Russell Westbrook is an electric, super athletic & freakish NBA point guard for the Wizards... Used to play for Houston, originally drafted by the Oklahoma Thunder. He is crazy talented and has an aggressive style of play (likes to slash to the rim, dunks really hard) that’s unmatched by ANY player in the league currently of the last 10 years. Yes, you guys figured it out this song is about Lil Dicky talking about his career prior to rap, he said in numerous interviews that he tried to be a comic but didn’t really succeed at it but for his whole life even as a child he wanted to be famous and knew he could make people laugh. He even expected to take a normal job after college too instead of becoming a rapper but he wanted to give rap a try because he was confident in himself. So this is him thinking of “If Russell Westbrook grew up on a farm and could never realize his true potential”. I think it really says something about his sense of self-determination and drive and I think that’s where LD is comparing himself to Westbrook the most, although Lil Dicky can play basketball quite well... Another song you should react to is “Truman” by Lil Dicky kind of touches on the same idea of what it’s like right before someone discovers fame. Thanks for the reactions... Shoutout to my man who always has his NY Giants hat on!

The song is about how even if you think your life is going to turn out one way it probably won't. He uses Westbrook growing up on a farm and finding basketball as an analogy for how Lil Dicky always thought he was going to be a comedian but actually ended up blowing up from rapping. Sort of a message to not give up even if your initial dream doesn't work out because you may find something you never thought about that you're actually amazing at.

Hey first video I watched on your channel and I can honestly say I enjoyed the reaction and I want to elaborate more on the point of the analogy that he made Russell Westbrook is known as a world-class athlete what his analogy was that what if he was born into a quiet life never really even thought about basketball his family was a farming family and he planned out his life by those standards acquired some land start his own farm and was basically going through the motions and doing what he was good at and then one day instead of taking his normal route to get to where he was going to take the long way around just to explore a little bit and he happened upon a basketball court and after a couple shots he finally made one and he realize that he enjoyed it I enjoyed playing the game of basketball and at that point he treated it as somewhat of a hobby just something to do when he was done with his farming and chores but as time went on he got better and better at sport and he began to attract attention for it and he was offered an opportunity to play more public games and even you are an opportunity to play in the NBA because of his talent even though a lot of people looked at his background and didn’t really think he has the making of the beauty of this analogy was that before he decided to wrap it wasn’t necessarily because he was doing Camry he was actually working an office job in marketing I believe and he got an interest in music and after pursuing the address a little bit more he decided to abandon his previous path in business and decided to pursue his rap career and at the end when he says who’s taking care of the farm he’s actually thinking back to that old idea of his life and thinking what if Basketball = Rap Farming = The 6 figure office job he was going through the motions with

His talking of “the comedy thing” wasn’t him talking about doing funny rap, he was literally wanting to be a comedian/comedic actor so that’s why he started writing the funny raps hoping he’d get enough attention from tv execs like a Will Smith ala Fresh Prince situation. Ended up loving it, getting really good and wanting to push himself in the rap game

The farm was his job after college and having a nice easy set life. In the face of that he found basketball (rap) and chose to leave his easy and nice life behind to pursue something he just found he happens to be ridiculously good at.

This is by far my favorite Lil Dicky song, and I am so upset with the youtube algorithm that it NEVER showed me that you guys reacted to this. If I could provide a breakdown to this song, it would really cement just how amazing the story that he tells is. Lil Dicky, Dave Burd, grew up in an upper middle class family in a suburb just outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Throughout his younger life he did very well in school, and was widely regarded as the class clown. He was renowned for being the funny guy while also being one of the top of his class for academics. He aspired to be in the spotlight as some point in his life for his comedic prowess, and decided to continue his education after primary school in search of it. After graduating from the University of Richmond, he scored a job with an advertising agency where he was earning a 6 figure salary. During Dave's employment at the agency, he was involved with quite a few advertisement runs, the most notable being the 2012 NBA "Big Things Are Coming" commercials. -- In the song, he states that his theoretical Russel Westbrook grew up on a farm. Russel lived a good life with loving family and friends, and was renowned amongst them for being a stand out person, and with this base he was on track to essentially follow in his parents' footsteps of building a family and making an honest living. "Just imagine for a second what if Russell Westbrook never knew his own mentality Grew up on a farm where the biggest commonality Was people that conform to the ruralest localities To Russell though it was nuffin' but normality And he really nice up on the plow in actuality Everybody liked the kid and dug his personality And so da mutuality was somewhat rationality So then ya man made a plan of practicality Not even a plan, it was more of a formality Get a little land and attend to its vitality Then raise a little fam 'til it all became finality The strategy was just to stay in the course And do ya chores, when ya' happy ya' ain't need to abort " -- Russel was happy with this life, as he was doing very well for himself. Throughout his employment he began exploring new ways to further himself in the company, including one instance that Dave has recalled in an interview or two where he gave a pitch to his executives in the form of a song. He wrote and performed a rap to the board to portray his idea, and they really liked it, and Dave LOVED making it. The positive reaction to this method led Dave to think bigger about what else he could do with that mindset. Eventually, he asked his parents for access to his Bar Mitzvah money, and he used all of his free time outside of work to write a few songs, and shoot 3 music videos. Upon releasing these videos, the first two barely gained any traction, and kind of left a sour taste in his mouth about the whole thing. But then Dave released his song "Ex Boyfriend." Someone posted it to reddit, and within 24 hours it had WELL over 1M views on youtube. He was hooked. -- Russel stuck to his way of life, doing well for himself and not going outside the norm, except for the few times he just got out and went to explore beyond the lifestyle that he had worked in for himself. "Never explored nothing less he rollin' round on his horse Then one day he was up on his horse That’s when he went past the porch, the path he normally Passes forth was fast and short, was after more Went faster north, amassed a lure to master more And then discovered the court. He like ya! Let me down Tim Hopped off, lookin' puzzled at the round rim Saw a ball up in the corner on the ground then Russell started dribbling and giggling astounded Then he shot a brick and then a brick and then he downed it And when he hit it Russell listened to the fuckin' sound friction Up in a swish make and he was confounded Because he knew that he had found him But right now; it was still for the fun Just a way to kill the time when the farming was done" -- Russel took his first shots, and after missing 2, he sank the third hitting nothing but net. He knew in that very moment that this is what he really wanted to do. Dave had some money saved up to live off of, but he knew that if he really wanted to pursue a wild secondary track for his life, he would have to put everything into it. By the end of the week that he had released "Ex Boyfriend," he had officially quit his job at the agency. He locked himself away for months just writing and practicing, honing his skills and technique. Eventually, Dave put out a kickstarter campaign to raise money with the intention of raising a couple thousand dollars to make another video or two, but he ended up raising $113,000. This caught the attention of some big names in the music industry, as a fan response to a brand new artist like this was all but unheard of, especially with the background of his own. Coming from an upper middle class Jewish family, and pursuing a career in hiphop made many established artists question his authenticity. -- Russel's interest in the court took his attention in full, and he kept practicing until he started to get really good. "Then the walking turned to running, and the hoppin' turned to jumping And dunking, and Russell had to keep coming Because the young’n was fucking disgusting and loving it Running it, all of a sudden the public started to come in abundance and fuck wit him 'Cause he was butter and hungry, hung jury 'Cause stories of glory, not normally for people like him Then the word got around up to ESPN And they flying Russell down to compete in the gym Bunch a grown men lookin' to belittle the kid Because to those men, ball was the reason to live And the G.O.A.T.S. they been all in since they was kids So this goat owning mafucka look like a dick" -- A farm boy being scouted for the big leagues over some hype that was brewing in the media didn't sit well at all with the guys who had devoted years of blood, sweat, and tears trying to accomplish their lifelong goal of making it big. Dave got to work in creating his first full length work, and devoted near 100% of his time and money into doing so. On May 22, 2013, he released his debut mixtape "So Hard" with the money he had raised from his kickstarter. It was an instant success online, and was met with widespread praise from fans online. It received a 94% approval rating, and laid the groundwork for his eventual stardom we see today. Record labels began reaching out to him, and after some bartering and debate, he decided to sign with CMSN. They offered him funding for future projects, and all the freedom he could need to pursue his dreams. He had fully cemented himself in his new career path, but despite the praise and success, he still thinks back to what could have been had he stayed with on his initial course that he had worked for years to achieve. -- Russell knew better than anyone what his hard work had been leading to, and had full confidence in himself to prove his point to all of his critics. "And even know Russell knows that, he doesn’t submit He just chills with a grin And then the game start, and this muthafucka take charge Make it rain, hard D up on these bitches making children of men Lookin' better than his predecessors ever could get Turned the animosity to respect And then the Thunder called him Said they heard a lot about the ballin' Told him that they wanna get involved and Showed him all the shit that you can get up in the league, it’s so appalling Oklahoma City in the autumn, hella pretty Awesome, errbody laud him Erry-bitty lookin' like they really fucking fallin' Condominium is so legitimate it’s sprawling And this muthafucka on the court straight ballin' Cash all up in that ass, lol’ing at the past like Where the fuck would I be at up on the other path, right? If I never stumbled 'pon the game then think of that life Shit, who taking care of my farm? Who taking care of my farm? Who taking care of my farm? I really loved that farm" -- Russell is now a baller.

Nobody is ever going to read this in it's entirety, and I accept that. I have the utmost respect for this man and what he's accomplished, and I believe that his story deserves to be known more than just a "funny rapper that made it big." He is an artistic GENIUS and I am certain he will go down as one of the greatest to ever do it. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Yeah so I'm pretty sure this song is a metaphor for going along on a career path or a life path that you originally thought you would be on and then completely diverging from that just like Lil Dicky went to college and got his degree for something completely different and then he ended up rapping in the farm is a metaphor for his former career path and maybe how was life could have ended up

I believe a big part of the analogy is how dicky started as a comedian, never considered rap, and then when he started rapping he realized he had the skill to become one of the best. But at the end, he realizes he still likes/misses comedy. Also you should react to Bruh, one of his most impressive songs!

You sort of missed the analogy. The comparison was that you might find greatness in things you would have never dreamed of doing. As LD said he wanted to be a comedian and never thought of being a rapper. When he tried it he found he was amazing at it. So the Russel comparison was that he stumbled upon the basket ball court one day and he found out he was amazing at it. Where as he could of just spent his life on a farm instead. Its going off the beaten path so to speak. You can do what you're currently doing or try new things and you may find that you excel in them which leads to bigger and better things. I wouldn't call it destiny or reaching the top in whatever you're doing. It's more so that you can accidently find greatness.
