The primary reason ive converted a few to Kerosene is that in addition tobhaving mutiple fuel options, kerosene fuel have a much longer shelf life. Great videos.
The seller's name is ro_ewin if you search for Coleman LP adapter his auction will come up. He's really nice. If you buy an adapter please note that you've watched my video.
Love the video. Coleman fuel is $48 a gallon here and jet a is 8$ a gallon. So I want to convert all my lanterns and stoves possible to kerosene. Any other coleman stoves and lanterns you convert to kero I'll watch !
Scored one of those stoves in original box just like that and got the adapter from Ron. Works great. If anyone wants mine, I would be willing to sell it.
OK dumb question about how to get the mantle to balloon out without blowing a hole in it....again maybe a coleman issue. Full pressure right away? If i dont use full pressure i get a strange shape and not full brightness. Full pressure blows a hole in the coleman ones😢
Coleman mantles are more fragile than others, especially newer manufacture ones. I made a video some years ago where I said I'd never had an issue with them, then I pulled out a mantle that had a hole in it. Completely unplanned it just happened that way. I've had better luck using less pressure the first time I use a mantle.
Is this a comedy video like your 335 video? A hacksaw and a step bit are the tools for this job. I ran a timer and it took me 1 minute 43 seconds to cut the cap/pipe sleeve, drill my hole, deburr the hole, and fit the pipe sleeve into the cap turned cup. By using the step bit I was able to slowly enlarge the hole and get the sleeve to fit so tightly I had to tap it with a wooden block to seat it into the cup. This made brazzing it in place very easy and looked great.
I had to replace the Schrader valve on my new 11/76 Turd. The top of the Schrader valve snapped off. I had to heat the fuel air tube, and the remainder of the Schrader valve popped out. The Turd is running great now. Thanks for making this video.
In making the video I had to repeatedly remove schrader valves. I think I ruined every one I had to remove. IIRC I went through like 4 in making the video...
I see you posted this vid 13 yrs ago ! Fantastic! Hope you’re still well and keeping them lit . I was lucky enough to get a fairly unused kerosene 639 recently and love it. Thanks for sharing this vid.
Flying insects will get in to the air inlets and cook. Moths especially are big dumb and attracted to the light. For mantles I prefer the Thorium compound soaked mantels that glow with a very white light. Coleman calls these "Silk lite" mantles.
The best LED improvement video I have seen so far. I would have gone with the sledge-o-matic instead of the splitting maul. An excellent compacting device for taking out the trash.
I just did this on a 220J. Only added the preheat cup, didn't mess with the generator. I was surprised how easy it lit. No smell. Just a bright as coleman fuel.
is super cheap and found everywhere just thought if someone got scarce on gas and kerosene maybe a percent of alcohol to stretch a supply might work @@LanternLabs
Great video, another reason for converting to kerosene is that in some parts of the world white gas or Coleman fuel is either not easily available or the price is exorbitant. I got into lanterns a couple of yrs ago and not really understanding the difference between kerosene and white gas I bought a few lanterns in Ireland. Traditionally it’s kerosene that was burned in lamps in UK & irl. ( Tilley & bialaddin being the main sellers) however amongst the lanterns I purchased was a Coleman 220F. Coleman fuel is available here but the nearest stockist is a 2hr drive away and then its €13 for a small bottle of I think 750ml. I since bought a Coleman 639 but I would like to bring the 2 mantle 220F back to life.
I very often use old gas in stoves. The cleaning tip being on the valve makes them easy to clean. I've lit up a lot of lanterns and stoves with gas that was decades old. A smell check is in order, if it smells okay I use it.
Kerosene(Paraffin to us Brits) is far safer, try dropping a teaspoon full of Kero on the garage floor and dropping a match in it, nothing happens! do the same with White gas and poof!! instant inferno. If you were fool enough to unscrew the filler cap of a lit white fuel lantern you would have a hospital visit, if you didn't die that is, and a burnt down house. Do the same with Kero and your lamp would just go out. Kerosene is a lot less volatile, It also keeps longer!
Turning the knob down doesn't work, the limitation is the size of the gas jet which is so small that you can emulate it with the knob. I have another video with big mantles, short answer: kinda.
I had a lantern from.1974..pump didnt work..i simply flipped the leather seal arond and oiled it and worked like new...amazing how rhes old things last so long and keep going
I've had to replace quite a small number of leather pump cups, maybe 3 or 4 out of more than 50 lanterns and stoves. I've gotten a couple lanterns and stoves that just didn't have a pump cup at all but usually if a leather pump cup is present it'll revive. The neoprene ones, not so much...
Hello, Late night I lit my 1500 Petromax, I used a Chinese Egret mantle (blue packing). Today I decided to clean the lantern and I found a stain on the central plate of the lantern that is almost imposible to remove. Do you think it is a matter of mantler's quality?. I don't know how to attach com pics un this format. Thanks in advance
Is the stain kind of blue? I don't know that I think a mantle could stain the metal. I think it more likely the heat has done it, especially if it can't be removed.
My 425f will not hold pressure, and when i turn the knob down to cook, my flame starts to turn yellow, i have replaced everything and still no good pressure. Im about to get rid of it.
Time for the dunk test, I've got a video on it. Pressurize the tank, dunk it in a pail of water and look for bubbles. Might want to pull the pump and see if the check valve is leaking too. If there are no leaks then it's that the FA rod isn't lifting. They lift on spring pressure so its easy for them to get glued into the tube.
Oooh, red is the worst. Heat is your friend for removing locktite but you'll need to be very careful to not also remove the solder that holds the bung and the paint from the fount. Start with a heat gun and work up from there, go slow and be careful.
@LanternLabs the heat gun helped, but it wasn't enough. I had to use a small pipe wrench to hold the fount and then an adjustable wrench to turn the valve. It was very tight!
Thank's for the post. I am in trouble with butane torches, what is the brand of your torch? It runs very well and powerful. I kick start my 425E stove the same manner. Since my fuel&air control knob doesn't shut down the liquid gasoline leaving the fuel vapors only, I need always to preheat the generator with a butane torch to start my stove. Also a video shoving the possible causes of my problem will be greatly appreciated :)
Thats actually a MAPP gas torch although I mostly use it with propane. You'll have to pull the valve out of the tank and ensure that the rod goes down into the FA tube and that the tube is open at the top. Pull the tube off and blow some air in through either end while plugging the other. The air should come out sideways near the top. Often just blowing some pressure through will dislodge whatever crud is there, if not soak it for an hour or so in some vinegar or citric acid, or CLR or whatever other mild acid you've got handy. Rinse good and try the air again. Repeat until the FA tube is clear. When pulling the valve DO NOT put pressure on the generator, you'll break it, ask me how I know. An adjustable wrench on the square block on the valve assembly will be your friend.
Awesome video. Now with the price of kerosene and fuel in general, probably easier to buy the cheapest white gas you can get, Ozark, Coleman or whatever other brand is out there.
I was kinda geeking out on Coleman lanters about 5 years ago and had found your channel. I have 3 220s ranging from B to F I beleieve and another one thats mod 70s. Id totally be down to take one of my newer 220s and convert it to kerosene if possible. I do have a 200A that spitting fuel out from the fount where the generator goes but haven't been super into Colemans or had the time. Just took my 7 year old son camping using my Milwaukee m12 lantern and headlamps which worked great but I want him to remember that classic Coleman white gas hiss that soo many associate that nostalgia with. You've kinda resparked my interest to go through my lanterns. Make sure the mantles are good and run em.
Leaking from around the generator is pretty common on kerosene lanterns, less so on white gas. The brass of the generator work hardens and sometimes doesn't make a good seal. You can anneal the generator flare by heating it until it just starts to glow, then dip it in water to cool. Don't get it real hot or it'll distort. Since a 200A is pretty common you could just get a new generator too.
Good afternoon, I just wanted to ask what your opinion was in regards to the compatibility the original petromax 500 cp mantles are to coleman 228D double mantle lantern? Thank you
Bought this same stove a few years ago for 5 dollars at a yard sale. Came with an empty can, I scored 4 new cans of fuel at a car show... 50 bucks for all 4 tho 😨
It'll work but will be on the small side. #24 Lancaster/Peerless (same thing) are equivalent to a Coleman #99. A little bit smaller than a #11 or #111.
Very informative... Can I ask you though based on this video though, your opinion on using a #111 mantle on a coleman 200 lantern, simply because the mantle is bigger and will therefore give off more light, than the #21 mantle I have been using? The coleman 200 lantern as you know has only 1 mantle while most others have 2. I want more light on my Coleman 200 lantern. ANYBODY!
The larger mantle for a model 200 (or 201/202/242 etc) would be a #99 which is bigger than a #21 but smaller than a #11 or #111. It gives more light but not twice as much. Really if you want more light the answer is more lanterns. In fact the answer is always more lanterns... ;)
@@LanternLabs THANK YOU !!....I really only use one lantern but have used 2 or more lanterns. The 200 lantern though is my favorite and over the 220s and 228s. Thank you again though for this valuable piece of info that is not in the books and ONLY comes thru experience like yours. RESPECT!!!
