I had a 63 and a 66 when I was younger. 63 has the 430 with 315 hp and the 66 had a 462 with the 340 hp . Totally incredible cars, Ford out did themselves with these cars

I remember Perry Mason driving a gorgeous white convertible in his show.

My brother owned a 64 in that color. It was straight with original paint and interior and was an absolute tank. One dangerous thing about these is that the detents on the transmission gear selector would wear out to where the shift lever could drop out of park. A rule of ownership is that you never left the car running lest it drop into gear and take off on its own. Someone at the shop doing a front end rebuild on my brother’s car did not heed those instructions and the car promptly dropped into reverse and crunched the front end of another car. It suffered a cracked tail light and scratches on the bumper.

Great video! I bought a 1962 convertible on July 2nd 1993 for $1,000. It was baby blue just like the picture in the brochure. It was sitting outside for a few years. It started right up after a new battery. I wanted to drive it to my inlaws for the Fourth of July. DMV was closed so I drove it 200 miles on bias-ply tires, no registration or insurance and made the round trip! I sold it two years later when my daughter was born.

I bought the engine/Transmission from this car about 20 years ago, still have it sitting in my shop if anyone needs one! Ran awesome when they pulled it for me.

3:48... That's not why they call it suicide door, they call it that because if, say, you open it at highway speed to maybe close it tighter or something it can yank you right out.

Yup, with the VIN, you win: 2 for 1962 model year, Y for Wixom, MI assembly, 82 for four door Continental sedan, H for 430 V8 with two barrel and the rest is the production sequence. The Wixom, MI plant operated from 1957 to 2007 and made over 6 million vehicles in the 50 years it operated. It was also the "exclusive" Lincoln plant for a time. No tag, can't brag, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 53A for Continental four door sedan, M for Sultana White exterior paint, 71 for White interior trim, maybe 11 for Boston, MA sales district, possible 4 for dual range automatic transmission, among other codes. Correct, that is "genuine" California walnut veneer on the door panels and instrument panels. No, Per-Lux was a company that made ignition conversion kits. In 1983, the California Air Resourced Board issued a ruling that their devices did not render pollution controls ineffective. This car probably had an electronic ignition conversion kit installed at one time and that's what card is from. There were/are other companies that made similar kits. Per-Lux also made driving lights. Today, there is a company called Anvil Cases and a gun shop on that property address shown on the card. Safelite Auto Glass is now at the address where that Midas was in 1978. Based on the 1981 insurance paper in the glove box, it's reasonable to say this car was on the road close to 20 years from 1962 to 1981-1982, and maybe beyond. So it lived a "good life" for a length of time and was in reasonable enough condition on Thursday April 27, 1978 to get exhaust work done.

1966 2 door coupe was a favorite.

Always wanted one. Found a deal back in 97 or 98 on a relatively clean 69. Repainted it in black. Stashed it in the corner of the garage. Tripped over it until last fall. Drug it out. Got it running. Had it 25 years and STILL have never driven it. Trying to change that this summer. Thanks for the great videos !

Hi Steve, Great video on this beautiful Lincoln. I've always loved big cars, and Lincoln definitely fit the bill. After these 2 Lincoln videos I'm gonna dig out my 70 Continental and do a short road trip. Those 430s and 462s were great engines. The few I've owned you could stand a nickel on end on top of the engine. I believe these beasts tip the scale at around 5000lbs. Steve, I found your RU-vid channel by accident, but I'm hooked ! I grew up graduating High School in 1982. Funny I never knew how special the cars were back then, even living in Detroit. I think deep down in every man exists a desire to bring something back from their glory days. Also your endless knowledge is something else . Keep it up !

Im a huge symmetry fan, and i love the double hump dash. 60s fords had beautifully styled interiors. Chrysler had some awesome interior's too, like the first gen 66-67 fastback dodge chargers. The rear seating on the chargers were beautiful

Transmission was the Lincoln Turbo-Drive. first 2 door in this series was 66. also, 67 was the last convertible, not 68. Thanks for the video

One of the classiest cars ever made!

Continentals were first introduced as full unit construction starting in 1958 but the 1961 Continental when introduced was immediately recognised as the standard for luxury and understated elegance. At the time Cadillac was still using tailfins and Chrysler was still suffering from Virgil Exner's "Suddenly '60 " hangover. Of course when I was in the second grade the image of the 1961 Continental was burned into my memory as the car John F. Kennedy was assassinated in which I saw on display at the Henry Ford Museum that was rebuilt after that with an armored roof doors and windows and an uprated engine because of the added weight.

Back in lats 70s a guy down the street had a 62 midnight blue with the silver blue interior with deep dish craigers white walls factory green tinted windows had a nice rumble to it he keep it mint and his buddy in the same building had a 63 cad convertible work on it for years till it was finish good old car memories thanks for being me back

I've never cared for this style of Lincoln but, I won't hate on anyone who does. To each their own. I truly enjoy every Junkyard Crawl video no matter what the subject vehicle is.

"Hidden girders and bridgework." I've heard them called "torque boxes". Or maybe they're something different altogether 🤔 I have heard the term "torque boxes" when referring to welded assemblies on the underside of unit constructed, convertible cars, meant to keep the car from twisting.

I've liked those cars since I was a kid and finally got one several years ago.

It was "Thunderbirdesque" for a reason. This body was originally intended to be the new T-bird for '61. (Doesn't require too much of a stretch of the imagination to picture it as a 2 dr.?) McNamara (Then Ford President before he became JFK's Sec. Def.) saw the prototype, was enamored and decided it would be the new Lincoln Continental. Everybody wins! We got this gorgeous 1st gen Continental and the even lovelier 3rd gen Thunderbird. Thank you so much, Mr. Robert McNamara

8:34 gave me a chuckle, Steve. It's been 70 odd years since I've thought about it, but when I was a wee sprat, I'd sometimes try to gain her attention when my Gram was having a conversation with someone and she'd say, "Don't be a Butt-Inski." Funny how things are remembered when we achieve geezerdom, eh? Also, "Gill" is a measure of whiskey in Scotland, which I think reflects favorably upon the town's Colonial founders. Rear hinged back doors were great for "Fire Drills" when a carload of us were "Draggin' the Strip" at night. I had a '48 Dodge back then with such doors, which gave us a two-second edge over the car next to us at a stoplight. Rock on.

Being in my moms belly when JFK was assassinated thats what these cars remind me of ( so many images of that day over the years ) also my moms uncle owned a metalic green 68.... he always drove nice cars and treated us kids great. Thanks Steve youre a encyclopedia of knowledge my friend !!

Love Elwood Engel designs. After the forward look Plymoths, Lincoln Continentals are my favourite car. I dont have one here (down under) but do have a fuselage Dodge (Plymouth Fury) which retains many of this Lincoln’s styling themes. Which is not surprising given Engel was at Chrysler by this point and took his designs with him! Very special to me

This body style was certainly a radical departure from the previous model! In all honesty, I can’t really decide which iteration I prefer? I’ve always loved the elegant and understated look of these 60’s era yachts, but on the other hand, the “50’s Flamboyance” of the previous model was perfectly suited for its time! Tell you what - park a nice example of either version in my garage (if it fits!) and I’ll learn to love it……😂

Somewhat curious that Rob't McNamara [head of Ford] would sign off of dual exhausts when he demanded 2bbl carbs on Lincolns. And, yes.....THAT Rob't McNamara who left Ford to become JFK's Sec. of Defence.

I remember a joke about jacking up the corner of a Lincoln Convertible and still having 3 wheels on the ground.

Steve never disappoints! I have learned so much on this channel. Would have liked to see lockjaw sitting on those leather seats but it was cool to see that old automotive magazine I never knew about. And I never knew that they only came with a 2bbl

Indeed, Special Interest Autos, as well as another, the now defunct Classic Auto Restorer, great publications. Richard Langworth, a great automotive writer, did a fab book on K/F. As a pump jockey at a Texaco, you had "those cars/customers" that stood out. One of these barges would would dock at the pump island seemingly suffering from rot in it's lowrider stance. Also in dire need of a muffler. This particular drop top edition in Ben Hurr Gold, piloted by a rather chunky lady and her gigantic St Bernard- that took up a lot of the rear seat. Most of the time handing the lucky attendant a few rubles of that hard sticky like candy. Always ordering maybe $2 or $3 and away the log plumed. Always wonder about these and their unibody,,which made for great Jamesbond fold aways.

I once took my car to a shop in the late 80s, and the mechanic was working in the next bay on a Continental convertible of this generation. We got talking and he described how frustrated he was, and showed me some of the guts of the convertible system pullout out. Limit switches, motor-driven screws, and "miles" of wire. Extremely complicated!

Special Interest Autos was a great magazine. And for the longest time you could buy back issues directly from them! And why 'Special Interest Autos' ? This was to differentiate between true classics (like a 1930's Duesenburg) and a more common mass produced car. Today, most people call any 'old car' a 'classic'.

That was fantastic. My all time favourite car is a 1964 one of these. Though that gas mileage is a shocker ! I wonder if this thing was in some kind of wreck ? It always amazes me that something that was so luxurious on day 1 ends up disintegrating in a forest ....

The ultimate mobster car! I bought one in 1985 for 300 bucks… the interior was awesome! All that chrome trim. Alas it was too rusty and I sold it to a Lincoln specialist on the CT / RI line. He mailed me a dealer plate and I drove it out there, talk about a different era!

One of the most beautiful Lincolns ever created. Anything had to have been better than the late '50s to 1960. Can't stand that body style of Lincoln. In fact I can't really even remember the name of it. I know the Mark 2 was a beautiful car but that late '50s to 1960 model was god awfully hideous! Great video Steve!

Years ago, our garage had a customer who owned a 67 convertible. Beautiful car, but I found the interior lacking for room. I wished the seat went back farther, but then the rear leg room was already getting tight. One time the whole power top sequence got out of order and the guy had to drive to our shop with the top half up. What a lot of wiring, relays and switches.

Those slab sided Lincolns look great. At least until some idiot parks too close and puts a dent in your door. I recall seeing Robert Vaughn driving one of the 4 door convertibles In Ridgefield CT in the 1990s. It was at an antique car show, but he wasn’t there to enter the car, he was just there to look at the other cars.

The ‘65-‘66 Ford Galaxies sold in Australia actually had the Lincoln instrument cluster in the standard Ford dash.

My dad had two of these in the early 70s. Had a black one and went part-crawling in a salvage yard and found a parts car so nice he bought it and put it on the road as well.
