This fourth instalment in the composition exercises based on a drawing of lilies from life develops the drawings into a repeat pattern for a border.
After the border is designed, a notan (black and white) version is done in Chinese ink on mulberry bark paper.
Through repeat practice, this exercise is designed to develop sensitivity to spacing and harmony in design, a core skill of pictorial composition.

Hi Mike, It helps because (I believe that) the foundation of composition is good spacing and sensitivity to design. By continually practising spacing and design in a very focused way, without other distractions, we can build our 'design muscles' if you like. How would you describe composition as you know it, and how does this approach differ from the way you wouldlearn to improve compositional skills?

Latest composition design exercise vid: Taking a life drawing of some lilies and creating a notan (black and white) border design from it. This exercise develops sensitivity to harmony and spacing and is based on exercises found in the completely excellent and most wonderful book Composition by Arthur Wesley Dow.
