Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock. "Different Drum" was written by singer-songwriter Michael Nesmith (from The Monkees) in 1964. This was Linda's first big hit in 1967 when she was only 21. She has had so many hits in her solo career such as "Blue Bayou", "You're No Good", "Long Long Time", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado" etc.

The different drum expression comes from a quote by the poet Henry David Thoreau "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away." Love Linda's voice she is definitely in my top 10 favorite female voices. Not in any order Julie Andrews, Karen Carpenter, Celine Dion, Beverly Sills, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Judy Garland, and Doris Day.

This was Linda's first hit record with the Stone Poneys. Mike Nesmith, one of the Monkees, wrote this, a local LA Band covered it, it became a local hit, she heard it on the radio, and recorded it, and boom! big hit!

Funny trivia. Mike Nesmith the writer of the song tried doing this while he was with The Monkees, and the producers told him "it wasn't really a Monkees song". So he turned it over to Linda who had her first chart success. (edit) And profs to y'all for doing this amazing song, AND a great movie tonight. Totally made my night.

And Nesmith once again proved that the producers were egotistical control freak idiots, esp. Don Kirchner. All they had to do was change the style from Nesmith's "swing beat" version to a straight rock beat medium ballad tempo. Nesmith or Micky Dolenz could have sang it with the others doing backup vocals - it would have at least been a good album cut and they would have found use for it on the TV show, like another script when Davy Jones falls in love with yet another girl, who's not interested [if so, she must have been sick lol] But nooooo...

Eagles Glenn Frey and Don Henley were band members of The Stone Pony's. Linda encouraged them when they wanted to start the Eagles, class lady with a great voice. "When Will I Be Loved", "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" and "Love is a Rose" are favorites

The Stone Poneys, 1964-1968, were a trio; Linda, Bobby Kimmel & Kenny Edwards. They made 3 albums. Then, Linda went solo. She met Frey & Henley in 1970, when she was working at the Troubadour & hired them for her band.

This song and Silver Threads and Golden Needles absolutely make me want to sing at the top of my voice, and I often do when I hear them, and it's really fun! One thing about Linda....her voice is so gorgeous, yet when I hear her sing, I feel like I can sing well too, and I think that makes her so relatable.

Linda is a true talent. True. But this song, and these lyrics, I am grateful to Michael Nesmith and all who may have helped cowrite this song. These lyrics have held my hand through decades of justifying why I’m not ready to ‘settle down.’ ‘We’ll both live a lot longer if you live without me.’ Powerful. Thank you for this reaction!

And we would see that on the Marquette " Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies. OH, by the way , Michael Nesmith of The Monkees wrote this song. The phrase" Honeychild" gives it away.

This was a huge hit in 1967 when I was in high school and when we first got hear Linda's beautiful voice. Thankfully she stuck around and gave so much more of her beautiful voice. In hearing this again it's probably one of earliest song about female power, asserting her right to live her life as she pleases. The top female singers for me are Linda, Joni Mitchel, Karen Carpenter, Stevie Nicks, and Rita Coolidge.
