Today, I switch out the lighting in my western green lizard enclosure, then explain the thoughts behind the changes made (explanation begins at 03:53 for those not interested in watching me install lights).

You're surprisingly good at all of this, most people would never of thought of things past heat and UVB, I'm most people by the way. I eagerly await you getting something like a tegu or large monitor

Thanks very much! Large species won’t be happening soon, I haven’t got the space! This summer I’m doing a 10x2.5x2’ vivarium for my dragon and that’ll be the biggest vivarium I’ve got.

try some of the aquarium lights that mimic day modes from dawn to dusk as some fish also need those UV and infer red ranges as well. (you will still need a heat lamp)

Brilliant video! I really am beginning to think I need to go back to the drawing board with heating and lighting, scrap everything I know already and relearn it in a very different way. This video was certainly eye opening, very informative and useful. Thank you as always my friend for everything you do!

Very informative video which got me thinking about my Grandis enclosure and my current light set up. I have a DHP + Shadedweller + JungleDawn and do find that she moves around a fair bit under the lights during the day. I run the DHP as the room gets very cold overnight but also I have a heatmat on the side of the tank and this is where she spends her nights. Following what you have done with this enclosure and your Day Gecko's I changed out the DHP yesterday for a floodlight type bulb as the basking bamboo to see if she would still come and bask under the light. I can now set the bulb to come on first, then the UV & JD which is a plus. Just not sure I can get one of the 'bulb' type LED lights on the top as it is only a 45x45x90 exo terra. Has got me thinking I may need to get a larger tank of 80 or 90 wide at some point to give more space for lighting.
@JTBReptiles
@JTBReptiles 3 года назад
Thanks, glad you enjoyed! Changing the DHP to a tungsten-halogen lamp was definitely a good move. Which one did you go for? You’ve identified a real problem with smaller enclosures: you can’t fit many lights on them! That was a huge drawback of my old lined day gecko viv which I’m now only using to grow on hatchlings before selling them. With 45cm width you could probably just about fit a spot LED on although it might be tricky depending on what UV lamp you’ve got.

@@JTBReptiles I went for the Solar Floodlight Bulb to start with. I am getting a good basking temperature. I considered a 50w halogen but as I have the bulb only a few inches above the bamboo i was unsure if the beam would be too narrow. Will have to take a picture of the top and send it to you so you can take a look. The top is very crowded as I have the arcadia dome on the mesh!

Remember that basking is about radiation, not temperatures. More on this next weekend!

Interesting. I’m researching for possibly owning a Uromastyx. Even though I’m not new to keeping reptiles, the heating/lighting requirements are somewhat intimidating.

They are, it must be said - but we're getting close to a point where I believe things are going to start getting easier. The hardest part is eliminating what you THINK you know and starting learning afresh - I've had to do this an infinite number of times in the past year!

I really liked this. I’m planning out a Panther Chameleon enclosure, i worked out i need loads of lights, its going to be 5ft x 5ft x 2.5ft so can’t figure out how to get a bit more visible light further down for plants, i want a gradient, but it seems to be an exponential gradient, I’m mean to say it drops of to almost shade. What do you think? Various spots angled into the bottom corners ?
@JTBReptiles
@JTBReptiles 3 года назад
If I were you, I’d have the lights all in the middle of the enclosure. I’d have two or three 3’ Jungle dawns and I’d have two spot LEDs or metal halides. That’ll get stuff growing like there’s no tomorrow! In my 3x3x1.5’ lined day gecko vivarium I have one 3’ Jungle Dawn, a spot LED, and a 35W metal halide and it’s doing great.

hi. I have a 150×60×60cm PVC terrarium housing my timon lepidus male. He currently have a Arcadia prot5 fixture t5 12% UVB 39w (87cm) covering roughly half of the terrarium. For heat I have the 100w ARCADIA mvb D3 bulb and a 75w halogen bulb on a dimmer. I want to brighten up the terrarium and have ordered the Arcadia jungle dawn Ledbar 51w (87cm). I am planning on mount it in front of the uvb fixture so there is a darker shaded area in the back. Is this the correct size for my terrarium or should I go with a smaler size? I also have live plants.

How close are your lamps to the basking spots mate? It looks quite close but maybe its the angle. Just trying to get an idea how close I can put the lamps to my water dragon

The principles could be applied to a blue tongue skink, yes - just make sure that the UV indices are appropriate and you’re good to go. As for corn snakes, I have a video on my corn snake’s rig coming out on Saturday, so keep your eyes peeled!
