Can we give some attention to the fact that David is 100% incredibly supportive and dedicated to Lilo and Nani throughout literally every step of this particular franchise? He doesn't need to date Nani in order to do it, sure he asks, but its the fact he gets past those rejection attempts and makes himself available to this crazy found-family that really makes him one of the most underrated side characters in Disney.

Honestly it /highly depends/ on the state and a lot of the time the help is just enough but not enough at all. She probably should've accepted more of David's help though I can see why she would not being in similar situations myself. America's society equates a lack of independence to weakness and anyone who's struggling feels that acutely. It doesn't matter if no one around you says it the media implies enough and anyways, there are bound to be /several/ people (usually older) who will very passive aggressively look down on you for even needing help. Granted this is from a White perspective and Nani is Polynesian so I can't speak from that social focal point but the overarching social ideal of 'if you need you are weak and deserve what you get' is enough to be crushing all on it's own without adding America's lovely racism to it. And I hear the foster care system is trash and would rip Lilo to shreds.

Yes the foster care system is fucking trash and Lilo will not survive. You roll the dice on if you get a nice family or the worst family. Far too many kids end up in bad homes or never find anywhere to live and bounce around homes until they are 18

Being someone who has a similar age difference to my younger sisters as Nani does to Lilo, I do really get her. You have to try and act like the responsible adult, and you almost feel like Mom#2, yet at the same time kids can be little shits and siblings get on your nerves, yet there's this overwhelming love as if they were your own. The scene where Nani breaks down, from pleading to anger to sobbing, in front of Jumba and Pleakly after Lilo is abducted makes me shed a tear every time with the terror and empathy of knowing I would react the same way.

Eh, I agree that Nani is not the best guardian. She is 19 and clearly overwhelmed by the responsibilities of being a full time guardian. However, Lilo would be thrown into the foster care system. Especially since Lilo is poc and lives in Hawaii. Nani would be given a couple of years to clean up her act while lilo either lived with another family or lived in a home. The most she would get in that time period is vistitation, and thats a maybe. However, the foster care enviroment is so terrible and clogged in america that lilo would in all honesty be serverly broken down.

Alright I need to point out though Lilo clearly on her way to "broken down" as is, she assaulted the red head for being mildly mean, takes creepy photos of people without there permission, and tried to voodoo-punish her friends. It very well be that taking the unfair odds of foster care would in fact be better. Like I don't know much about foster care and this is a cartoon so whatever but still.

@@nahte123456 The American foster care system is literally a life or death sort of gamble a lot of times (This is coming from an adopted child whose first "Family" beat him at 3 and a half). Too many children, not enough care workers to keep track of and check up on them, too little in the way of background checks and other resources, equates to a HUGE population of foster children who have been abused.

No no you're absolutely right, Nani did need help, but that needed to come in a way that Lilo could stay with her. Lilo's a weird and now traumatized kid who Nani understands better than the 100 different foster families (probably off island) she'd get passed around to when "yeah f this I can't care for this one" inevitably keeps happening.

So American here who wanted to be a social worker The main goal is to keep the child with blood, espacily indigenous people. However, it dosnt always work out like that. Especially for indigenous people. Ideal situation, Nani has five years to get her stuff in order and reapply to custody. Worst situation, she might get to visit.

This movie was always my mother’s favorite but I never figured out why until now. Single mom who had me when she was 18. Sister-like relationship. Crazy borderline-worrisome family situation where we pretty much supported each other while also driving each other batshit crazy. ... Heck.

4:30 In the TV series Pleakly (how is it written?) would often chose to wear dresses, wigs and make-up. It was never weird to me because I grew up on the show but now after all those years I see it in a new light...

@Grace Diseker Sometimes the best representation of these concepts in children's media is just to do them and don't say anything about it. We also grew up with Jesse and James from Pokemon regularly crossdressing for disguises and it was never something that was brought up as being weird or different. For those involved with the LGBTQ+ community and knowing the possible implications behind crossdressing, it's a nice touch to let us infer things about the character, but for cishets it's just a good way to normalise stuff like this

At the risk of getting semi-off-topic, I think the Lilo and Stitch franchise is the best example of why Cerebus Syndrome is better off done the other way around. It’s just nice that this movie was followed up by a lighthearted series about finding places for the other 625 experiments to belong and be happy like Stitch is with Lilo and Nani.

I remember when the movie was originally gonna involved mroe of the colonizers and tourists aspect and how the natives felt. Kinda like a call out. We saw this in the “it’s not even a luao” scene.

I actually did a research presentation about the representation of Indigenous culture and the impacts of colonization and cultural tourism in this movie in my Indigenous Studies class last year! There are a ton of examples in the movie, some subtle (like the books in Lilo's room being about learning how to do appropriated traditions, like fire swallowing) and some more blatant (the luau scene, as well as the fact that Lilo is obsessed with photographing fat white tourists as trophies, much the same way tourists photograph Natives). The movie is filled to the brim with criticism of the tourism industry, without being blatantly political. It's a good way to let people be subtly informed about these issues, since a lot of white people don't like to listen if they feel something is being labeled as politics. I miss when Disney did that, instead of whatever the hell woke neoliberalism they're shoving in their remakes. (I actually might still have the slides for the presentation if you're interested lol)

i saw this on Tumblr recently; looked it up and it was confirmed, Lilo's parents died in a car accident during a bad storm, and she believes feeding Pudge would prevent it from happening to herself or Nani or whoever else. So when she said "Pudge controls the weather", the Adults knew what she was talking about

honestly I've had this opinion on Lilo and Nani situation for a long time. It's less that Nani doesn't deserve to take care of Lilo it's more she literally cannot be everywhere at once and she just won't admit that. sil I almost don't see that as a problem with the film I see that as a very subtle lesson to be learned that's just sort of on top of everything else.

This was my favourite Disney movie as a kid, I just love sci-fy and cute monsters with personality, although with your explaination on the social services and Nani I feel a little bitter sweet, I still love this movie though "He's looking for something to break, eat, snort or any combination of the three" is definitely my favourite line based on accuracy

A lot of people will critisize Nani thinking she's not a fit guardian. And unless you've been in that kind of situation, you can only see from the outside. Nani wasn't suppose to be a guardian, shes 19 , while most argue that legally she's an adult, she's actually still a teenager who lost both of her parents too. A teen who is also now in charge of caring for her much younger sister, trying to help lilo, and we don't know if Nani ever got to fully and properly grieve for her parents or if she got to grieve at all. She now has to prove she's capable of caring for lilo and has to find a job, try her hardest to prove that she deserves to keep lilo, after having to bury her parents.

Two things 1 did you know the language stitch speaks is actually an almost fully complete language they put a lot of effort into such a small part of the series and i love it. Its like like sprinkles on top of ice cream dosent need to be there but its always pleasent when it is 2 its not in this video but in others but when you so.sometimes slip into a british sounding accent is that intentional or is it your original accent just comes out sometimes

Honestly, the hula teacher should have addressed both sides of the fight; not just Lilo. The ginger girl provoked her, and based on the dialogue and the context of this movie, I’m pretty sure this has happened before. If ginger girl has provoked Lilo to violence before, she should know better than to do it again. Though she’s probably feeling like she’s more in the right than Lilo because the teacher never talked to her like he talked to Lilo. If you don’t want to get beat up, don’t taunt the kid who can (and has) beat you up. Seriously!

I lost it at Nani the fuck. I like how they could have made Cobra Bubbles an outright villain for wanting to take Lilo away, but instead they made him a reasonable authority figure who just sees a lot of red flags and wants to make sure Lilo is properly taken care of.
