Italian filmmaker Lina Wertmüller made history as the first Oscar-nominated female director for her work on the 1970s film “Seven Beauties.” She didn’t win the golden statuette then, but 42 years later, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences bestow an honorary Oscar. The significance of her historic directing nomination wasn’t lost on her at the time - and she looks back at it now with deep pride. Congratulations Lina! Proud to be Italian!

Lina has always been and is a brilliant, amazing working woman...when we italians work with our heart, passion and intellect we can do everything. @Ro Pi no she has not dementia, she's just very old and with a peculiar personality. Mrs Lina Wertmüller has always been peculiar and edgy... let's say naif. I don't see anything bad or embarrassing about her behaviour and people get it. It's a very natural, spontaneous moment, that's all...and as many very old people do, she keeps telling things. She has always been smart, cultured, intelligent and very talented. Someone we italians have respect for and you shouldn't say such thing...wish you to became this old and still be full of life and spirit. Anyway...to each one is own opinion. We agree to disagree. I am not easy on bad judgements as you are, and I do not define someone based on a single occasion, especially when the person is very old. Over the years I have forgotten about the Great Lina Wertmuller. I was a fan in my youth. Her films along with Ingmar Bergman and Federico Fellini changed the way I looked at film making. She is great making history as the very first female director to be nominated for a feature film. I love her work. Thanks for this tribute.
legendary. I met her at Bologna Railway station one day, she was carrying her backback and she saw her train was going to leave, so she started running and a transformer (for her cinematic equipment) came out of backpack. So funny. What a woman!

E per quanto riguarda la tua domanda ti rispondo che sulla carta OVVIAMENTE l'italia non è tutta nei social, ma purtroppo ciò che attrae e di cui si parla di più non è di certo gente di spessore. Accendo pochissimo la televisione, il mezzo di informazione più di massa che si possa trovare, e ciò che vedo è raramente cultura. @@aqualcunopiaceclassico3201 la mamma l'indimenticabile Ingrid Bergman era molto ma molto più della figlia. Pur essendo bellissima Isabella, Ingrid era più bella e senza dubbio di gran lunga più talentuosa come attrice.
Lina should have won back in 1977 for Seven Beauties. She deserved it! When asked by Jane Campion, at the time a student in Australia, “How does one find the money to make a film?” she responded “Anything goes, even stealing. You need to do whatever it takes to follow your passion”.
Sophia Loren will never lose her astonishing beauty. But just look back at her old classic films from the 1950s and 60s, wow. The most incredible beauty in motion picture history. Happy for sweet little Lina. RIP Legend.

Grande Lina: una dei pochi registi italiani apprezzati con continuità negli U.S.A. pur girando sempre nella nostra lingua (altri, se non si chiamavano Fellini o De Sica, avevano giusto qualche riconoscimento occasionale e fama momentanea). Quanto all'odio superstizioso del viola, qui lo manifesta "contro" la Rossellini davanti al mondo, ma nel 1986 accadde che nella prima ufficiale di "Notte d'estate con profilo greco, occhi a mandorla e odore di basilico", al cinema Ariston di Cagliari perché girato in Sardegna, mia sorella e due sue amiche chiesero di entrare e inaspettatamente le fecero sedere in prima fila essendo quasi vuota perché occupata solo da pochi del film e delle autorità. Lei era sul palco insieme al sindaco o assessore o presidente della Regione che stava parlando, si accorse che tutte e tre erano (casualmente) vestite di viola e le guardò di traverso 😀. Che poi abbiano portato iella all'insuccesso del film non saprei, perché effettivamente non era tra i migliori che ha fatto, con la Melato che praticamente riciclava il personaggio di "Travolti da un insolito destino..." (girato sempre in Sardegna) e Placido che quanto meno ricordava il meridionale interpretato da Giannini nello stesso film.
Congratulazioni a Lina Wertmuller per aver vinto l Oscar Alla Carriera se lo merita TUTTO QUANTO!!! E' una bravissima regista italiana e grande Donna!!! Quindi meritatissimo questo Oscar!!!! Tra' I suoi film piu' belli TRAVOLTI DA UN INSOLITO DESTINO NELL' AZZURRO MARE D'AGOSTO
Isabella Rossellini is absolutely gorgeous: she is the spitting image of her late mother. However, they should have explained the reason why the colour purple, in Italy, is a colour associated with bad luck: in the past centuries, during holy week, no theatre performances were allowed, because the church was in mourning and the poor actors really were starving, hence the association of purple with bad luck. The colour of mourning for the church to the present days is purple, no matter how many years have passed and performances are now allowed, yet actors remain superstitious.
Lina says it like she thinks it! Such an unabashedly upfront and intelligent woman! Such like La Loren and Bella Rosellini...here is a luminary who is just unforgettable....

Isabella can make any situation perfection. Lina was indeed charming nevertheless, a phenomenal legacy for female auteurs and artists. And Sophia was, as always Miss Eleganza. But with Isabella... My heart stops.
She obviously enjoys talking to the audience getting laughs milking it a little. She is truly one of the great directors of the 20th century. If you love film go and see her work her humor her esthetic sense and the absurdity of society including violence in our world without showing anything x-rated. Mari-Angela Melata and Giancarlo Giannini are timeless heroes and victims in her films. Nothing she did is dated or feels old rather time has caught up with her ! She was a “feminist” at a time when it wasn’t popular and she had the men joining in. Well deserved award but too late, sad that the academy didn’t come to its senses sooner. The director that comes to mind and is still active would be Pedro Almodovar. If you are too young to have seen these masterpieces go and find them it will change you profoundly.
Credo che per il nostro cinema non ci sia più l'occasione di aver talenti come: sophia loren, anna magnani, monica vitti, Claudia cardinale, gina lollobrigita, isabella Rossellini, mariangela melato; stessa cosa come i registi: rossellini, franco Zeffirelli, luchino visconti, vittorio de sica, fellini ... MI SBAGLIO??? la generazione di adesso non sa mancho che cos'è il neorealismo! Ormai il cinema italiano e di serie C solo film di cinema panettoni (salvo alcuni registi) .... mi sa proprio che non ci sia più un RISORGIMENTO. Chi sarà la prossima nominata ai oscar? BARBARA D'URSO? Oppure tutti i suoi invitati?
