, but I wonder if people just want the looks and are not particularly interested in the light software and would be better served just installing android and users modifying it for their own needs
You know a feature I miss? The IR blaster from my Note 3. Using your phone as a tv remote was EPIC. Really thinking about getting one of these. But, I'm concerned that the GPS won't be reliable enough for a trucker.
Considering how expensive the phone is, and that it's a minimalist device, I find it odd that they decided to include a finger print sensor and NFC instead of just reducing cost by omitting those things. I'm not suggesting this would make the phone cheap, but it would make it less expensive. Finger print sensors make practical sense on smartphones because they're frequent use items, with people glued to their devices. In my opinion, if you're considering adding a finger print sensor, it may be a smell that you're at odds with the concept of digital detox. I am somewhat biased and don't use finger print sensors. But on that, I do wonder how many Light Phone users were yearning for the Finger Print sensor and / or NFC? I would guess, and perhaps I'm wrong, that most Light Phone users would have preferred a headphone jack instead of both the Finger Print sensor and NFC.
The future of security (2FA) likely will require biometrics, so this will account for that. Pins and passwords won’t be stable for much longer with computing power step changes. Seems thoughtful to include imo
Agree 100 percent. Digital detox doesn’t include tap to pay and biometrics. Basic is better in my opinion. I’m ok with the new display and added camera, I just hope they don’t move too far toward mainstream tech or at least give us the ability to disable them completely.
Great interview. Just my two cents. I really hope they put a lot of thought into the camera tool. I think it is a very cool improvement, but I also think it could work against itself and take away from the “digital detox” people love about the Light Phone II. I would like to see two different functions. 1. The ability to send a picture directly through a message. Meaning directly through the message tool itself. Go to a thread, select camera icon, take photo, send photo. 2. If taking general memory photos with the device, only be able to review them through the dashboard or email at a later time.
This seems pretty nifty, and a potential replacement to my current Palm PVG100 someday... As others have said, 2FA is a requirement for my work, so I hope they implement that. (Honestly, I'm not interested in Spotify since I use mp3s, and not in Lyft, since I cycle use public transit) One nice-to-have is a step counter, to allow folks to break free of their activity trackers and smartwatches, but since they didn't mention it, I'd guess that's not in the cards. As opposed to social media stuff, step counting is one really cool beneficial thing phones have brought to the table. The lack of a wrist strap attachment is also a miss, in my opinion, but not the worst in the world.
The button/wheel could have multiple uses. click once to activate volume control, click twice to activate brightness and something else when it hasn't been pressed/clicked.
I just bought the Light Phone II this year and so I won't be switching anytime soon, but I'm glad they are coming out with this new option. I also have found that I'm more present when I don't have a camera on my phone, but there are also times it would be helpful. I did buy a digital camera, I just am not good at using it haha. I can't get it to focus lol, probably user error. Love the new directory tool. Glad they are not planning on replacing the light phone II, I think that's still the best option for me.
I feel for the photos, they should make so you can only view them if you have it connected to a laptop or other device if you intend to have them printed, as the other darkside of tech is only ever having memories digitized. Lets print our photos like we used to!!
In Barcelona (Catalonia) we have a lot of restaurants that only have the menu in QR and my iPhone 6 can’t read them, so I have to rely on my wife’s phone.
Today preorder light phone 3...I am early waiting for getting this device...payment app mostly using in India...please develop payment app for light phone 3
I preordered one, but I wonder if they will also sell screen protectors or phone cases! I will refuse to use the phone until they come out with them! As I drop my phone quite often. Right now I use a leather phone case wallet from Hand and Hide on etsy! Omg its saved my phone and protected it so much! Plus I use it as a wallet. I just hope Hand and Hide can make some too! I like their leather phone cases! I use mine as a mini purse 😅
It's just my opinion but, it feels like the actual problem of modern "smartphone" is that it has App Store and 3rd party developers/companies want their profits from it. So if Light Phone is support basic functions with distraction free manor, which means it does have Camera and music player but none of those SNS or those apps that consistently trying to remind me they're there, it looks nice. I'm South Korean so I can't buy it I guess but...idk, hope I can have a chance to get it one day.
LPII user here. Can we get some footage of keyboard use / responsiveness? I like my LPII but I find myself avoiding texting back to a problematic degree because of how horrible the response time of the e-ink screen. Interferencewith communication experience is a big problem for a communication device. Im optimistic from the side-swiping footage, but Id like to see texting/typing. Voice to text is ok, but it is no substitute for my personal needs, and misses my intonation, injects bad punctuation, etc. In short, its sometimes useful, but not a sufficient replacement for good text input. Thanks,
I really want a III but I can't afford to pay $400 now for a phone in January. I'll probably wait until my current phone breaks and then get a II or III depending on when.
Market opportunity imo. we need more suppliers to support Light with accessories. Making phones is hard enough. I’d take better software and reliability over them spending limited resources on a brown case… (start an online shop and create one)
I love everything about this phone but without Whatsapp it would be irresponsible to switch for me. Without the group chats i would miss basically every friends and family get togethers.
same here with WhatsApp, but I'm still gonna buy and try to use it as my main phone. I'm still gonna keep my iPhone for WhatsApp and my plan is to check it like once a week/check WhatsApp web when I'm on the computer. So I'll still be able to read potential family/friends group chats, just not instantly.
Thank you Jose, Joe and Kai for your time to make this livestream! I have the Light Phone II and it was so cool to hear more about the company and how you worked to design the next Light Phone. I am considering the switch just for the camera feature and was super glad to hear that it is being designed with your values with the goal to make it a tool not a distraction 👍
Coming back to ask if there is plans for a giveaway for the Light Phone 3. I thought you mentioned it in a previous video that you might do a giveaway in this live so I'm wondering if I missed it or is there plans for one later?
still contemplating on if LP3 will be my first Lightphone or not. LP2 seems neat, but the slow e-ink display, navigation, and lack of other things seems too much for me. i'd love to see them condense down what the LP3 is to them in a video. hearing the possibilities and stuff here are cool, but i really want to know what makes the LP3 the LP3 and makes it different from the LP2 in a more brief way. i currently use a 902KC for the past year and i love it, but the texting is super bad lol so having a LP of some sort would instantly improve that. cant wait to see more followups to this and hopefully a LOT more details before that pre-order deal is up (otherwise I wouldnt buy at $799 tbh).
Yes I think email is important too and I don't really see a difference between an email and a text as far as digital detox is concerned. If this phone had emails, online banking and whatsapp this would be the perfect phone in my opinion.
Yeah I kind of think it's odd because I actively avoid my email on my phone, but sometimes I get an email I'd otherwise miss. It's not like social media where I'm doom scrolling for hours
I would make a health app - women’s health calendar trackers, activity like steps, HRV, etc from a smart device - for Light OS if opened up. Agree, Spotify first.
I hate to be blunt but the idea of customers needing to be “educated” on why $800 for an extremely limited phone is reasonable is icky to me. We understand that you have costs as a business, but so does every business; if you’re selling what’s effectively a nice dumb phone for the same price as a full on iPhone, you’re severely limiting your market to people who have enough money for a second phone, who want to digital detox, and who aren’t willing to buy a regular dumb phone. It’s just not appealing at $800, and I don’t think it’s just sticker shock-it’s common sense from a consumer perspective.
Nowadays many people use the social apps to manage their "phone book". Using data to call, to find people... actually is easier than maintaining a phone book for different platforms or different sim cards. I think that's a simple and low cost to call solution as well.
Idk I don't look at photos for entertainment- and it's often a part of text communication. I only ever open my photos when I'm trying to show someone something, and I'd like to be able to do that
thanks Joe for this video, initially ordered then cancelled but after watching this video i reordered again as i'd really love to support the company and having it more like all black mode and only colour on photos/camera mode is like having an eink to me anyways which was the pushback for me in the past. looking forward to getting my phone next year and i wont even care if it gets delayed and maybe even my birthday gift to myself instead if it gets pushed to feb.
Can't wait, I love everything about this company. I love my Light Phone 2. The only issue I see with this Light Phone 3 is the speaker grill. It will collect dust and dirt and will be incredibly difficult to keep it clean. I had the Razr phone with a similar grill and it ended up looking grubby and impossible to clean.
Cancelled my preorder because I didn't realize you had to sent all your texts and contacts to the phone via their servers. Thats far too much of a privacy violation for me. Really wish they would let you load a contacts file over USB, makes no sense.
@@JoseBriones Is it just a one at a time thing? It would suck to create hundreds of contacts, but thats still better than using a dashboard privacy wise. It's just strange since contact files are fairly standardized. I'm still paying attention to updates so I can potentially change my mind because I love how it looks and the idea of it. Especially if I could develop my own solutions to some things via the SDK.
@@somberrhombus Just to make sure it's clear, there is currently no history (calls/texts) ever shared with the dashboard ever, it's just not possible at all right now. The dashboard is the only mechanism currently for importing batches of contacts or adding optional tools. We're open to alternative methods of side loading but as a small team using the dashboard website was a universal way to support all of our users as with our original Light Phone we had a dedicated desktop app and it was very hard to support every operating system ongoing. The Light Account/dashboard is optional, but you are not able to add tools/import contacts without it currently. We understand that may be a deal breaker - we can certainly refund your pre-order no problem, just email us or reply to your order confirmation. Thanks for watching and considering!
