A friend asked me to clean up his great grandfather's Coleman lantern for him. He brought me a very dirty but basically complete 1929 Coleman 228. This lantern is often called a slant due to the orientation of the generator. It cleaned up nicely with relatively little work. More recently he's had some trouble lighting it so I thought a video tutorial might be helpful.
Turns out his difficulty lighting was the R55 generator, I'd told him to flip the cleaning rod a couple times before lighting. He flipped the lever leaving it up which left the cleaning rod in the gas tip blocking air flow. When I got it I didn't notice it was up and lit the lantern as I always do and it worked fine.
