I'm not a photographer but I would call myself a visual artist (painter, graphic designer, tattooer, I'm doing a lot of things) and these tips are actually very helpful for painting portraits as well. (sometimes I have problems with light sources but now I know what looks best and why) thanks very much, it was very informative and I enjoyed learning something new today:)

Absolutely incredible to watch someone who has perfected their art to this level. You know exactly what effect/result you will achieve beforehand and then proceed to prove the theory which is a testament to your skill. Thoroughly enjoyed watching and subscribed.

I have to watch this again because all I did was watch Rayne the whole time, LOL.

You've also just clearly demonstrated that we don't always need a ton of studio lighting, softboxes, modifiers etc. Just a couple of background rolls and a Garage :)

AMAZING VIDEO! This is what photography is about, understanding lighting. Tired of the videos about how my camera can shoot 30 fps and can aquire the eye 1 mile away and track a person trying his hardest not to be photographed.

To sum this up: start with an amazingly beautiful model, find an open big ass garage door with what appears to be a southern exposure and an incredibly sharp Nikon lens with camera. Did I forget anything? Easy peasy! LOL. Excellent tutorial.

Just found you on RU-vid, and I am VERY happy I did. I only recently came out of a coma. To my horror, I have lost 35 years of my past. From 1986 to a year ago is all I can remember. From1986 backwards I am fine. My wonderful wife, Josie, has put out a SOS to all our friends around the World to fill in a very large gap. Part of my (more than hobby ), was Nikon based everything. I found your page and thought, YES… found one! The One being the levels you range from that I can watch to get my brain a back on the road from one source... You. I cannot go out yet as I have to learn to walk again. After my daily physio instruction from my hospital team, I go into my studio the my wife made for me and spend the day catching up on history and also what is the latest in Photography. None of my 8 Cameras have 1,000 actuations so I have decided to stay wit the gear I have. Kudos to a great presentation on an important media,

GREAT info - but if you say "girl" one more time........? Substitute words could be "model" If you want to photograph a "female" or "model" or female model.... or maybe even a woman? She is definitely not a girl, just like she isn't a doll. I know it is just automatic for you to say, but language changes, so do people and the times. Thank you and yes she is a gorgeous model.

“Take your time“ seems one of the best pieces of advice besides how to turn. As a pro, can you predict most lighting outcomes, or do you still have to test, which of course, takes time?

I was looking for a tutorial on how to photograph elderly people in the most flattering way. Thank you so much!!

While I really appreciate the emphasis on which way to look depending on whether it's a man or woman, I feel like pushing their chests so far forward or leaning to the side so dramatically makes them look offbalanced and unnatural. I'd rather open the shoulders on men by twisting their torso, without leaning. And I'd rather the women push their chest forward while bringing their shoulders back, instead of having them lean too far forward. Great video though, this is just my personal opinion.

As an illustrator/artist it's amazing to see that photographers think a lot like painters. It's all about the shapes!

Not a photographer, just giving an opinion on a video that showed up for no reason on my youtube feed. I guess to me it all looks so lifeless and fake. I mean, I guess it's a great picture, that I'd skip right over without a second thought. I'm not trying to be rude, but it looks like someone taking pictures of a sextoy. Maybe I'll put it like this, "It's a perfectly uninteresting picture." But hey, it's got good lighting.

This video is so helpful. Always a great refresher. I share it with lots of people when I come across someone lighting women directly full frontal. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to this field!

I feel like, if a model has a low enough waist-to-hip ratio like the lady in the video, this kind of sideways posing actually makes her curves look less pronounced, if that makes sense. It does seem to smooth and balance out the curves nicely, though.

your explanation is excellent and you are a true teacher. I feel everything you say is a pearl and a practical lesson and there’s no B.S. I’d love to buy your books and watch your videos. Photography is my casual hobby and I love taking good photographs of friends and family. There’re times I don’t like the photos I take but don’t know what to change. As a cosplayer- why didn't they use the mesh contacts!? It impares the vision but you still can see and unless you're very close, you won't see the mesh.
