Light Rock Fishing - Jumbo Mackerel on the Major Craft 5G Aji-Do

I've been editing a video of a pretty hectic fishing day I had recently with my friend Joe, but felt this big mackerel I caught on my new Major Craft Aji-Do deserved a video of its own :) rated to cast 3g max and only 5 foot long, this is the lightest rod I've ever owned but has been an absolute joy to fish with and has so much backbone for such a light rod, as you will see in the video :)

Normally see mackerel being hauled in with broomsticks, this is the way, great sport, and then released too!👍

Yeah I feel its a total disservice to mackerel when they're hauled in on broomsticks 6 at a time! Such a great sporting fish on light gear. I do like to take the odd mackerel for dinner but felt that one deserved to swim on after the performance it put in 🙂🎣

Great sport. Liking the extra camera angles too. As I'm new to LRF, it is good to see how you are working/retrieving the jig - need to try these more and make more time for it!

Thanks mate, its not often I manage to get myself organised enough to put the other camera on, my mate Joe got a bit of extra foiraheon his phone too which was handy 🙂 I'm glad you found it useful to see how I was working that jig, I tend to alternate between that sort of flat, twitchy retrieve and then next cast a more vertical, upward set of twitches followed by pauses to let the jig sink back down, some of my videos show a bit of that too 🙂 Tight lines mate 👍🎣

Nice catch Rich, good too see someone actually treating machine as it deserves hard fighting, great sport on light tackle. No bloody feathers flying about and fish being wrenched in 6 at a time👏👏👏

Thanks mate, it always makes me feel a bit sad seeing them winched in on big rods and sets of feathers. I know some just like to fill the freezer and it's more efficient but it seems like a big injustice to what is a great sporting fish on the right tackle! 👍🎣

@@DevonLerfer Just fyi. I lrf'd the pier at Ilfracombe today. slow to begin with, getting blennies and gobies, but some wrasse showed up in the end. missed quite a few bites and bumped loads off. Got bitten off by something when I had it halfway up. Probably a better sized wrasse. by the feel of it. So they're starting to show now.

Nice fish, years ago when I first used to fish there, that was the average size. Had a 3.5lb fish off there way back in 80's.

Hi I have a question I go fishing in brixham and I like it there I was thinking of buying a spinner lrf rod and woundered what happens if u catch a fish too heavy to lift the rod and seals are abt cos they always are in summer and if u had any tips on how u get it past them

Hi mate, sometimes you will encounter big fish, sometimes you will get snapped off, usually by wrasse that run you into the boulders or rocks, but if you set your drag right and are patient, you can land them, a net is important though. The seals can nick the odd fish but I've only ever had a seal grab 2 in the time I've fished Brixham. Just keep an eye out for them and wait for them to pass through if you can 👍

Hello. This reed, as the name suggests, is aji cane. I was wondering if the rod is difficult or damaged while fishing Mebaru.

Hi there, I've caught lots of fish using mebaru style techniques, it is a very fast actioned rod, so you do miss a few hits, but it has incredible backbone so no chance of being damaged if using suitable line 👍

How is the casting distance compared to longer ajing rod? how far can you cast in this rod(estimate)? Thanks. Nice fish

The short length of the rod does mean it's not quite as easy or natural feeling when casting but I've been really surprised and impressed with how far it will throw a lure. I've been doing quite a bit of river work with it, throwing lures on 0.6g chebs and it pings them about nice too. Cheers 🙂

Hello, I would like to ask your opinion - I'm thinking of getting the same Soare BB reel for my girlfriends M.C. 6'3" Trouttino UL. Rod. For local stocked trout & panfish. Fun fishing, small spoons & jigs ect. Maybe 4 lb. Mono or light braid. Any problems with yours ? Thanks for your opinion. Ray from Oregon, USA

Hey Ray, I've got 2 soare bb reels, which says a lot about my opinion about them! They are really solid, smooth and reliable reels. Great drag and a great retrieve rate for my ultralight fishing. The shallow spool is another bonus too, no backing required! I've had no problems with mine although the first one i bought is now just starting to sound a little rough after 3 years of solid saltwater use, which i think is very impressive seeing as I totally abuse my reels. Hope that hopes mate 🙂

Hi there, I'd not recommend casting over the max weight limit of a rod, you might get away with it but rods do snap quite frequently when slightly overloaded and there's much less room for error
