Today, I remove all of the lighting from my bearded dragon setup, then put it all back alongside a new lamp. I then explain why the new arrangement constitutes a much better bearded dragon lighting setup.
Reptile lighting is all about replicating sunlight. We should be using lamps to replicate in both form and intensity the sunlight to which the herps we are keeping would expose themselves in nature; for bearded dragons, this means reasonably intense useful infrared (consisting of infrared A and infrared B), plenty of visible light, and UV indices ranging from ~5 at the basking area to 0 in the shade. We should also seek to replicate the changes in lighting which would naturally occur throughout the day, having the longest wavelengths becoming present earliest and disappearing latest. (Although I didn't talk about it in today's video, we should also wish to replicate yearly changes in sunlight conditions, altering day length depending on season - that's one for another day.)
What bearded dragon lighting is NOT about is offering temperatures. Not once in this episode did I mention temperatures, and for good reason: replicating sunlight is one thing, maintaining temperatures another. I will be back in a future video to discuss this concept in more detail.

Thanks for the lighting video. I've recently purchased a larger enclosure (4x2.5x4) for my beardie so I've had lighting on my mind again. I'm going to buy a LED spotlight to see if there is a change in behaviour, hopefully she'll bask more and be more active. Appreciate it. I'm going to trial them in my current 4x2x2 and see what happens.

Another great video! Thanks for continuing to pioneer in your free time! I've recently been thinking the husbandry term of 'temperature' being almost abolished in the hobby and replaced with 'radiation' would really make people consider what they are actually providing/not providing to their herps. I'd be interested to see your thoughts on lighting setups for other types of animals in the future, particularly rainforest scrub/floor dwelling species that don't bask.

Hello! Learning lots thank you. Are the long UVB T5's best across the centre of the enclosure like this then? (I was advised across the front with reflector). And is the heating video available please? Would really love to improve things for my beardie! xxx

Great information man! What do you uvb do you suggest? It’s for a 40 gallon tank and my bearded dragon is an adult. Was given to me so definitely planning on a bigger enclosure. And I know the mesh top to the enclosure has to do with which one as well. Thanks

Hi Joe great video . I have seen people now putting uvb strip light diagonally now I want to try it but the t5 I have is the 34 inch one and is to long to go diagonally in his 2 foot wide viv will the 22inch one be better .

What surface temperature are you getting for your basking spot? You mentioned you are going for maximum visible light with the basking lights and that they only turn off if the air temps tire gets too hot.

Do you have any ideas on how lighting setups for leopard geckos could advance too? I currently use a T5 UVB, a 100 watt tungsten lamp, and a T5 6000k grow light for my gecko.

Very good video. I think I will upgrade the lights next year for my enclosure (when I go bioactive!). I particularly like the idea of being able to give different amounts of light depending on the time of day. A question I have is how many thermostat do you use?

Thanks! I use one thermostat just to switch the tungsten halogen lamp off if (and only if) the enclosure is getting dangerously hot and a second to control the ambient temperature via the ceramic heat emitter. I am currently working on a video about heating herps, so stay tuned for that!

What bulb would you recommend for a 4x2x2 wood enclosure, arcadia d3 100w or 160w, I use currently a 160w on a zen habitat enclosure but it sits on the mesh and its perfect temps at 32°c but with a wood enclosure and it being inside would you go 100w?

Hadn't even considered the idea of only using half a reflector or in the case of a ProT5 or Eco T5 kit cutting part of the reflective sheet to achieve a more gradual UV gradient towards the cool end.

Thanks, I knew this video would convince you! There are Arcadia spot LEDs (40W jungle dawn www.reptiles.swelluk.com/jungle-dawn-40w-high-power-led-spot-light/) and Reptile Systems ones (35W New Dawn www.reptiles.swelluk.com/reptile-systems-new-dawn-spot-led-10w-35w/) but they’re really expensive! One thing I'd love to see is a comparison between your beardie kept as it is now after 6 months or longer and a same age/sex beardie that has been kept at "standard" (by pet shop or average caresheets standards) of care. It'd be a really interesting physiological comparison to make! Maybe you could ask a local rescue or a friend if you could film one of their dragons as the "standard" example? You could compare things like their colour, size, hunting instincts, activity levels, etc. Just a thought!

It would be very interesting indeed! I have kept my own dragon in many ways over the years (just go back through my videos and you’ll see), and I can say for certain that he’s never been better. If a proper experiment were to be done, it would have to involve a large number of closely-related individuals for results to be comparable and the effects due to idiosyncrasies muted. Hopefully it will happen one day!

What is the UVI while only the smaller T5 is on? Are you shooting for a certain number? Half of the maximum 5? Do you think the UVI gradient twice a day is what is contributing to the dragon’s improved behavior?

It’s about 3 at the basking zone when just one is on. I think the main contributor to his changed activity is the visible lighting, I had the UV lamps timed with the step-up prior to his activity change so I doubt it’s that.

Hey man absolutely love your channel! Question for you about this video… I bought that same 40W led light and it’s soooooooooo bright. Looks great but is it possible to be too bright? It’s in a 75 gallon tank (18 inch tall). I pretty much mimicked this exact set up and I LOVE it. Just worried it might be too bright. I guess the outback is way brighter? Just wondering what you think! Let me know please. Sending lots of love from Canada man!

Should be fine. Remember what you are seeing is contrast against the (extremely dim) surroundings, not absolute brightness. The absolute brightness offered by these lights at that sort of distance is really only comparable to sunlight on an overcast day or during early morning. If you want to reduce that contrast, you should add more background illumination with linear lamps, e.g. full-spectrum grow lights (LEDs or T5s).

Thanks for the reply man! I have a t5 5.0 reptisun uvb and it brightens everything up amazing in contrast to this led. I also put the uvb and led on a separate timer to mimmic a peak mid day bright sun intensity

Hi. I have been recomended to purchage UVB T5 in (at least 10% or 12%). I can tell you go with the 6%, but then have 2 lamps providing this? Does is make out for the same, or how does it work? Our dragon is a pygmy, dont know if it has an importance.

The distance in our enclosure from basking to UVB lamps is about 30-35 cm. But I like have you have done it with more than just one lamp. So i guess my qustion is, will the UVB become to strong if i have 2 lamps with 12% and also a jungle dawn. Should i lower the % to 6%?

A ceramic heat emitter. This is involved in maintaining enclosure temperatures, which is not to do with lighting.

I know when my dragon needs a new bulb cos he does slow down and get lazy. Soon as I put the new tube in he is super charged!

You should be replacing your bulbs as a matter of course, not waiting until you begin to see the side effects of using a lamp with diminished output.

@@JTBReptiles yeah I change my bulbs every 12 months as per manufacturer recommendation 👍🏻 The fact is he is also getting older, kinda happens as time goes buy so he is lazy anyway 😂 The difference when I do change the bulb, the first few weeks he is mental case
