Palpatine in ROTJ was the biggest surprise. Until him, Vader was the only bad guy with a lightsaber, so when palpatine shoots lightning at Luke, you can tell he was on another power level.

I think it's stated somewhere that the reason that Palpatine hates the Jedi so much is because of how much they hold themselves back. Lightsabers are a symbol of the Jedi's restraint, so it makes sense that Palpatine would hate them.

I would love to see a Star Wars: What If, where an unknown character from an ancient breakaway sect of force users that have existed since Tython lands on Coruscant, engages Palpatine in public, forces him to reveal himself in a duel, defeats him, and then proceeds to humiliate him. Palpatine made the same mistake Vitiate made, he underestimate lightsaber, something even Kreia with her vast knowledge of the Dark Side didn't do.

Remember, his foresight was intact. He probably knew he had to allow that encounter or there was going to be an encounter and Skywalker would be there. The specifics are unimportant: we know he could have avoided that encounter but for some reason decided to fight with swords. Do this again with the Yoda fight and see how far this logic takes you.

My Sith in SWTOR (Darth Cuddlefluff) used his lightsaber almost exclusively as a tool and a defensive shield against energy attacks, more relying on the force. The model of lightsaber and color I chose made the energy field very visible to reflect this.

He understood the limitations of his personal abilities and adapted to his circumstances to achieve his goals, something other Sith would be too prideful and impatient. This will and patience earned him the galaxy after a lifetime of machinations, although his greed and cruelty also made it difficult for him to ultimately keep his empire intact. 5:28, And besides Force lightning, he presumably could have simply used telekinesis to attack the Jedi there to arrest him (or at least, indirectly attacking them by launching objects at them the way he did against Yoda), presumably including Windu (if we’re assuming Windu couldn’t negate and channel Palpatine’s power if used in that manner), as while Force-sensitive’s can counter each other’s telekinesis, some are more skilled at it than others and some are simply too strong for their opponents to counter. In that context, his loss to Windu comes off more as due to arrogance than inability, intentionally fighting at a disadvantage or in a manner that gave the advantage to his opponents (melee combat and negating Dark Side energy being Windu’s specialties) to demonstrate that he barely needed to try against these Jedi to be superior to them (which is reminiscent of a character like Frieza from Dragon Ball, who similarly gives himself disadvantages to prove he is superior to his opponents even with limitations imposed on him). In short, he felt like in direct conflict with other Force-sensitives, he could afford to not utilize his abilities to their fullest extent, that he could toy with his opponents, which is especially apparent in his fight against Savage and Maul, where he was given the opportunity to use his abilities freely and intentionally dragged out the fight until Maul made him struggle for a brief second and his temporary physical augmentations and limited stamina were finally starting to catch up to him, prompting him to just restrain and incapacitate Maul with his telekinesis as he could have done at any point.

The thing I find interesting is that the last 2 standard bearers of the the Jedi and Sith (Obi-Wan and Palpatine, Yoda was in seclusion at the end without a lightsaber) held that their lightsabers were to be symbols as opposed to be standard weapons.

As long back as I have cared to think about this issue it seemed to me that fear of the attraction of using the Force to do violence would be something Jedi would avoid assiduously and that the use of the lightsaber represented a chosen "best practice" even when not effective.

He sees the lightsaber the way Jedi see blasters. As weapons for chumps. He even told Vader that the Sith have moved beyond lightsabers, they just use it to mock Jedi.

I've always had a strong fondness for flashy/gaudy weapons (etching, plating, polishing, high quality bluing). But I'm not a war lord or thug. Palpatine doing it as an insult to people who supposedly have their emotions under check is great.

Funny note not at all related to Star Wars but the comment at the start about smoking sections on planes being in the back - the Philosopher Bertrand Russell survived a plane crash and attributed his survival to the fact he'd been in the rear smoking section. I think their is something to the target and mindset in war because I too miss my targets in PVP video game modes when in PVE Video game modes I don't... The only difference is another person behind the screen that person I don't want to kill.

Commenting on the “shooting at the enemy” comments… after WW2 Hollywood really upped the amount of shooting in movies (gangster movies and westerns). Some theorize that this was one strategy that was intended to “normalize” killing others. Like zombie movies and video games (not saying that these things cause people to kill). However, one could argue that it could, in part build a comfort in the idea of killing without consequence.

I wish the implications about Palpatine generally not using/needing a lightsaber, and only using one for manipulation (the Windu “duel”) or humiliation of others in combat, was also a part of Sith lore in general. Specifically, I like the idea of the Master preferring not to use a lightsaber, because corrupting and manipulating others, and corrupting and bending the force to their will, is their primary weapon.

Ironically, Palpatine still dies to a Lightsaber and not just once but twice.

They don't look any less practical than any other design we see, and he certainly doesn't seem to struggle to use them, they're just very fancy/expensive/pretty at the same time. Also, didn't he kill Plagius with lightning rather than lightsabre?

I would say it's not that the Sith are more powerful, just that the power is expressed differently.

that's incredibly short-sighted of him. lightsabers gives you another tool. also, there's instances where you can't use the Force. I'd use such a weapon. he should take a trip to Ziost.

I don't the Jedi juse use lightsabers because they are less effective weapons. The ability to block blaster shots is invaluable and beeing able cut just about anything can be a huge help in a disaster situation, just overall a great aid for a peacekeeper in a very small device. For the Sith its likely the case that the best counter to a lightsaver is another lightsaber, any situation where a blaster would have been better can just be resolved by the force and the defensive benefits for self preservation don't hurt either.

I dont know if I would use dave grossman as a source, his teachings are kind of iffy. He's known as sort of a tryhard, preaches military thought and thinking but his is utterly uncredible. He's the kind of guy who peddles this sort of "alpha male" military commando man psychology based entirely off of bad sources and/or stuff he just made up

It was my thought that Palpatine used his lightsaber against the Jedi to stall them until Anakin arrived. He was able to mow down 3 before locking down Mace. There was even a part that all he had to do to kill Mace was a thrust, the blade would have gone straight though. And I agree that he felt Anakin land and thus threw the end of the fight.

Nothing says Jedi Arrogance like working for decades in the same room as The Dark Lord of the Sith and not noticing.

If you have use the force to wield a lightsaber then we have a problem, because in the OT Han solo operates a lightsaber no problem on hoth while luke was unconscious to stuff luke in a tantan. Also as much as i hate the sequels, Fin uses a lightsaber. On top of that i believe theres old novels of people using lightsabers after the Jedi and sith are gone more or less and normal people find jedi relics.

There isnt anything wrong with Lightsabers but many Jedi seemed to over rely on them instead of improving their force skills. For example it was possible to use the force to increase your speed and strength but few did so enough to compete at the level of Yoda and Palpatine. Also with the energy absorbtion ability Tutminus they could withstand and redirect force lightning and blaster bolts with their bare hands. Satele Shan is famous for withstanding a Lightsaber thrust with her bare hands too. I understand that different medichlorian counts and personal skill levels play some factor but with all the training Jedi went thru they didnt seem to learn much of the important techniques which would make them nearly invinicble against non force users and allow them to compete evenly with the Sith in speed, strength and techniques.

Consider that control is a form of power. Sure, raw unchecked power in a pure form may be what Palps wanted... But even more dangerous would have been a willingness to understand and harness control over that raw power. Think how dangerous various Force powers are if they became more focused and precise in their application. Instead of a Push or Crush, a concentrated blow to the head like a sledgehammer or even a needle jabbing and piercing through objects. Seizing an opponent's heart or pinching of blood flow to their brain. An flow of plasma that is a straight lance of energy instead an arc of lightning. A sound that deafens and causes vertigo to a single victim discreetly and insidiously... Etc etc

The Sith may be more powerful, but they're weaker overall. This makes them a match for the Jedi, who are stronger, but less powerful. Mace is so strong because he has enough darkness in him to make him powerful, but has the light side strength to control it. I doubt either he or Palpatine even know whether or not he defeated Palpatine. The only reason he doesn't survive the fight is Anakin. Without that intervention I think the fight would have lasted a LOT longer, with a possible draw. A glass cannon is useful if it has enough power to one shot its target, but, at best, cracks more and more with each shot. Whereas a gun has a lot less power, but is designed with the strength to take many shots.
