the video skips put this in an untentional sort of analogue horror sort of vibe. unsettling where moments of the footage just jump forward. i keep expecting a jump scare of some sort.
The synth, piano and vocals remind me a lot of Strawberry Switchblade. They seemed to be pretty popular in Japan in the 80s since i’ve seen recordings of interviews in Japan as well as appearing on Japanese television.
This sounds quite good for 1959, but what is reely amazing is no print-through on such an old tape! At least I couldn't hear any with my tablet's speakers, I'll rewatch this later with headphones.
They should have abstained from scenes like 4:20 - this is just a mess. Old low-resolution formats, in particular with low color resolution, just don't work for scenes like this. The deinterlacer cannot make up its mind at 16:00. The picture overall is soft and low res.
16:00 has the type of interlace twitter that happens when time stretching a video slightly. I'm guessing it was stretched an odd, small percentage (like - 5-10%) for the effect or to meet the director's length for the scene. Also, a friendly reminder to all that 480i content is generally best viewed with your head placed back 7x to 9x the height of the picture. For example, if you have a 19" 16x9 monitor (approx. 9" height), you should have your head at least 5 feet away from the screen for the best perceived visual quality.
