I've tried this method and it worked quite well, even with my underpowered 2.5 watt laser. I'm not sure what chemical reaction is occurring but it does leave a semi-permanent image on the tile. On a whim, I put the tile in a kiln and ran it through a fast 05 cone glaze program and the tile came out perfectly clean. Whatever bonded to the tile glaze burned off in the kiln. So, really the design using this method is a tough design adhered to the tile glaze, not something that becomes integrated into the tile glaze.
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 года назад
Thanks for the report. I dont have acess to a kiln but its great to hear how perminant the markings are. It definitly leaves a very tough engraving on a tile. Thank you 🙏 Do you mix your ceramic and laser work together? This could be a very cool way to make something unique!

One of the things I struggle with, as a beginner, is how what you may have done with your laser may compare to what I should do with mine? I mean, knowing that someone used 1000 speed and 35% power doesn't seem very helpful unless their laser is the same as mine. And sometimes, the specs of the laser used are not even given. Top video. One question tho. I’m redoing my bathroom soon and want to engrave a heap of tiles for the wall. Is there some way to put a robust glaze over the whole thing after engraving ? I reckon the engraved tiles would be a bugger to clean mould out of the engraving, any abrasive cleaner that will get into the engraving would also degrade the engraving
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream Год назад
Thank you for the feedback, Ian. It's great to hear that the video helped you explore using your laser device. My suggestion would be to try creating a tile using NWT method and see how the surface reacts to something like sandpaper! The image is engraved into the surface, and there is little chance of the image being damaged, even if you use an abrasive cleaner. Still, if you want a protective coating to help with cleaning, you have several choices; ultimately, the option is yours. Love you to join our Facebook group and share your tiles and bathroom results 👍

Hello Gill, I am a new owner of on xtool d1 10 watt laser. First thank you for the tutorials and the live stream. Do you by chance have a “nortons” white tile burn test pattern that I can use? Just so I have a 1 to 1 comparisonA lot of videos that mentions a burn card/test burn for x material. In this case ceramic tile. I have burned a several test tile, but even setting my laser to say 100 pwr/ 1000mm/s my burns/etching looks like crap. They never match anywhere close to what I am watching. I truly have no doubt that I am to blame. It is like Lt Worf would probably feel if he had to fix the warp core……engine..,. Gil that was just for you. :)

Thanks for the video. As I understand it, the paint is just to transfer the laser's energy to the tile, so I'm wondering why white, which reflects most of the laser energy? Why not a darker color?
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 года назад
Great question Jere! I believe one of the components in the paint creates the reaction and allows the energy to transfer efficiently into the tile. White is a colour that has this component in its chemical make-up. If you want to know more, check out Norton's Den of Lasers. They are masters at this process and can explain why this happens the way it does. The link to their Facebook group is in the description :)

@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 года назад
As you are using the laser to etch a tile, using a layer of spray paint to transfer the energy, you will have the paint being atomised and sent into the surrounding air as it is being processed. I would strongly suggest having an exhaust fan, filter, and/or housing for your laser if you plan to be doing a lot of engraving. Likewise, having your laser in a well-ventilated area will also help minimise the percentage of particles in the air. This is my advice when using a laser to engrave and cut any material, not just etching tiles.

I use an Emblaser 2 which is 5 watt diode laser. You can use this method with a diode or C02 laser once you have worked out what the optimum settings are for your laser. You can learn how to work those settings here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bQTFEv7uGn0.html What power laser are you using?

Why did you bother painting it if you wiped the paint off at the end?
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 года назад
Hi SolarDrew, The chemicals in the paint allow the marking to happen on the tile. When you wipe off the paint at the end of the job, you can see the results on the tile surface. The paint acts as a transfer medium. Of course, you don't have to clean it off; it is totally up to you! :)

I think you got the timing wrong. It would actually be 102 minutes. I would love to see you do this with Titanium Dioxide power mixed with alcohol. Easier to remove with just water and a paper towel, no post sealing necessary.

@@LaserLivestream I took a picture of my girlfriend and her dog and i'm trying to either engrave it on a tile or slate, I'm not having much luck at all. I'm using lightburn and my laser is Neje 30W.

Don’t put your laser to 100% power unless you wanna fry it

Thanks for the advice. Could you please point me to some documentation about frying your laser at 100% so we can make sure to get the right information out there for everyone 🙏

A mil is .001", I don't think your supposed to call a millimeter a mil.
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 года назад
Ahhh... I see what happened here. Your right, in American English, a mil is 0.01. In British English, a mil is used as 1 millimetre. Same issue that got NASA in trouble when landing a river on Mars. Thanks for the heads up! 👍

why are all of these people engraving tiles? I keep seeing these tile videos. Why is this everyone's go-to material? I don't understand. What are you doing with them that makes a tile such a preferred medium? Just curious. There are so many materials to engrave and I just keep seeing tile videos.

What materials are you using and for to what end?
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 года назад
I would guess that tiles are easy to get a hold of and the results are very interesting. Given that tiles can also absorb a lot of energy without the fear of setting the material alight, they make sense for a beginner to use if they wanted to run a project and get a result. That would be my best guess as to why they have become so popular in the laser hobby world. What materials do you use with your laser?
