The Most Beautiful Towns to Visit in Liguria, Italy | Santa Margherita Ligure
If you travel to Liguria, Italy, you should visit Santa Margherita Ligure on the Italian Riviera, a former fishing-village turned into a charming seaside resort on the shores of the Ligurian Sea in north-west Italy. The beautiful town, located about 35 kilometers southeast of Genoa is very well placed to explore local highlights such as Portofino, Rapallo or Camogli. Santa Margherita Ligure is surrounded by hills covered with pine trees, chestnut trees and olive groves. The seafront with its beach, the lively harbour and a perfect seaside promenade are the main attraction at Santa Margherita Ligure. Right in the centre of the town, there are two extensive areas of beach. A walk along the promenade of Santa Margherita Ligure will be refreshing, enjoying the sea breeze and a very picturesque view with palm trees and brightly coloured buildings just behind the seafront. The harbour is in the centre of the town and welcomes pleasure boats, fishing boats and big boats for sea trips. The town is well placed for exploring the eastern Liguria coast by train, by bus or by boat. Although the sea and beach are the main attractions, there are also some monuments to see, the castle and a few beautiful churches. In Piazza Martiri della Libertà, in the middle of a circular fountain, there is a marble monument made in1892, dedicated to Christopher Columbus who was born in Genoa in 1451. The famous Genoese explorer is depicted with his right arm raised and his gaze extended forward in search of new worlds. The statue dedicated to the King Vittorio Emanuele II, located near the statue of Christopher Columbus was made in 1894. On Molo Malocello there is a statue of Santa Margherita Virgin and Martyr, the Patron of the City, celebrated on the 20th of July. The small Castle was built on the waterfront by Antonio de Càrabo in 1550 to defend the town against the frequent incursions of Saracen pirates.
