In all seriousness I wonder why they haven't put SNC or NEO up on arena recently. They are wasting the end of their time in Standard, because they want players to pretend Throne of Eldraine is good (not wilds, throne)

"These play patterns didn't drive people away". Because to those of us who played in the 90s and early 2000s, these play patterns WERE Magic. Balance, Armageddon, Icy Manipulator, Stasis and Winter Orb were all contained in Alpha. For over a dexade, Constructed Magic was never a "fair" game of two wizards deploying all the color and types of mana they could want, free from the fear of land deatruction, casting a creature with four abilities every turn, and seeing which overpowered army came out on top. I was a competitive Standard player from around 1997-2006. Two of my favorite decks ever were Counter Phoenix and Nether Haups. I liked countering spells. So did a lot of other people. Same with land destruction, hand destruction, 4 turn burn kills, and every combo deck under the sun. That was just Magic. Just because it's different now doesn't mean it was BAD then. I love the reviews of these sets pointing out how crazy unbalanced they were for Limited, how much chaff there was, etc. But when you start down the road of "Constructed was just all bad play patterns back then and looking back it's amazing people didn't leave the game in droves", it gets my hackles up.

35:14 Yes! All of us players felt that way with Masques block. Which is why we all scratched our head when Wizards did that again 5 years later with Kamigawa block. Those of us who stuck around did so in spite of the weak sets, not because of them.

Mercadian Masques Limited was an absolute death march. I was a PTQ grinder when that set came out and even I said, after playing in the MM Prerelease tournament, "I could never play 7-9 rounds of this again". And I didn't.

Anyone know what they're talking about with the pack order in drafts? I started drafting regularly from original Ravnica on and I've never had a draft in which it wasn't opened in set release order.
@alexmajor2366
@alexmajor2366 Месяц назад
For years during the block model, the most recent expansions were opened earliest in the draft, heading backwards in release order with the next packs. But at first it was the reverse
@tmille171
@tmille171 Месяц назад
@@alexmajor2366 Yes, they clearly began to design with that in mind. For example, you'd draft your creature type lord first from Dark Ascension, and then support it with your two Innistrad packs.

The art for limited resources doesn't really fit the card, but it is cool fantasy art. I like it more than much of the MTG illustrations of recent years

I agree with marshall. Driftgloom coyote is gonna be a top white uncommon. prob one of the better uncs in the set. remember when we had that 1/4 thing thing in MOM (i think?) that exiled a thing that cost 3 or less, that was a good card and this seems better. i realize there was a context to the 1/4 with artifacts , etc, but my point is i think LSV and TBS are too low on this.
@Eszik3
@Eszik3 Месяц назад
That was Annex Sentry in ONE. Yeah that was great, but it also only cost 3. I definitely see why they're somewhat low on the card, because it is expensive and there's gonna be a lot of great etbs in this set cause there's a blink theme. I guess it will really depend on how easy it is to kill a 4 (potentially 5) toughness creature
@51gunner
@51gunner Месяц назад
I think it depends on what you're removing - I think removing the 2-mana creature or less is the better play? If you remove something big on their side of the board this thing is going to either be very worth double-blocking, or be the big removal check. Maybe its real role is to eat removal so your 5+ mana bomb after it doesn't get the removal. If you remove something small I think that's better because your coyote is then much closer to hitting the vanilla test. I think its real job is to top the curve of what looks like a pretty aggressive red/white aggro deck in the format. Push your opponent's life total early, then slam this to take out an important blocker that might have stabilized them. I know there'll be games that end after it resolves.
@markbrierley6367
@markbrierley6367 Месяц назад
While listening to Marshall I completely didn't understand how he wasn't getting it. We had this card in MoM but it was only really playable because it had Phyrexian synergies and it Plainscycled. If this had been a 4/5 with no counter it would be a lot better, but as is it's use is narrow in current limited. The Annex Sentry was so good because the only real decks in that format were RG monsters (so this snagged the few mana dorks that slowed that deck down) or toxic (which this easily blocked most of the relevant creatures) and it cost 3. This is not a 2 for 1. Because they get the creature back they just spend a removal spell and it's a straight 1 for 1, with possible downside if you snagged a creature with an etb. People pretty regularly don't like the 5 mana removal spells and this is frequently worse because it gives your opponent options. And even worse because this is plays more like a tempo card and 5 mana for tempo removal is overcosted.
