Enjoyable video as just purchased my Q3 and looking at flash options for street. Would you mind sharing the settings you used, especially interested in how you balanced the flash for daylight shooting. Many thanks.
Hi there, Thank you for watching and I'm glad you found the video enjoyable! Congratulations on your new Q3 - it's an amazing camera for street photography, portrait photography and fashion. On the channel there are may videos about it. Regarding the settings I used for daylight shots, I worked with ISO 3200, an aperture of f/8, and a shutter speed of 1/500s. I adjusted the flash power manually to get the right exposure. It's a bit of trial and error at first, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. One thing to remember with the FlashQ Q20II, as you explore your options, is that it’s fantastic for use as an off-camera flash due to its portability and ease of setup. However, it does not have TTL (Through The Lens) metering, so you’ll be working with manual adjustments. This might seem a bit challenging at first, especially in dynamic street settings, but it offers great control and learning opportunities in flash photography. Hope this helps, and I can't wait to see the amazing shots you'll capture with your Q3 and whichever flash you choose. Happy shooting!
Hey, AlessandroThanks again for another cool video. I have heard a lot about that flash the last several months. One of my friends has one too. I think it's cool and is a great piece of kit for street photography because of its compact size and weight. The lack of TTL is going to keep it out of the hands of a lot of beginners though. Nice piece of kit for those with some flash experience though. I may eventually get one to use with my Mamiya RZ67 & Pentax 67. Lightweight accessories are very much appreciated with both of those kits. Thanks again for a fun and informative video. Great to see your two best buds with you back-to-back too. Cheers.
Hey buddy! First off, thank you so much for your kind words and for tuning into the video - as usual it means really a lot! You're spot on about the FlashQ Q20II; its compact size and weight make it a fantastic choice for street photography, allowing photographers to move around more freely and capture those spontaneous moments. I completely agree with your point about the lack of TTL. It's true that this might be a bit daunting for beginners who are used to automatic settings. However, as you rightly mentioned, it's a great opportunity for those with some experience in manual flash settings to really hone their skills and get creative with their lighting. Using the FlashQ Q20II with your Mamiya RZ67 and Pentax 67 sounds like an exciting prospect! Considering the heft of those cameras, a lightweight flash would definitely be a welcome addition to your kit. I'd love to hear how it works out if you decide to go for it. ...And love your last long exposure street photos on Instagram
Hello! Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked the photos taken with the Leica Q3 and the flash in daylight. It's indeed a fantastic camera. I appreciate your interest in the Q20ii. This flash works really well with the Q3. Regarding the daytime photos, yes, I did some post-processing. I mainly used Lightroom for color adjustments, contrast, and sharpness. The RAW files from the Leica Q3 are very flexible for editing, so I tried to enhance the natural beauty of the photos. I pushed a little bit in the color grading to add a personal touch. Also, I have good news. I plan to make a video about photo editing. In a future video, I'll show in detail this editing process, so please look forward to it! It will take times but I promise to do it. Thank you so much for your interest in my video, and I hope you find my other videos enjoyable as well. Let me know which videos you like more. I look forward to your continued support! 👍📸
Great stuff!! I’ve always been a fan of the “off camera flash” look, and have this flash myself with my Q2. Were you using a blue gel on the Halloween shots? The skin tones and whites looked on the “cold” side?
Hey there! Thank you so much for the kind words, I am really glad you enjoyed the video! It's great to hear from a fellow off-camera flash enthusiast, especially one using this setup with a Q2. Regarding the Halloween shots you have a keen eye! I actually didn't use the blue gel for those photos. Instead, I tweaked the images in post-processing to achieve that slightly cooler, eerie Halloween ambiance. Trying to set the right mood for the theme. Speaking of gels, it's interesting the you brought that up. While I haven't experimented with them yet, I am actually planning to try the orange one soon. I think it could act a nice, warm touch to the skin tones, which could be fantastic I guess. Have you used any of the gels with your flash? I'd love to hear about your experiences or any tips you might have.
Yes, the orange gel with the flash works a treat to beef-up the skin tones!👍 Love your fashion shoot videos! It’s really great to see that 28mm lens used in fashion and portraits! I’m really into B & W photography so I’m really looking at the Q2 Monochrom which is brilliant for low-light photography! Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for your kind words and support! I'm really glad you're enjoying the fashion shoot videos. I share your love for the 28mm lens. It's an excellent tool for fashion and portrait photography because it challenges me to think more creatively about composition and the environment, rather than relying solely on background blur. It's great to hear that you appreciate this approach as well. Your interest in B&W photography sounds intriguing, especially your consideration of the Q2 Monochrom for low-light settings. I haven't had the chance to try out a Monochrom myself, but it sounds like an amazing piece of equipment. Have you had any experience using it? Thanks again for engaging with the content and sharing your insights.
I haven’t used the Q2M yet but would probably use a red filter to boost contrast and expose for highlights as I’ve heard that overexposure in highlight areas cannot be saved detail-wise, but shadows have a lot more depth. The 28mm is as you say is “a challenge” for composition in fashion and portraiture but that makes it all the more interesting, both in taking the photos and the end results!
