@phlotographer
@phlotographer 3 года назад
actually if possible a Northern exposure is preferred. Artists from all time have always tried to use a "north light" when creating paintings particularly of the human form. Also, anywhere you can create subtractive lighting which as defined by Leon Kennamer as "the creation of highlight and shadow by blocking light from one side of the face" which was so effectively done by JG.

Just found you on RU-vid, and I am VERY happy I did. I only recently came out of a coma. To my horror, I have lost 35 years of my past. From 1986 to a year ago is all I can remember. From1986 backwards I am fine. My wonderful wife, Josie, has put out a SOS to all our friends around the World to fill in a very large gap. Part of my (more than hobby ), was Nikon based everything. I found your page and thought, YES… found one! The One being the levels you range from that I can watch to get my brain a back on the road from one source... You. I cannot go out yet as I have to learn to walk again. After my daily physio instruction from my hospital team, I go into my studio the my wife made for me and spend the day catching up on history and also what is the latest in Photography. None of my 8 Cameras have 1,000 actuations so I have decided to stay wit the gear I have. Kudos to a great presentation on an important media,

GREAT info - but if you say "girl" one more time........? Substitute words could be "model" If you want to photograph a "female" or "model" or female model.... or maybe even a woman? She is definitely not a girl, just like she isn't a doll. I know it is just automatic for you to say, but language changes, so do people and the times. Thank you and yes she is a gorgeous model.
@JerryGhionisPhotography
@JerryGhionisPhotography 3 года назад
I appreciate that feedback and could definitely use more variety in my terminology. I don't want to use the term "woman" either because these poses are equally as effective for young girls. In Australia "girls" and "boys" is often a term you use in casual setting when talking about your friends, as you might you "girls and guys" in other places. But changing it up is a good idea and something I'll pay attention to.

“Take your time“ seems one of the best pieces of advice besides how to turn. As a pro, can you predict most lighting outcomes, or do you still have to test, which of course, takes time?
@JerryGhionisPhotography
@JerryGhionisPhotography 3 года назад
It depends. If I've been in that environment before then you can very close guess what your settings will be. When working in a studio, for example, I always do a test shot before I begin. But I find that over the years (and the more experienced you get), then the amount of time it takes to test the lighting because shorter because you're able to more closely guess what it will be.

I was looking for a tutorial on how to photograph elderly people in the most flattering way. Thank you so much!!
@phlotographer
@phlotographer 3 года назад
generally as noted by a great Classical photographer Joe Zeltsman, one area where the female can be photographed in a non feminine pose is an elderly person. Also dark clothing can be photographed in the masculine pose on a woman where the body and head is toward the direction of light. JG was just masterfully showing the feminine pose. Females are lucky -- just not a great idea to use a male in a feminine pose.

While I really appreciate the emphasis on which way to look depending on whether it's a man or woman, I feel like pushing their chests so far forward or leaning to the side so dramatically makes them look offbalanced and unnatural. I'd rather open the shoulders on men by twisting their torso, without leaning. And I'd rather the women push their chest forward while bringing their shoulders back, instead of having them lean too far forward. Great video though, this is just my personal opinion.

Not a photographer, just giving an opinion on a video that showed up for no reason on my youtube feed. I guess to me it all looks so lifeless and fake. I mean, I guess it's a great picture, that I'd skip right over without a second thought. I'm not trying to be rude, but it looks like someone taking pictures of a sextoy. Maybe I'll put it like this, "It's a perfectly uninteresting picture." But hey, it's got good lighting.

I feel like, if a model has a low enough waist-to-hip ratio like the lady in the video, this kind of sideways posing actually makes her curves look less pronounced, if that makes sense. It does seem to smooth and balance out the curves nicely, though.

You just need to adjust your subject's position (or your position) to make sure there is still enough light on the subject's face. I'm not afraid to her to put her hair behind her shoulders or behind her ears if the hair is blocking the light too much. Sometimes, I'll go all the way and purposely have the hair block part of the face. Have fun with it!

Nice tips and good teaching 👍 I want your book, but unable to get it in India. Please help me to get one. Actually, black and white photography is very much required that lighting tends than color photography.

Dear Jerry, thank you for your perfect and detailed revue of lighting. Amazing class. One more question: How do you get the camera display in the video with your Nikon?

At first, the video seems super long. But it is hard to find one so in depth and detailed as this one. Good job explaining.
