Some highlights from a decent session down at Swanage with ‪@FishingAroundBudleigh‬ back in late summer/early autumn last year.
We'd picked a day when gale force winds were forecast so weren't overly confident that it would be safe, let alone fishable. but thankfully we were sheltered from the wind and ended up having a really productive session!
As always, thank you for watching!

Hey man what do you recommend I should fish for there? And what bait/lures to use for that fish
@DevonLerfer
@DevonLerfer Месяц назад
@@JamieFowler-xl5vx Hi Jamie, Swanage is a great multi species venue so you can fish for all sorts, various wrasse, blennies, gobies etc close, there are bass, mackerel garfish and bream to be had on the outside plus lots of other stuff. The fun is in trying different stuff to see what works, so stuff like isome will guarantee bites, but it's worth throwing small metals and soft plastics around to see what else you can pick up 👍

How do you work the Carolina rig mate? Couldn’t work it out from the video, are you just jigging it on the bottom?
@DevonLerfer
@DevonLerfer Год назад
The tide was running under the pier so I was sort of just letting it slide under a bit with the current and lifting it off the bottom. The purists might wince but I tend to use the Carolina as a more refined split shot rig, I like the fact you can fish a bit heavier but still have good contact with fish, its great for fishing at range but staying tight on the deck too 👍

Nice video mate! What lenght of landing net would you recomend to fish from this pier please?
@DevonLerfer

Thanks mate, for the top level my 5.9m handle was just about long enough, but even that would be too short at low tide 😅

Great Video Rich. That Carolina rig works well. Do you hold the weight off the bottom when fishing it and do you impart any movement to the lure when fishing it, or just hold it static? Thanks 👍
@DevonLerfer
@DevonLerfer Год назад
Cheers Paul! I really like the Carolina rig. It depends on where I'm using it really, quite often I'll use it to search around clean ground on a slow steady retrieve along the bottom. In this instance, there was a bit of tidal current pulling round the end of the pier so I was just holding against the current, trying to keep it on the bottom with the occasional lift, in my mind, the lure will be constantly moving in some way or another, either from tidal movement or putting movement in myself. I've found bream seem to like a decent bit of movement

Nice, I'd like to try fishing there, it's not far from me. Can you tell me, are those lower stages in reach of a "normal" course net handle rather than your impressive, comedically long one? I wouldn't want to winch in an unexpected two pounder, or drop back a fish from a great height. Thanks guys, from a usually river fishing guy that does a bit of lrf. 😀
@DevonLerfer
@DevonLerfer Год назад
It's a great venue! The outside of the lower deck would be reachable with a standard net through most stages of the tide I'd say. It might be more difficult in the middle section as there is a rail there though. Tight lines 👍🎣

I go to swanage every year and usually go out on a charter trip. I didn't realise the fishing was so good off the pier! I'm a coarse angler so pier/sea fishing is still alien to me. What sort of set ups are you using if you don't mind me asking
@DevonLerfer
@DevonLerfer Год назад
It's one of the best LRF/species marks I've fished mate. I was fishing with 2 LRF setup's, rated 5g and 7g max casting weight. Fishing 5g dropshot, 3.5g Carolina rig or small chebs with small hooks (size 16 mostly). Also used 5 and 7g metals to target the mackerel and garfish. Well worth a go!

@@topfuelteddy there are a huge variety of lures and jigheads available out there, but if you stick to lures under 2" and jigheads between 1 and 3g with small hooks, you'll have a good starting point.
