In this video I show how I produced a sunflower food plot for dove hunting. Sunflowers can be hard to raise in areas with high deer numbers but I was able to keep the deer herd off the sunflowers. I also talk about nitrogen needed and also pre emergent herbicides I used to keep the food plot weed and grass free.

Thank you sir, I really appreciate you saying that! I try really hard on my plots, but I definitely have some that flop! Thanks for watching

Wow, by the time you count up all the seed, chemicals, fertilizer, (not to mention the equipment and labor) and about one dollar a shot, that limit of Doves is going to be really darn Expensive!! But I hope you really get to enjoy several hunts and make every shot count!!

For me and my daughters to get outdoors together, it will be worth every penny. But you are 100% right, there’s definitely been some money spent there! Thanks for watching

I’m betting he will also be selling some hunts on that field through his outfitting business to recoup some of that cost.

It sure is looking good. My pre-emergent worked well, but my single row planter I think put my seed too deep in a lot of spots so I didn't get the amount of plants that I wanted. My soil is a sandy loam and in June we only received a 1/4 inch if rain so even my dove proso millet is suffering. A lot of my sunflowers are stunted but they all seem to be making flowers. I just hope they produce seeds. Thanks and I'll keep watching your progress.

Good deal! I bet they will make seed! Sunflowers are really easy to plant to deep, with a planter or by broadcast. The old saying I go by is when disking or planting is if you can’t see a few on top of the ground your planting them to deep. Glad your pre emerge worked well! Thanks for watching

We talked thru email this week..... pre emerge is definitely what we need to look into. We've just done round up on our plots and we get grasses and weeds pretty quick.

Yes sir! Pre emergents are critical for food plots. Thanks for watching

Hello Wes, Thank you for making such great videos. Unfortunately I think my beans and sunflowers I planted are not going to make out too well this year due to the lack of rain we have had shortly after they started coming up. As of now my area is in a drought, as of last Thursday we are about 4-5 inches behind and the few thunderstorms we have had are hit or miss. So I am going to switch gears and shoot for fall planting, I do have to add lime and as of right now I can't get AG lime delivered or spread so I was thinking about doing it myself using the pelletized lime which thanks to my cousin I can get it at cost. I know it's more expensive than AG but just wanted to pick your brain on putting it down verses AG lime. According to the print on the bag it only saves me about 200 lbs per acre, from my calculations 1 ton of either equals 1 ton. I feel that I will start using pre-emergent this fall, I normally just buy seed that is roundup ready as in the beans and corn I planted this spring. I did try the Irish Spring soap and it worked sort of, I think if I add some scarecrows that might be enough of a deterrent to allow the crop to come up enough before the deer hammer it. The company I buy my seed from said that "Milorganite" brand will reduce deer browse by 30% so I might try adding a few bags of that for fall planting to see if it helps any. Thank you for explaining this and making video's for all of us.

Glad your enjoying the videos and finding them helpful! Yes pelleted lime will be just fine, it’s 10x as easy to put down vs ag lime. The only reason we don’t use pelleted is the price. I don’t use many pre emergents in the fall, I typically don’t have near the weed or grass pressure in the fall as I do the spring

Thanks!! I have never used a pre-emergent before so I’ll give it a try. Thanks again

Wes, is that the same field where you tried the noise makers and scarecrows too guard against the deer density browse pressure in early planting? Can you provide your thoughts on the overall effectiveness of those efforts and learnings for best practices going forward. The deer density problem is very common in my area and the noise makers were a really neat approach. Thank you.
