Awesome piece. Regarding the Tuna... The quartz movement in a Tuna is not just any quartz movement though, it is a high torque, high end professional tool diver movement designed and exclusive to the Tuna because saturation divers wanted the reliability of a quartz movement. That is the heritage I think about when I wear my quartz Tuna.
You said it first not all quartz movements are created equal the 7c46 is a jeweled all metal serviceable movement most are just throw aways . I’m pretty sure he never had to deal with even changing a battery in one which isn’t that big of a deal I’ve had my 031 for 7 ish years now and still haven’t had to change the battery
@@mbaulfinger Hope you manage to get one. The Darth Tuna was my grail for years. Managed to get one at the start of this year and it’s probably my favourite watch still.
Quartz Tuna's are awesome. I sold my first one couple of months ago and immediately regret it. Recently I got another one and love it. It is a must have in any Seiko collection.
@@mbaulfinger it will not disappoint although the new version has sapphire it is flat and they have removed marinemaster from the dial and replaced it with the prospex logo although the older version is hardlex that was done on purpose because it can’t shatter like sapphire but it is domed And when the lume is fully charged it gives the illusion of a lumed chapter ring the newer version doesn’t have that effect. Either way you can’t see how well made there upper tier watches are until you get them in hand they are beautiful for the money
I gotta say that you talking to yourself and commenting on your thoughts in your videos is the high point for me. It makes me laugh and mirrors what I do as well.
Love it McMahon, and great to see you so happy with it. Much more individual design than the Tudor in my opinion. Good choice. 👍Although I disagree with your Sumo comment, bracelet aside !
It's a fantastic watch, though I would have to travel into the Heart of Darkness to buy one! You might not use the datè window, but the 4.30 position here is spot on. I bought a...hem-hem...homage to this piece recently (NH35, runs at -4 s/d), and the only gripe I could have is the white 3 o'clock date window. Wear your Uemara in good health. Hope you treat yourself well for your upcoming 60th! 🍻
I do really like that Willard. I was surprised by -8 sec at that price. My green willard 42 does about -17sec day. I would hope 2.5x price would be 2.5x the accuracy. I do love the build and design of the 44 willard. Would wear. As for the tuna....I originally got into watches when I saw a c. 2000 Tuna somewhere and couldn't get it out of my head. I have the sapphire sbbon045 now on a superengineer and holy crap. I love it. An absolute unit. Don't mind the ticking. Love the precision. The sbbn045 gains about .5sec per week.
I may have been too harsh in my assessment of the accuracy. Twenty-four hours later, the 44 Willard is accurate to the minute, so I'd say just a few seconds off.
My SMP 2531 just turned 16 years old 2 months ago . Still running great, +5, + 8 sec/ day, still no service done at this point. I'm 53 years old at the moment, so maybe when I turn 60 I will have it serviced 😁
Absolutely love ur videos I hav the mm300 and it wears really well on my smaller wrist I also hav 5 other Seiko s and all r perfectly aligned I must b lucky and love them it seems a shame that a lot of people get bad ones will u get anymore Seiko s Jeff
Yeah I've seen this in the metal. It's definitely great watch. It is about 3rd on my list. For me, I can't seem to reconcile having two willards in my collection so I'd have to flip my 42mm or just give it away.
It may be minor but I like to feel the love everytime I look at my wrist, this date window at 4:00 crushes that love. It just looks like an after thought at 4:00. 3:00 or 6:00 works for be.
Hi Jeff, have you tried a mini turtle and can you compare in terms of size and how it wears to this. I think they both look good even though at very different price points.
I do LOVE my quartz watches. Something about the insane accuracy and the heritage of it now. My Seiko quartz turtle, which apparently in its age has become vintage at 20 years old, is the watch I have the most emotion attached to. So I don't understand the wall clock thing. Sell me your Tuna
Do you wear a mechanical watch during training? Gym, off road cycling, hiking, camping , weight lifting and working on my classic car I like to wear a tough quartz watch.
If you're only going to wear 1 watch, the SLA051 b/c it's more comfortable, but if you don't mind its thickness and love the superior lume, can wear a blue-dial watch every day, and prefer its more aggressive design, get the SLA023.
@@JeffreyMcMahon thank you, I was inclining towards the SLA051 because I already have a big chunky watch (a Tuna). But I saw the SLA023 on your wrist on your latest video couple of minutes ago and it looks so good!
Crazy hearing you say your done with the tuna as someone who’s watched your channel from the beginning that is the 1 watch I will forever associate with you. Even if you don’t own one anymore for me that will always be your signature watch your the reason I bought my first years ago. Like someone else mentioned the 7c46 isn’t your run of the mill throwaway quartz its a fully metallic jeweled serviceable high torque movement to move those big hands. Thinking about its original design purpose as a tool watch it makes sense to use a quartz watch when your putting your life in its hands it’s purposeful just like the hardlex, the shroud, and the use of lacquered steel bezels instead of ceramic. I’ve said it before but if your done with Seiko quartz I think an 8L35 Tuna would make one hell of a 3 watch collection that’s the 3 models every seiko diver has been predicated upon they are the pillars. With the lightweight titanium they are actually pretty easy to wear my 300m tuna is probably heavier. You do it anyway but the only downside is you would have to get an aftermarket bracelet food for thought!
I have the 42 Willard and it’s gaining approximately a 1 minute a day. Would that be considered acceptable? I had an srpe93 turtle for a short period of time and it keep much better time.
@@JeffreyMcMahon okay. Do a video on your current collection and how much money you have in it and your thoughts on the amount you’ve spent so far? Will you spend more or have you hit your threshold etc
A simple regulation, you can do or your local watch repair with a Timegrapher can do in literally, 2 minutes. You'll be at really whatever you want, +1 +2 +3 seconds per day. If you do it yourself just make sure you don't scratch the back, which isn't a huge deal as no one will ever see it anyway.
Nice watch, I can't do seiko automatics just not reliable, granted I sling chains and binders everyday, so quartz solar or not is for me. My current beater snj025 greeeeeat. My weekend is my Tuna. Set it and forget it...
I wish Seiko would do an 8L35 diver that was 40mm. Seems like all the higher end 8L35 and Spring drive divers (LX, GS etc) are 44+mm. That said I’d still probably rather put the money towards an Oris Aquis or BB58 both of which come in sub 40mm sizes. My last 3 Seikos all have some kind of alignment issues and there prices only seem to go up with no improvement to QC.
@@elefantrising Seiko’s specifications on a MM300: 15.4mm thickness, 44.3mm case diameter and 50.5mm lug to lug length. An SKX007 for comparison is 13.5mm thick, 42.5mm wide and 46mm lug to lug. The MM300 is way too top heavy and clunky to be a comfortable wear. It’s way too big for my small wrist.
Just purchased a sla 043 , that's the 3rd reissue of the 62mas. It's a stunning watch and has the 8L35 movement. Got it on eBay at an amazing price . Just over half original price, and the watch was new in June 21. Although the lugs are 19mm , I've put 20mm straps on it no problem. Obviously it doesn't come with a bracelet, but this model has seikos new ever bright steel so would be hard to find a match.its the most expensive watch I've ever purchased, but it's so gorgeous. The sla models are expensive, but they show that seiko can make watches every bit as good as their Swiss rivals. This model is half the price of a rolex sub, but just as good quality wise, and being limited to 1700 pieces worldwide, a lot more exclusive. Its mad that people will happily pay 4k for a tudor , but won't for a superior seiko at the same price point. I think seiko has started to flex it's muscle against the Swiss, by making more expensive watches, to compete more on the luxury market. Nobody wants cheap watches anymore , they are items of jewellery now . We all want better it's a natural progression, and are happy to pay for a quality product. Seiko at their best are mesmerising, so their Swiss rivals will need to step up too , if they want to stay in the game long term.
@@JeffreyMcMahon thanks Jeff I will. It's quite a small watch at 40mm , but it's a keeper for sure. But it was about $600 cheaper than other ones on eBay, so I got a real bargain, price wise. And it's still got 18months warranty left on it !!!
Nice piece, McMahon. However, now that your most recent Seiko fiasco has left a bad taste, maybe it's time to give the Swiss another chance? I could definitely see you becoming a DOXA guy considering their history, iconic design, size and serviceability. And your 60th will surely serve as a sufficient excuse for another watch purchase!
I just passed on a blue one. It had terrible picture on ebay. I tried to contact to seller to see what the catch was. It sold for $1300.00 There had to be something wrong with it, too good to be true.
I find regulating NH-35/36 movements can get you 0-2 sec per day. I also feel that if you really need to service your Seiko, just buy a new movement and replace it yourself.
Hello and thank you for the video Have you ever been in soviet hospital? New Jersey Seiko ask me 150 dollars only to ship my 4s36 Seiko to Japan for service
Will someone buy this man an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean? If I was ever to win the lottery Jeff I'd have to get you one or maybe a Rolex Deep Sea James Cameron. Could you ever imagine the look on your face if both came to you via the mail?
My beloved 051 has gone ballistic and isn't running properly. I'm currently in Spain on holiday and it let me down 2 days in. Considering it's only 3 and a half years old , I think the 6r15 movement is poor. I was considering a sla 043, but I ain't wasting my money on any more seikos. My rado is over 10 years old and never misses a beat , and I haven't serviced it yet. My skx, just broke down after 2 years of owning it too. I love seikos watches but their movements are not reliable. Ok my skx only cost £120 , but my 051 is a 1k watch new, and under 4 years old it goes tits up for no good reason. So there is no way I will buy a high end seiko now. I just can't trust them. I friend just bought an invicta and it only cost £60 new and it's running more accurate than a 1k seiko ??? My seiko will probably cost over £100 to get fixed and how long will it be , before it goes haywire again ? I'm done with buying seikos now.
I have SKX007,009, SBDC051and SLA021! None of them have any issues! Running as strong from day 1 ! The SKXs are over 5 years old 051 is 4 years old and SLA021 almost 3 all running smoothly! Probably you just had a bad luck ! I won’t be buying Seiko as well if’s happening to me. Totally understand
@@JB-qt8eh no I paid under £700 nearly new, but were 1k new in UK at that time. I actually think they are worth the asking price , as say an oris 65 is nearly 2k new on a bracelet for comparison in the UK. If you managed to get an 053 for $450 new 3 years ago , you were very lucky indeed. The cheapest I've seen them new now, are still £850 4 years after they come out in the UK.
@@darkcggaming yeah that’s true, probably been buying cheap prospex with 4r or 6r movement so once Seiko gets to higher price brackets! They will start screaming and complaining 🤣
