This is the album "Nuit Parisienne" (Period PST-2), an early stereo reel-to-reel tape featuring the French "chanteuse," Lili France.
Not much information appears to be out there regarding this album. The accompaniment is provided by Bela Babai & his orchestra, a Romani musician that produced many albums of his native Romani music (then called "gypsy" music) throughout the 1950's. It is noted that Bela Babai and Lili France were both working in New York at the time of this release so it is extremely likely that it was recorded in New York. It also appears that the LP release, while only available in mono, is longer and features a few songs that this reel-to-reel release is missing. On the other hand, the songs that are present on this reel-to-reel release are featured in extremely high fidelity.
Please enjoy this fun early stereo recording!

There’s a clarity to her voice that feels unreal for something from 1956

In the advent of two-channel "stereophonic" recordings, they were never really intended to be heard as what we call true "stereo" today. The recorders only had two tracks, LEFT and RIGHT. Two-channels was plainly viewed as a convenience: orchestra/band in one channel, and voice (or solo instrument) in the other channel. That way the volume of the voice and orchestra could be fine-tuned and then summed to mono in order to provide the most convincing recording possible at the time. Also in those days, there was no real theory of a "center" channel--the idea hadn't been properly conceptualized yet. Yes, 3-track tape recorders were also invented around the same time, allowing a "LEFT" a "CENTER" and a "RIGHT" position. But again, 90% of people were listening in MONO, and not STEREO. So virtually all mixing/engineering decisions were still being based on MONO theory. Multiple channels were incepted as a CONVENIENCE, not a true "listening mode." So in reality, what we're hearing on this recording is essentially a rudimentary "pre-MONO" mix what was most likely never meant for the "average listener" to hear. "STEREOPHONIC SOUND" was initially really only a sales gimmick or a technological demonstration at technology conferences. It was never really thought of as "The PREMIERE Way" to listen to recorded music.

I really can't escape Kylie Minogue's Padam Padam.

Very nice quality, though I think the mix must be defective because I don't think they intended the voice to come out of the right. Sometimes it happened, like in some Nat King Cole early stereo recordings

It can not be understated how popular "ping pong" stereo was back in the 1950's and early 1960's. It was all about the "wow" factor. The same thing happened when quadraphonic happened in the 1970's. You haven't lived until you hear a quad mix with the bass in the rear channels or an instrument placed along a diagonal plane!

@@ReelyInterestingThat kind of stereo panning is also very prominent in The Beatles' early stereo records.
