Hearing Quast sing anything else than Javert is a much minor problem for me than hearing anyone else singing Javert - for me no one could even equal Quasts performance!
Philip Quast is the best musical performer I have ever heard. Maybe there are more technically perfect singers, maybe there are better actors (though he's a GREAT actor in non-musical roles)... but NO ONE combines the two as well as PQ!
Man, the 80s musical actors had actual talent. The singers nowadays have such thin untrained voices. Both these men are phenomenal. Quast is the best Javert!
Not sure who you are listening to but there are boatloads of exceedingly talented/powerful singers in musical theater today and there were also thin “untrained” sounding voices back in the day too. 🤷♀️
i've never seen this musical, but this song makes me want to see it. it's so beautiful! it's great to see Javert and Jekyll/Hyde singing a song together, they are both amazing!
✨✨✨ they are both insanely good and I'd like to say I couldn't decide but Philip Quast has the absolutely most beautiful voice (to me) and it always makes me so sad that there are so few of his... Anthony Warlow is phenomenal as well, especially as 25th Anniversary: Phantom of the Opera; he was one of the phantoms and this whispered *grasp it, sens it* - goose bumps moment✨ that's his very own and special thing too, but nobody, absolutely nobody comes close to PQ, his Javert from the 10th Anniversary: Les Miserables on June 8th. October 1995 at the Royal AlberHall in London - absolutely unmatched; seen a lot of good Javerts but none like him... 🥰Heartbreaker - really🥰 - here on the other side of the world...🥰✨✨✨
I can only listen to Anthony on youtube since his music isn’t available in the US. I pray that this will change in the future since he has the voice of a god. 😩
I wish Australia would stage The Secret Garden again, a revival is long overdue! If Warlow and Quast can't do it then Simon Gleeson and Hayden Tee would be good. They sang this at the Beyond Miserables concert in support of Beyond Blue while touring as Jean Valjean (Gleeson) and Javert (Tee) in the current production of Les Miserables. I've only heard audio of the performance but it was really good.

Philip Quast is wonderful but I don't think Anthony Warlow disappoints either! These are my two favorite male voices on Broadway and it is wonderful to hear how they come together.
How I love this song. It is beautiful in every single way. As fingersfly43 said, once heard never forgotten. And Anthony Warlow and Philip Quast, they are both amazing, nobody could have done this better. I fear I will never be able to listen to this song again with other singers, I will only compare everything with these two, because in my opinion, they are and will always remain the best. ;)
Also you might notice in the original London cast recording, the guy who sang Neville actually did the highest note in "Lily's Eyes" instead of Archie. I guess the score was adjusted to Quast's best range.
in the London, Australian, and 5th Avenue Productions, Neville sings the high sustained Gb, and in some cases even comes in on their last chorus on the higher harmonies Archibald is written to sing. There are also published full orchestrations transcribed in higher keys or with Neville actually written taking the higher note, so actually yes, it is quite normal to see this song move around a bit part-wise between these two characters production to production.
@@benthomasstrong4033 it’s not “pretty standard” as an arrangement. And it never happened in Australia. The only reason it happened in London is because, for some reason, Quast was cast as Archibald and Peter Polycarpou as Neville, despite them both being better suited to the other role. In my experience, the change is normally insisted upon by headstrong (dare I say arrogant) Nevilles who are dead set on having a high note or two. 9/10, particularly in professional operations, it’s performed as originally written. It’s definitely not “standard” as you’ve indicated previously.
its amazing...the reason this song is so thrilling is that it tests the average baritone and tenor the the reaches of their range.....philip quast does both parts equally well. god i love quast!
This has been one of my favorite duets for as long as I can remember and I still come back to it to listen constantly.. one of the things that makes me extremely sad in life is knowing I won't ever get to see them perform live together.
That last note never fails to bring goosebumps...had forgotten how much I love this song...and especially these two performers!! Awesome, simply awesome!!
I have always maintained the idea that this was Snape's song! When I finally had proof via the 7th book I ran into the next room, ripped my Secret Garden OBC recording and promptly dedicated this song for Severus Snape, Total Hero, tears dripping from my eyes.
Fantastic. Love them both. Such great voices. I have this on CD, and their voices are very similar, which makes it work really well (to my ears, at least!!).
amazingly I never noticed how good Philips voice was until I heard this. well i hadn't heard him sing anything other then the songs he sang on play school
There's a funny old cd i can't find anymore with David hobson and anthony warlow called tenor and baritone, and for ages david has been tenor to Anthony's baritone in opera australia gilbert and Sullivan , and David hobson and teddy tahu rhodes did au fond du temple saint, and a beautiful album together called you'll never walk alone. I was so lucky to see their one night only concert in Melb at hamer hall. It was just sublime
First time of hearing this duet. Very powerful. Two excellent singers in unison. Will be looking for more of their works. Ive heard Javert but not the other chap.
I've never heard Philip Quast has done any role on Broadway, not to mention understudying. I know he starred in the West end production of Secret Garden around 2001.
Oh I just realized this song is also in Anthony Warlow's selection album "Best of act one", which is a great selection of his past recordings. I think it's still available in some online shops, if you're interested.
