This is a not so quick rundown of using Lightburn for the xTool D1 Pro and also applies to the original D1. It's broken into chapters to try to make it a little easier to digest. I hope you find this useful in some way.

What a wonderful tutorial. It's much more than an introduction to LightBurn. By the end of the video, I found myself wishing it was already over! I don't have a laser engraver yet, because I haven't made my choice of machine. But now I already know a lot about LightBurn. And as I am comfortable with line drawing software including F360, my learning curve will be fast. I still have to decide on a machine! A big thank you to you from France, for taking the time to make a video of such quality !!!!

Ryan, Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain everything . I'm a little confused as to how you can place an object on the spoil board and cut things out without damaging the board. I'm obviously missing something, but i feel so much more confident in conquering my laser than ever before thanks to you.
@BusterBeagle3D
@BusterBeagle3D 2 месяца назад
Well a spoilboard simply by the name is meant to take some damage so the surface below does not. However if you are talking about cutting then I highly recommend the use of a honeycomb. It lifts the part up and adds air behind the piece and greatly reduces charring or damage to the back of the part. Obviously this means the grid is less useful so that typically when I rely on framing.

Thank you for the video. When going over the left tool bar, you mentioned you didn't see much benefit from the circular array tool. At first glance I agree, but last weekend, I needed to make a circle with objects equally spaced around it. This tool was just the trick. Drag the circle, create the object, tell it where to start (0°) and how many copies to make. You wind up with perfectly spaced objects all around your circle!

Something from a total noobe. I understand LightBurn to an extent and you did an excellent job of explaining this software. Now my hangup is the speed. On the basic test from the online generator you showed the grid going from 100 to 500; then on the other grid 12k to 24k. This has me totally lost I know it's probably something simple I'm missing, but this has me and others wondering LOL. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this video.
@BusterBeagle3D
@BusterBeagle3D Год назад
Hi Kat, Happy to help. The D1 Pro can engrave at speeds of up to 24,000 mm/min. So that one grid is testing engraving speeds from 12,00mm/min to 24,000 mm/min. If you slowed the machine down to 100mm/min you would be cutting into the surface pretty deep depending on what version you have. You also need to pay close attention where people are talking about speed since some people use mm/min and some use mm/sec. So 24,000mm/min can also sometimes be displayed as 400mm/sec you just need to be careful as to which one you are using.
@kittyrings
@kittyrings Год назад
@@BusterBeagle3D Bless you! I'am cautious when I read some of advice on settings...because of what you just said...That is what can be confusing. (I have the D1 10W and use mm/min) and in the console it says 18000 does that sound right? I certainly do not want to start a fire LOL.
@BusterBeagle3D
@BusterBeagle3D Год назад
@@kittyrings Speed is determined by how powerful your laser is and how dark you are looking to engrave or cut. 18,000 has to be mm/min otherwise that would be 1,080,000mm/sec which no laser can do. Honestly you are somewhat safe guarded in your firmware where it has a max speed set and no matter what crazy high number you put it will only ever move at the max speed. What you want to be careful is of the cutting speeds. 1.6mm/sec =100mm/min which will cut pretty deep, 1.6mm/min = Fire.

@BusterBeagle3D

You are very welcome. It’s really hard to recommend settings without know what type of wood you are talking about. Even your environment can change the way things work. Best to do a power speed test to really know. You could also check the XTool Facebook group for others who have done it as well for a general range to start from.

@BusterBeagle3D
@BusterBeagle3D Год назад
Hello. Technically you can use the grid but I'm not sure if the position of the 1064 laser is in the exact same spot. I don't have one but I'm guessing that it isn't. You can still use the grid to line up your pieces but I feel like the absolute coordinates will be off a little bit.
@stevebryson5464
@stevebryson5464 Год назад
Thanks very much. Appreciate your insights. If I may ask a question regarding changing the burn order of layers in order to make the cut that last operation: can LightBurn insert a pause before the cut? Just thinking that I would need to change the laser focus before starting the cut.
@BusterBeagle3D
@BusterBeagle3D Год назад
From reading the forums I don't think that this is a feature they offer. However since you can set layers to Output or not Output you could essentially run all of the engravings first and then run the cuts after, even from the same file. Just turn off output on the cuts and then switch it after it engraves. If you are using absolute coordinates everything should line up.

@BusterBeagle3D

The same grid for the pro would also work with the original D1. Only issue is that you won’t have limit switches with the original so you would have to find a way to manually find the home position. Something like this might help. www.thingiverse.com/thing:5274995

GM. Thanks for the reply. Ill try it as soon as i get home from work. Would that make my laser move opposite front and back(im assuming thats the Y direction) also, would that be responsible for it burning upside down and reversed side to side?
@BusterBeagle3D
@BusterBeagle3D 8 месяцев назад
From what you described that would be my best guess for what’s going on. It of course could be something else but I would try that first. Also if that doesn’t work I would suggest doing a test in XTool creative space just to see if it works as expected or not. That would rule out a hardware issue if it works in there.
@Jake-kl6xl
@Jake-kl6xl 10 месяцев назад
What power is it better to go with: 100% or 80%? I know I can adjust speed but what power is better for the laser to let it last long? Or it is vital only for CO2 lasers and a diod laser can be used on 100% all the time to speed up the process? Please advise.

<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="171">2:51</a> This setting is not here because of the accuracy of the red cross position, but the wide variety of lasers supported by Lightburn. Because the cross or dot is often not exactly where the the laser will target a value may need to be put in here if not already done in the laser cutter's native software or if Lightburn doesn't carry those over when opening.

Thank you for this excellent tutorial and your time. I have a question how can I engrave objects larger than my laser bed using the xtool d1 pro? Basically a 6 foot long birch plywood. I am currently using the creative space and don’t see any options to do that unless I do it manual sections using layers and is little error prone. Will love to learn how you will handle this scenario and if Lightburn will be the way to go. Did see some other videos using Lightburn but got little lost with them. Your step by step explanation is very nice, that’s why requesting you for help. Regards KK

Hello thank you for making these videos, I have come across your video and am very impressed because other videos people don't teach you all the functions of light burn and you go one by one which is very helpful. you are a good teacher. by the way i have bought a NEJE 2S with an 80-watt laser. I have been having problems getting images to burn properly they turn out dotted instead of lined. Do I need to program the neje 2s with light burn and if I do how would I go about doing that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks Noah

Hello. Much of this could depend on either your Line Interval or the dpi or even the dithering method that you are using. Without knowing your settings it's hard to know what your issue is. Plus be careful when choosing your settings because I'm not aware of a 80W output power diode laser. My guess is that is the machine power which is misleading to consumers. You probably have a 10-20W laser.

Simply love this video. Have used Lightburn for more than 3 years but learned a lot. Do you have an explanation on why I don’t see the runtime? I used to be able to see this with my Eleksmaker A3 Pro but not on my xTool D1…

I'm glad you loved it! I'm however not sure why you can't see the runtime. I honestly don't trust it when I see it anyway.

@@BusterBeagle3D I think that cuts are so simple and the code is so small in sixe that when doing cuts, the entire code can fit in the D1's internal buffer - when I do engraving it still shows the runtime but like you I never trust it - I typically expect to be 2 times longer than the preview time

Ryan thank you for videos, I am new to laser engraving I just purchased the DX1 tool. 10 watt laser I also purchased Lightburn, with the lightburn software I can frame it hit start and it will engrave backwards I’ve tried mirror that just makes it worse if you could help would greatly appreciate it

Make sure you installed the configure file I mention in the beginning of the video. The home position should be in the top left corner so if you set it up backwards it will engrave backwards.

This is an excellent tutorial. Is it possible to use the camera with light burn on the D1 Pro?
@BusterBeagle3D
@BusterBeagle3D Год назад
There are aftermarket kits that you can buy to use a camera with a D1 Pro. If you check out GeeksAtLarge on Etsy or his own website he has a lot of information on that.

Great Video. I also appreciate the templates from etsy. You stated the workable size for the 20w is actually a little smaller than 430x400 but xtool says 430x400 is correct. Can you please tell me what it should actually be set on for the 20w? Thank you
@BusterBeagle3D
@BusterBeagle3D Год назад
If you go to the xTool website and click on the D1 Pro and then scroll all the way down to the SPECS you can see the workable area of all of the lasers. It lists the 20W at 430x390 so that is what I was going off of. If you load that .lbdev file into Lightburn from the xTool website they only have one version which is 430x400 but that's actually too large for the 20W. It won't hurt anything to use that but just know not to try to burn something past Y390 if using the 20W.

Thank you! Quick question-the extension file on the light burn website that you mentioned having to download if you’re using the D1 pro, is that for windows or Mac. Does it make a difference? Meaning do you need it no matter what operating system am I using?
@BusterBeagle3D
@BusterBeagle3D Год назад
Shouldn't make a difference. The files are for Lightburn and xTool Creative space which should work on both.

"BEST XTOOL-LIGHTBURN VIDEO" This is by far the most instructive video on this subject I have seen. The concise manner in which you approach the subject and the sequence you presented the information made this a perfect lesson to all who seek rescue from wasting time doing it all wrong. I am very thankful and look forward to watching more of what you are teaching.

Hello! I'm just about to watch this video but thought I would ask this question anyways, if I may please? I have a 20W Xtool D1 Pro laser machine on the way. Are you aware of whether or not the Xtool Creative Space software can process 3D depth map images for wood engraving? Or, I am to use Lightburn because it can do it? Very curious, thanks.
@BusterBeagle3D
@BusterBeagle3D Год назад
Not sure how much more it could process the file other then the power is deeper in the blacks vs the white but there is no other specific depth setting that I know of in CS.

Great video but what about using honeycomb and placement of object .How will laser find its locatiom
@BusterBeagle3D

I mostly rely on framing while cutting. I typically use the "From current position" mode when cutting and not the absolute coordinates.

Great video sir!! I absolutely appreciate this! Do you or anyone here know a way of importing images or anything from a cricut into lightburn? This would help me significantly
@BusterBeagle3D
@BusterBeagle3D 11 месяцев назад
I’m not familiar with that software but if it doesn’t export and SVG or some other type of image you could always do a Print Screen or SNIP in windows to copy the image and then paste it into Lightburn. Then you can use the trace function in Lightburn to turn it into line-work.

I didn't know LightBurn could do THAT!
