Saw him live at Liberty Hall in Houston. My drunk friend asked if he could buy him a beer between sets. He looked him straight in the eye and said why would I need a beer from you boy.? I loved it. He was amazing. Fearless and fantastic
Lightnin was late for a gig. Promoter says to one of the backing band. Where the fuck is lightnin he's late has he not got a watch. Bandmember says ole lightnin dont need no watch. Lightnin decides what time it is. Coolest mutha ever
109 years ago Samuel John "Lightnin'" Hopkins was born on this day.. March 15, 1912. The day blues was born.. We respect all the blues greats but Lightnin' was one of a kind..
This is the kind of stuff that I think of when I think of the blues. Smooth as butter on a hot griddle. Thanks so much for posting it on the internet. Today’s young pickers need to listen n’ play this kind of roots music.
Try to listen to music that ahas a similar BpM of the human heart and you will likely be less stressed? This hyper and fast music of today sucks and agitates everyone even they do t want to admit!
There are not many things in life that are perfect, but this recording is one of them. And that unexpected way the ending was done is like a kick, several kicks in the head. Lightnin’, wherever your spirit is, I hope you know how much people love you still.
No, someone who has never tried bending to a note knows what it’s like, not to mention all the many hours of practice that go into it. There’s no real reference point - it’s all feel
His playing on this song is so dark...almost with a spooky undertone. But he ends it with a little humer when his shotgun just won't fire. I just love his style.
My Daddy’s music he loved him the most soulful sound I ever heard besides my Grandmother singing spirituals was him singing “ Prison Blues! Makes you wanna cry inside every time you hear it!
For the guy who wanted the list. Lightnin’ is arguably the best, but try; Leadbelly, son house, skip james, blind willie mc tell, blind willie Johnson, scrapper Blackwell, blind lemon Jefferson and Robert Johnson. They are all acoustic blues guitarists which is what was used in this song. Many of them have more of a delta blues style though. Lightnin went through phases like many of them as blues evolved when electric became more accessible. If you prefer the more modern sounding style and electric blues; muddy waters, howlin wolf, John lee hooker, Elmore James. For lightnin song suggestions, baby please don’t go, black ghost blues, nothin but the blues, mojo hand. Hopefully that helps. My Credentials: 18 years of blues guitar and studying of the different styles.
I know all these guys you mentioned. There is much more out there waiting to be rediscovered. L.H. and skip James and blind Willie Johnson just happen to be among the many favorites besides Eddie Son House and R.J. this was how you played the guitar. The best in the world until the blues got electrified during the post war blues Era. I'm a howlin wolf guy myself. Humbert Sumlin was a fantastic guitar player.
@@alyahoodii Stevie does not rate here. Sorry. He might be the greatest guitar player, but not from the same mold as these guys. They all paved the way for SRV.
I owned records by all of them. I was lucky to make friends at 12 with a black kid named James Combs. His father was a big blues fan. He also had Bill Haley and the Comets. Just a great friend who’s family opened my eyes in the time of the Beatles to real American music. Lightning stood out to me from the first. He put it all together on a plate for everyone to enjoy
Everybody buzzin' about Albert, BB, Buddy, Muddy, Taj and John Lee but they done looked over this LEGEND and other more obscure acts like Beaumont Albino Johnny Winter, RL Burnside, etc...
Woah, go bring me my shotgun Oh I'm gonna start shootin' again Go bring me my shotgun You know I just got to start shootin' again You know I'm gonna shoot my woman Cause she's foolin' around with too many men Yes bring me my shotgun Yes man and a pocket full of shells Yes go bring me my shotgun Yes man and a pocket full of shells Yeah you know I'm gonna kill that woman I'm gonna throw her in that old deep dug well Hide her from everybody they won't know where she at That woman said Lightnin' you can't shoot me She said now you is dead of tryin' I don't take a day off for nobody She said Lightnin' you can't shoot me She said yes and you dare to try I said the only reason I don't shoot you little woman My double barrel shotgun, it just won't fire
Leigh Eifert there's plenty true bluesman walkin the streets pouring out there souls... they just ain't so much on RU-vid or gettin record deal brother
I feel both statements. There’s plenty of bluesmen. Real and true bluesmen. I’m sorry, in my opinion, this is one of the most influential people in music history... both directly and indirectly. He is my favorite.
As long as the human condition is still trapped under capitalism, there will always be bluesmen. They might not be singing the same blues you're thinking of, but it exists in all genres of music.
I think Keith Richards said it best, "it's simple ... No Lighnin' Hopkins (or maybe one of the other other greats like Muddy Waters), no Rolling Stones." (Please correct me if I have it wrong.)
