: ) haha. I've only ever messed with wiring once before so I really didn't expect it to work and was just shocked and thrilled when it did. Thanks Bob!
What an awesome labour of love for your mom. You're a good daughter April :) Loved your reaction when it lit up on the first try!! When I turn my whiskey barrel pens its cool to smell the Jack coming out :) Mark
Give me their names, I will ban them immediately! Lol. It was a lot of holes but to be honest, I didn't mind except for having to rush to get it done. My hands were throbbing so much by the end because I wasn't able to take long enough breaks and give them a rest. I've actually thought about getting another one and doing it again in my free time just to sell. : ) We'll see though.
I've seen whiskey barrels made into chairs and dog houses, but your project was a first for me!... 4,316 holes, you do love your Momma! Nice work April...congrats on your new job!
I'm actually thinking about making a second for my own place. : ) Now that it's done, I don't want to give it away! If you do make one, one thing I would do different is add a lazy susan set up for the light inside to rotate around. That would create a very cool effect I think.
Cute idea, seems like you should've taken the bottom off for the lights instead, but oh well. Live and learn. We're new youtubers (variety of diy, sewing, tractoring, tree cutting, critters, etc). Just wanted to say hi, excited to join the community :-)
Really cool project April! I can't let my parents see this video otherwise I'd be making one from a wine barrel for them :) The patterns look great lit up.
4,316 holes!! Damn, no wonder your hands hurt, lol. It's a good looking barrel light. Gonna have to go to inventables and check out that stencil maker.
Very Cool April Wilkerson you need an apprentice to drill those holes....lol. great work, cool thing is you can change the bulbs to different colors. I was thinking of doing something with LED'S of course it wasn't a whiskey barrel....lol. Your mom is pretty cool to think of using it.
Ooh! Roy Sigurd suggested colored bulbs, which is a great idea. Even better there are LED strip lights available that can display different colors by a little controller, and can even be set to gradually change on their own. This is a project that has TONS of cool possibilities!
Me and Genevieve love it! You could use the left over wood on the lid for another special project :) I know Mark Christopher uses it for turning and LOVES the smell!
This would be a good decoration for your place! Oh, and something Genevieve could help with. You start on one side and her on the other then meet in the middle.
I think it would look cool if you drilled out spots and install colored glass to add color and illumination. I imagine there was a ton of saw dust at the bottom once you opened the lid. If you used LED lights instead of bulbs, it would use less power and you could install them closer to the walls and build a inside chamber for holding things, like umbrellas or brooms or whatever she might have in the room she will have the barrel in.
Fantastic April! If I can offer two suggestions: 1. (altho I haven't read in the comments but I'm sure someone already said...) Use CF bulbs for a multitude of reasons. 2. Since you are only trying to light one half of the barrel at one time, vertically divide it with a board (using your seasonal equator that you made). Paint everything white inside including the board. Make your light stand so you can just pop it over to the season of your choice when the time is right. You'll 3x to 10x your light.
that is some serious drilling! Looks really nice. My favorite parts are between 4:04 and 4:22 and when you recommend to think outside of the barrel. I've tried with electricity a few times and twice it went definitely wrong. Sure your mum is proud of you.
Well worth the wait for this video. How many times you've recharged the batteries of your drill? (haha). Your mother will be very happy with this gift. Thank you for sharing this video.
This really came out nice. I do a lot of work at the local winery making all kinds of stuff out of the barrels, I hope the owner doesn't see this or I will be making a few of these for him. My hands are tired just thinking about it.lol.
A piece of dried curved oak from a dead oak tree which you can find by taking a walk through the backwoods if you live close to a forest or any hiking trails. I like what you've done to that whiskey barrel....A "BIG THUMBS-UP" Again April....
Super ! Tu es une fille géniale. J'adore tes vidéos pleines d'excellentes idées, et tes fabriquations de très bonnes qualité. En plus, tu es très sympathique et jolie fille ; que du bonheur
That's a great project April! You have a lot of patience with all those screw holes. That must have left you with a fairly numb wrist afterwards?! Great finish though :) Was your mum happy with the finished barrel?
:) It was more than my wrist....both of my hands, my forearms, all the way up to my elbows. My neck, shoulders, back. Lol, I think the only things that didn't hurt were my toes. Oh yes, my mom loves it. She hasn't seen it in person yet, I'll take it to her this upcoming month probably.
Do you think you needed all those lights?, As said before, they should be put into a box, in other words the wires should be more protected..... It is outside. (LED's???) As far a the project....GREAT, love the look, love the application, love the hole look, love your films.
Yes I do, I was actually thinking about adding two more that point to the 'sides' of the barrel because those imagines are as bright as the ones on the front/back. The barrel is going on a giant covered porch so even though it's outside, there is no chance of rain getting on it. : ) Thank you, glad you like it.
Bob C A rope light would not be bright enough. This material is a little over an inch thick. Even with as many lights as I put in it, I still think I could use a few more that point in the other two directions, but we'll see.
April Wilkerson Excellent project and results. You have more perseverance than me, it would have ended up as ONE season barrel, if I'd been doing the drilling. My fingers cramp something awful! One question: Did you check the amperage rating on the switch you used? Is it rated for that many bulbs? Your blog didn't say. With 6 fixtures, if you installed 100 watt bulbs, you're looking at around 5 amps. (6 bulbs x 100 watts / 120 volts= 5 amps.) That's a lot of amps for a small switch. If you add more fixtures, more amps. LEDs would use less, of course, because their wattage is less. If the switch isn't rated for that much amperage, it could get very hot & become a fire hazard. So, you might want to use a regular ol' house rocker-type light-switch, which should be rated for 15 amps. Better safe than sorry. Take care. Your videos are great! p.s. Wrap those wire nuts with elect. tape, to keep them from un-twisting.
Super job kiddo. you have taken "tin punch" to a hole new level...Sorry I just had to. All kidding aside I imagine she will love it and I just loved how excited you got when your wiring job worked on the first try. Keep that infectious spirit alive and keep watching your subscribers list grow. Thank you for all you do and the spirit you you keep giving all of us. Mike
Neat idea but could get might hot in there. Also instead of switch maybe add a timer or even better motion sensor or light sensor. Hope ya recover from drilling ugh LOL
I tell you what Mike, I wasn't able to even open a beer at the end of the night, my hands were toast! It wouldn't have been so bad if I didn't have such a tight deadline to get it done. I would have been able to spread it out more and not do so much in one day.
Hey April. What a cool project. Anything with lighting I love. I'm sure ur mom will too. What a loving daughter you are! And - priceless reaction with the switch, btw. Another spectacular job, kiddo. 😉 Troy
Awesome creative idea. regarding the butterflies... did you try reaching inside the barrel and countersinking the back of the holes? I wonder if that would help the light get where it needs to be. OR the other thought was what it would look like with all the lights facing the same way... You don't really want the out-of-season side to be visible do you? Or maybe just for ambience. Never mind, I'm just thinking out loud! ...art
I like that train of thought, and you're right. I could definitley change up the light fixture so that maybe it's more of a V formation instead of a rectangle because I don't need the out of season to be lit up. I could make the fixture rotate so that my folks could turn the barrel then rotate the light to the front. Hmm....I might do that. Good thinking Art.
Thank you. : ) Well maybe, but I have a really awesome mom. She has always given me and my brother everything she could so I don't mind giving her what she wants now.
This is just fantastic =) Never seen something like this, and I want it so bad!!! Its simply stunning =) Great job =) Thanks for sharing =) Loved the summer/winter part =) Ps. RESPECT for making all those holes with that machine! Totally badass!
That's amazing! I saw the video thumbnail yesterday and think "it's a barrel what she's gonna do with it?", but once again you surprise me, that turned out very nice. Keep going April, I'm from Brazil and hope that your channel grow up, just talk more, i noticed that you're a little shy in front of a camera. Sorry any error = D
You have a lot of patience to drill so many holes, I'm not so sure there would be a whiskey barrel left if I had to drill that many holes. I have to say the project came out really nice and I know your parents really appreciated it when you gave it to them. Love your videos ... keep them coming!
