I set out to compare an older Orion SkyGlow imaging filter (purchased in 2012) to a new IDAS LPS-D3 filter (purchased in 2022). How will the older Light pollution filter stand up to the new one. Both filters are broadband LP filters but the IDAS is advertised for use to combat LED light pollution. Lets image M42 to see if we can determine anything.
Equipment used:

Orion StarShoot G26C

Really great comparison and video. I like how you break down how you compared them. Glad you've got clear skies.

Nice Job Jason and good work on the comparison. Looks to me that the IDAS is a worthy upgrade, not used their filters but know others that have a love them. Clear skies man

Cool video Jason, I somehow missed this one as I enjoy all your videos. I don’t know much about osc lp filters, but I really liked watching your PS processing. I’m awful with PS so it’s cool to see others wiz through it.

Glad to hear Joe. haha, I'm hardly a wiz but I am learning new things the further along I get. I still want to invest in Pix though.

nice job. I have used the IDAS, and really like the results, with my color cam.

Thanks Greg. IDAS did look a bit better.

Thanks for the in-depth comparison and I liked watching your processing process also. Tough call saying which is better. The IDAS seems to offer a better image, and as you pointed out there is more nebulosity visible, so when it's time for me to get further into astrophotography I think that will be my choice.

Nice comparison Jason and I feel your pain in trying to compare these too. I've found it so difficult too especially with the light pollution ones. I have the L-Pro and on some targets especially faint ones, it makes it worse.

Thanks Ollie, thought I'd try something different. Way to many variables that are uncontrollable to get a good comparison, would almost need 2 exact same setups running on the same night.

Interesting comparison. Tough trying to get things equal for all filters but you did a damn good job. I think the IDAS and Skyglow both produced nice detail but on the video it did look like the IDAS did a bit better with dealing with the gradient than the Skyglow.

Yes Logan, trying to keep it as scientific as posible was hard. (so many variables that can not be controlled). But I do totally agree. The IDAS looked to be a bit better with the gradient. but for a 10 year old filter, the Skyglow didn't do too bad. Surfs up & Clear skies!!

Very Good Comparison Jason! I want To get an Optolong L-pro filter Someday for my Setup!

I went with the IDAS because it was advertised as being able to deal with LED light pollution, not sure if it made that much of a difference IMO. Thanks for watching!

Dude, I like the IDAS a tad better man. As you mentioned, you can probably manage to both, but I prefer the IDAS here.

IDAS looks like it has more passes more reds but does look like it does a better job.

Hey Jason! Great effort here to get this as fair as possible mate, well done! :-) I think I like the IDAS best, but it's pretty close between that and the skyglow filter! likely would vary a bit per subject I guess? Insane time-lapse early in the video dude, it looked like daytime but then I noticed the stars behind that thin cloud!! 😀 Super job putting this all together man, clear skies!

Thanks Luke! I would agree with you, but I'm thinking I'll keep the SkyGlow filter too. I did try to find a thinner filter cell but everyone I found was sold out. Hope you are getting some clear skies over on your side of the globe.

@@AZ4Runner hey Mate! - We've had pretty cruddy weather but I've taken every chance I possibly got to get out and shoot, well worth it! RE: the cell thickness issue, if you're feeling brave then there is a remedy, I've done this before myself... either remove or mask the filter glass in the cell (low tack masking tape works well and comes off without residue) place a fresh sheet of 280-ish grit sandpaper down on a flat surface, and slowly and gently sand down the front face of the filter cell until it's thin enough to use, clean everything up properly with water/alcohol etc and paint/marker pen the bright silver sanded face of the ring back to black otherwise it gives reflections 🙂 I had to do this with my Baader UV/IR L filter as it would not go in the drawer either! - not at all ideal, but it worked - I had to sand it down by about 1mm. Clear skies and I don't blame you if you'd rather not go that route haha!!

@lukomatico I just checked again the the I'm ordering a 2 inch SVBony Dark frame filter. It was only 18 US dollars. I'm gonna remove the Dark filter and replace it with the SkyGlow filter. provided the SVBony is less than 6mm thick it should work. If not it was only 18 dollars..
