I've lived in Korea for 26 years, am married to a Korean, have taught English to hundreds of students and am a member of an archery club with 160 members. I've taught dozens of students whose family name is spelled "Choi". We currently have six members at the archery named "Choi". Absolutely none of them say their name "Choi" as in the English word 'choice'. Pronounce their names correctly! "Choi" is pronounced "Chay"; the "i" in Mi is "ee" (there is no long i sound in the Korean language.); and the "u" in Sun is "oo" giving us "Soon". If it were the soft 'u', it would be written Seon. Her name is pronounced "Chay Mee Soon". The "L" in Lim is silent; The "si" is 'shee' ; and the "eo" in Hyeon is a soft 'u' as in umbrella. Her name is pronounced "Im Shee Hyeon". Most Koreans had their names "Romanized" using the McCune-Reischauer system, a rather imperfect system, introduced in 1937. The South Korean government now uses a much better system introduced in 2000 that better reflects the actual pronunciation of Korean names and words. Unfortunately most Koreans are stuck with their names recorded using the old system. Your announcer has been mispronouncing Korean names for far too long. Talk to the archers and listen to how they pronounce their names instead of relying on an imperfect Romanizing system.
