She was a victim of molestation when she was 8 years old. She had a nagging stage mom and her first love died suddenly. Used by managers and promoters, she descended into serious alcoholism, married a creep who abused her and stole all her money and then went public with her alcoholism, married her AA sponsor and HE left her and took all the cash she had left.

When Lillian Roth heard she was going to be in a Marx Brothers movie, she burst into tears. But I'm glad she wound up here, she was so adorable. Just like she was in The Love Parade and Madam Satan.

Lillian Roth did enjoy great success. Starting at age 7. She was a Broadway star and then under contract for years with a Hollywood studio. She had 6 short-lived marriages that took a toll on her career wise and financially. After dropping out in the 30s, her alcoholism grew worse but she not only survived that she had a religious conversion and was starting back on Broadway in 1962 for almost a year run in 'I Can Get It For You Wholesale'. She later toured in Funny Girl. She did some films and Broadway during 70s. Dying in 1980 at 69. She had a varied life but her career was successful. Less talented performers did not overshadow her. Disease and bad decisions side-tracked her but she made an amazing comeback in her later years. I think she was ultimately a success story.

Every clip I see of her, I wish there were more. She could sell the song with her expressive face and singing. She was very cute & appealing on film. It's a shame her illness caused her to drop out in her prime. I wish I could have seen her great and successful return on Broadway, I Can Get It For You Wholesale, over 300 performances ( Striesands debut) with Elliot Gould. Wonder if there's clips of that or a cast recording on RU-vid?

Groucho called this guy "strictly no talent". I forget his quote about Lillian but I think it was nicer.
@Ryan-on5on
@Ryan-on5on 3 года назад
Four years late, but are you sure he wasn't referring to Oscar Shaw in "The Cocoanuts," because by all accounts he was just as disparaging of Shaw's acting/singing chops as you claim he was of poor Hal Thompson in this "picture" (as ole timers like Groucho once called it).
@KidMillions
@KidMillions 3 года назад
@@Ryan-on5on I think it's in The Groucho Phile book, I'd have to check it again... He wasn't disparaging of Marilyn Monroe or Maureen O'Sullivan (he gave her lots of attention) but characters like Hal Thompson were expendable.
@gregorypalmer5403
@gregorypalmer5403 2 года назад
@@KidMillions Hal Thompson was more of a singer than actor but part of the woodenness here , both of em, is that the movies were just climbing out of the silent era and so there often were vestiges of the pantomimey stuff in the early talkie musicals. As usual Groucho was being a jerk. At least , a noodge. .
@premanadi

@@gregorypalmer5403 And yet Lillian Roth is totally delightful and not wooden at all.
@steve2474
@steve2474 Год назад
I don't know why he would say that (if he did) about Hal Thompson. His singing of this one short verse was just fine. In terms of acting, the role of Johnny Parker was a minor character, so the writers didn't really do much in the way of character development. Add to that, it was 1930, which meant that sound movies was still in its infancy, and the actors still had to remain pretty stationary.
