I thought Carrie had the strongest voice, but no where near the powerful pipes of Linda. I saw Linda on her Mad Love tour, and she is better live. Yes, we have you tube to see her concerts, but you have to hear her live to know what I’m talking about. All in all, great tribute. It took too long to induct her. Glad to see her friend Glenn Fry singing with the ladies.
Linda is my favorite. Cheryl is absolutely my close second. In my opinion she blows away everyone else on stage. Yes, Linda is still my favorite! But damn Cheryl, you bad.
Yeah Glen made that clear thank God. Unfingbelievable that it took so long. She nor the Eagles invented country rock that credit goes to Gram Parsons and Chris Hilman but she was the female voice of it and the Eagles carried on w/the great Bernie Leadon who was in the Burritos w/the afore mentioned two
Linda's first solo album is considered the first alt country album by a female and was released just months after Parsons and Hillman's. She definitely was one of the country rock pioneers and innovators. She took it to a level others couldn't and she flew with Eagles to fame and fortune and some great music.
Thank God Linda Ronstadt Had So Many Great Singers That Truly Loved Her " It's The Lowlife Trash Like Howard Stern And George Lopez That Made Nasty Lying Comments About Her " They Will Never Be As Great As Our Beautiful Amazing Linda " 😉
michaei leclair agree cant believe it took so long, Glen Fry said it right! So typical of this industry that make money off such pure talent, she makes them pale in comparison! Why they held her back! With exception of Peter Asher!
@@stevenpeyton7476 maybe that’s true. But Elvis’ contribution to music is that he popularized to a mainstream American audience a wider range of genres that tended to be isolated to certain regions and areas of the United States. And with that opened up musical styles to crossover one another.
All these criticisms are horrible! “Carrie can’t this...” or “Sheryl can’t that...” This is a goddamn tribute to Linda! Can’t we just enjoy the music and the amazing voices of these ladies who are performing the tribute! Of course no one is going to sound like Linda. There is only one Linda Ronstadt. Just like there is only one Carrie Underwood and one Bonnie Raitt, etc. That is what makes them stars and makes them all unique!! Fuck, just enjoy the music!
Roger That, Clinton! I loved her from the beginning back in the San Francisco Bay area! Her voice was such that touched me down to the core, in all her music!
This. And FWIW, I've always thought that Carrie Underwood had more than a little bit of Linda Ronstadt in her. Was EXTREMELY pleased to see her here and at Kennedy Honors paying tribute.
So great to see Waddy! No greater blessing to have the opportunity to pay homage to someone who inspired you, encouraged you, and was there at your beginning. These ladies and Mr. Frey put their heart and soul into this tribute. This performance ran as the credits rolled on the 2019 documentary based on Ms. Ronstadt's musical memoir. Though I don't want her to suffer one more day than she can bear, so happy she is still with us. One of my favorite songs from her last album "Adieu False Heart" is "Too Old to Die Young." There's a line that says, "Let me watch my children grow to see what they become." Her children are grown now; I hope at almost 74, she is finding joy and meaning in watching their "simple dreams" unfold.
To be fair though, except for Carrie, these older ladies aren't in their prime. Linda wouldn't have sounded as good at this age as when she recorded these tunes. That said, while Carrie has the power, she is in no way anywhere near the singer that Linda was. Linda got it all, power, heart, phrasing and musicality. All near perfection.
@@rickmilam413 OH PLEASE!!! UNDERWOOD comes NO WHERE close!!! How sick!!! (ಠ_ಠ)>⌐■-■ Just got done listening to Linda, and, Underwoid should have been thrown off the stage!! Come on!! Nowhere near the depth or volume!!! Unfortunately that's what we have today, second rate 'imposters'!!! The other ones didn't matter, they weren't trying to sound like Linda, they were just singing her songs their own way!! UNDERWOOD is the most overrated schlep and don't see how she even 'made' it. No real 'taste' in the world anymore!
Linda Ronstadt, half hispanic, half german, full voice of an ANGEL !!!!! No one else even comes close to the volume, perfect diction, and the sweetest, most lovely, well-rounded, perfect vibrato, voice ever.. EVER..... E V E R....... They didn't mention it but she also sang background vocals on so many records for others.. Her work with James Taylor alone was amazing... I love that you never read about her doing dumb things, getting in trouble, etc.. Just a great kid, and a greater woman... I relate so much to her music and her most expressive way she sings with that perfect voice.. The only other voice that even comes close is that of the wonderful Karen Carpenter.. Love you always, Linda Ronstadt !!
Fran Danco I agree with everything you said...but, just to throw a couple of other names at you, in celebration of strong women singers; Ann Wilson and Pat Benetar as having power, range and control. But all great!
I remember she sang background vocals with Nicolette Larson on The Dirt Band's American Dream, one of my favorite albums. I teared up when I heard she couldn't sing anymore, so sad.
has anyone ever seen her astrological natal chart? WOW! It's in the form of a kite, that look's like a cello, and the Sun in Leo is holding the bow, that stretches across the strings, that are strung from Venus, to the Moon, and the bow goes across it, from the Sun, in Leo, to Jupiter and Neptune in Libra. An intense chart! Truly gifted by the universe! :)
You watch 5 of the greatest female voices in history Its a testament to Linda and the great voice she was blessed with. Linda Ronstadt is a once in a lifetime performer
Unfortunately those who paid tribute to her couldn't Come close to the voice of a lifetime. Linda you were ,and always will be the Best female vocalist period.
Stevie Nicks looks and sings like she's on some meds that make her sleepy! HAHAHAHAHA!!! She sings off key! Her voice is the weakest out off all those female singers.
Everyone here are great singers, but hearing them do Linda's songs only cements the fact that Linda was more wholesome and more natural. Here they all sound great but work harder to make it sound as easy as Linda made these songs sound. What is a shame is poor Linda always doubted her own talents and never fully realized what an amazing voice she was and how she helped give the 70s a certain sound. And now that she can't sing at all she still wonders what he contributions to rock and roll was. EDIT: To my embarrassment, I am finding many more comments the same as mine. Which, believe me, I did not copy. I read the comments after making mine. But that in itself is telling about how many people feel Linda's voice was unique and was a sound of a decade. I wanted to delete this comment but feel it's just one of many that feel Linda Ronstadt was one of the greatest performers of the Rock & Roll era. I, like other commenters here, have no disrespect to these fine singers giving tribute to Linda, but they just don't have that quality that Linda had. And this is something I'm only coming to realize this much later in life. I've known Linda Ronstadt literally all my life, her career began the same year I was born, and she was a very strong presence, but only now am I seeing what a true artist she really was.
Amen to what you say! But also I think she did have pretty big confidence in her voice when she insisted against all advice to turn her talents to Gilbert and Sullivan, to the American songbook (with Nelson Riddle) and later to the Mexican culture she had inherited from her father. None of which were mentioned in this event. In her own book she herself says she was not the queen of rock (she would rather hand that crown to Chrissie Hynde) and was made for more creative, expressive singing, as per the three examples I just gave. Anyway, a truly fine, legendary voice, so sadly lost now.
I don't know of any other singer that could sing so well in several different styles. Styles as different as Rock, Country, Mexican Rancheras, Cuban Boleros and Gilbert & Sullivan on Broadway... she was one of the best ever at each of these wildly different styles of music. She is totally unique and mind blowing. She also seems to be a real decent human being.
As good as these women are, the deep richness in Lindas voice the way she would belt out these songs is unmatched. Look up LR:”When will I be loved” live. Turn it up and see how it’s done, without lip synching! Listen how she hits all the notes perfectly with the right amount of power at the right time. Come on, what a voice!
I was just about to write the same thing. These women sound damn good... some better than others but, Lindas voice was much more than a cut above. Every dynamic, every intonation, the volume and power on each individual note, in short every nuance, simply towered above all these women. Ronstadt was in a class by herself.
Completely agree - Stevie seemed. to have fun - but none of them had the punch Linda did! Maybe Ann Wilson could've pulled it off... It's a shame Linda lost her voice - she could've gone up there and blown them all out the water! We were blessed to have Linda singing for us as long as we did!
No, none of them head her "Punch". Ann Wilson had Ronstadts power and punch but she didn't/doesn't have the vocal range of style that Ronstadt had. Ronstadt also had operatic style, control and power when she sang anything along those lines. "The Pirates of Penzance" comes to mind regarding vocals like that. She also had a huge talent for big band vocals and the Mexican folk music she sang. I think she could have sung just about any style of music out there and stood shoulder to shoulder with just about any of the greats. There's nothing should could have sung where she would have fallen into the background. As brave as she is it must really pain her to have lost that ability. She's said so many times that singing for her was like breathing
No disrespect to the artists paying a fitting tribute to Linda, they did an amazing thing doing this, but it just shows how great Linda is was compared to other artists and those of today singing her songs. Man she was good,,no she was great true greatness..
Linda and Karen from the Carpenters were in their own plane of music. It was like they raised the bar on the singing. The only three I can think of that has maybe reached it is Marah and Adele and Whitney. This was a great tribute.
I definitely agree with that. What has happened to all the great music. Most of these people can't sing or that horrible rap. Very sad the music has died.
Love that Glenn joined them. He was the one who was singing backup to her in the early days on these songs, so he more than any of them deserved to be up there. RIP And Waddy Wachtel up there on the lead guitar just like the old days. Lovely touch.
When the women who are icons say, "I became a singer because I wanted to be Linda Ronstadt".... Everybody from Emmy Lou to Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, and probably some newer ones I've never heard of. Yeah, she shoulda been there already.
Carrie Underwood, Emmy Lou Harris, Bonnie Rait, Sheryl Crow, and Stevie Nicks should all be commended for standing in for Linda Ronstadt. What a power lineup!!! And Dave Grohl in the audience saluting them with a beer...
@HenryFredrick~~Indeed, all these women are awesome~~But I hate that Carrie Underwood always has to show off and sing louder when she's performing with other artists~~She shouldn't even be on the same stage with these awesome women~~
Hearing these great women singing Linda's songs really shows just how powerful Linda's voice was. How much her songs relied on vocals. I get choked up when I think how another unbelievable talent has been silenced.
Pretty stunning and fitting tribute. Obviously no one can replicate Linda, but that doesn’t mean trashing and not appreciating some incredibly great talents paying tribute to one of their heroes
Linda Ronstadt's singing voice was rare and remarkable. The best musicians swarmed around her, her song choices were often inspired and from her ealiest club days through the arena shows to the last notes she sang she never lost songs in vanity. This honor was long overdue, shame the dreadfully untalented rock critic Dave Marsh kept her out. This tribute kind of breaks our rock and roll hearts 'cause she didn't dig idol worship but had she decided to attend before she lost her glorious instrument - she could have given a singing lesson and blown the roof off the place.
+gogo delux Anyone over the age of 50 (ohmygod,ohmygod,ohmygod...I said that?) that doesn't know part of their life was in some way touched or shaped by LR; you iz SADLY mistaken. And, please: Leave Carrie Alone if you don't know what HER accomplishments have been to date. This is about Linda...NO-ONE is her but her. And also, RIP Don Henley.
+gogo delux = Seconding EVERYTHING you said :) ~ Don't know why I'm just now finding out 4yrs late, but my heart IS broken for Linda regarding her affliction from Parkinson's ~ Can't explain it, but my spirit senses that she won't be with us much longer... At the time I'm posting, she'll be 72 this July 2018, which doesn't make the debilitating effects of PD any easier to sustain her health... We've lost too many music icons in recent years way before their time (Prince, Bowie, MJ, SRV, Whitney, AmyW)... Truly breaks my heart :/
Karen Baumgartel The long haired guitarist with glasses playing most of the lead breaks is Waddy Wachtel who was in Linda’s backing band in the 70’s and 80s. He’s also been playing with Stevie Nicks for a long time.
Also, I gained a new level respect for Carrie Underwood here. Never cared for her original work, but damn if she didn’t nail all her parts here; quite a performance
My gosh...why didn't this happen sooner!?! Linda Ronstadt was an icon! As a hippie/flower child then country it's nice to see who is singing her songs! Congratulations Linda.
I think all these greats did an amazing job, and Carrie handled the toughest lines the older ladies no longer have the chops to do. Linda was a better singer than anyone on that stage, but Carrie did her proud. What’s amazing is how effortless Linda was. You can see it in every performance here. They’re all at their vocal limit trying to pull off those tunes Linda could just bang out without breaking a sweat.
Stevie Nicks looks and sings like she's on some meds that make her sleepy! HAHAHAHAHA!!! She sings off key! Her voice is the weakest out off all those female singers.
I just saw Linda’s excellent documentary. They ended it w. a clip from this, so I HAD to watch it again! Five yrs ago, but I will keep coming back to this incredible tribute to Linda R. Thank you to all these talented artists~
Hats off to the Linda Rondstadt tribute but there will NEVER be another singer her equal. Thank you Linda for sharing your amazing voice with the world.
That's a lot of legendary girl power up there, damn. Very emotional seeing them all at once, strong, perfect pitch, paying heartfelt tribute to another legendary dear friend. I hope she felt the love and cried knowing how much we appreciate her.
I'd swap it all of this, as good as it was for just 5 min. with Linda on stage PERSONALLY to receive this WAY overdue tribute, parkinson's will NEVER overshadow our respect and love for this Great lady, and STAR!!!! Thanx for everything you gave us so freely, Linda, you GO girl!!!
Warm hearted but makes you long for Ronstadt's voice and musical chops. Linda was a pioneer when few women were rock and roll road warriors. From the little clubs to the arenas - a remarkable vocalist and no one could touch her torch songs.
All fine but Linda's voice was the most powerful, clear, warm instrument ever. A natural sound hits you within. More important now in an age of pretention and autotune.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame way underestimated the influence Linda Ronstadt had on all of us back in the 70's. It took them way too long to honor her. All of us girls went hoarse trying to sing along. It is more than obvious in these performances that each of these artists was influenced and inspired by the voice and music of Linda Ronstadt.
Couldn't agree with you more! I was fortunate enough to see her in concert twice - two of the greatest moments in my life. Be sure you view the documentary on Linda, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris on RU-vid about their two albums together - Trio and Trio 2
Glad this finally happened Linda was long over due she is the greatest female vocalist ever. I was honored to meet her in the 80's after her concert she held my hand and took the time to talk to me and gave me her autograph sadly I lost it in the hurricane but that memory will be with me forever. Her biggest fan in Houston, Texas
My first crush at 12 years old when I first heard this song by the Stone Pony and still love listening to Linda Ronstadt and her beautiful voice. Brian
Five amazing female singers singing Linda's songs...and together they still fall short of the original. But, I would guess they would all admit that, themselves.
Who ever chooses who gets into the rock'n roll hall of fame needs to be fire, even if it's the whole panel. Linda Ronstadt is an amazing singer and the singing days at the Troubadour live till this day some people recken her voice was unheard of.
Martina McBride should have been on that stage with them. Her rendition of When will I be loved is as close to hearing Linda as you can get. This honor to this wonderful lady was long, LONG overdue.
I agree with you and Martina has always credited Linda as one of her idols and yes Martina delivered that song the way Linda did as a country rock performance and in my opinion the best cover and that's taking into account the original was done by the Everly Brothers.
Listen to Linda sing Karla Bonoff’s Someone to Lay Down Beside Me my god it kills me to this day. My fav song she ever sang. And I love her stuff with Nelson Riddle.
I dont see how Steve fit with the power and brilliance of sound that Linda had. Ah but (a~lassy) guys almost always like a loud woman..tight clothes, blonde hair. 'Breasts and the Rest' com in out -or pushed out ! 🐱 ok brunettes too! Point is, Its almost always a visual "matter." Faded a while ago But she still yells. And thats what is keeping old visual stuff as a fond fantasty memory. Good luck with that. As even trophies need substance.
So true. Linda's voice was unmistakably POWERFUL. I tend to put her in the same category as Aretha Franklin, or Pattie LaBelle in their ability to knock you out of your seat.
I disagree. The best are Bonnie and Emmylou, and Carrie the only she can is scream and go out of tone. Carrie and Sheryl the worst. And Bonnie and Emmylou THE BEST!!!,
Carolayn Stewart Raitt I love Bonnie and Emmylou, but they don’t have near the power or range that Carrie has in this performance. Bonnie had it all in her prime, but Father Time is a cruel SOB.
+KC Heylin (Beachdudeinc) Gotta give him credit, did you see all the braces he has on his elbows and wrists? A lotta years of grinding on the guitar will do that to you.
Waddy still wails! We just got to see him with Joe Walsh in May(on the ticket with Bad Co) and Joe Vitale was on drums and they all still kicked ass! Waddy has been around for longer than most people realize. He was also doing some studio work for The Cowsills(and was very good friends with them). He never seems to age though... Probably Faustian Deal going on there...
maybe I'm ageing.. ill be 40 next year.. but I guess the world is turning... I miss Linda's music.. gosh.. still remember buying "cry like a rainstorm" on cassette..
Don't I know it!!! I remember back to the 70's the Midnight special program on Friday nights, and watching all the rock groups including the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt perform their soon to be greatest hits. And now I am pushing 53 this year, and time is flying for all of us. So let's enjoy the ride, listen to some great music, and share the memories!!! p.s. Happy 40!!!
I recall a man in Montana stelling me how " A guy down on his luck" (in the back of a Gardiner Montana bar, mid- 70's) >"Somebody play Blue Bayou!!" And somehow, I just never forgot it..The song was already imprinted..but that comment just went deep..whenever it seems too hard ..still + always.. Its a Blue Bayou callout (or call-off?) -day.
@@schumi9xwdc My children grew up listening to their father and my favourite artists which is why they wanted to see Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Elton John etc etc...and they are only 23 and 25. They love and appreciate all the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's artists - and also appreciate Drake, J Cole, Weeknd along with EDM and classical music. It is all in what children are exposed to that they consider 'their music'.
These ladies are all in their 50's and 60's(with the exception of Carrie and Sheryl) so you really can't fault them for not being able to hit those notes now. Comparing any of them to Linda in the 70's does a disservice to all of them including Linda. Stevie certainly does not sound as clear as she did in the 70's and 80's but she is still amazing. We just saw her last year with Fleetwood Mac. As you get older, you cannot hit the notes you once did as easily. We just went and saw Elton John in 2014 and even he cannot quite get Yellow Brick Road but he's not as young anymore either. LOL
Why would anyone give this a thumbs down? This is epic, & of the greatest female voices in rock and roll on one stage singing classic rock songs from the talented, stunningly gorgeous, loving n sweet L. Ronstadt. Much love.
Late to the party, but Linda is my favorite female performer. What a voice. That looked like Waddy Wachtel (long curly hair) in the back with the guitar. He played with Linda in her original band.
5 of THE BEST Female vocalists singing the many hits of the GREAT Linda Ronstadt ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What wonderful harmonies of voices and the outstanding ( ALWAYS ) Carrie Underwood ! Wow ! Bravo to all ⭐️
Yeah, I agree that Carrie did the best job and reminded us of Linda's power and control but we also have to remember that Linda was in her 20s and 30s when she sang these songs while three of these ladies are in their 70s, Sheryl was is her 50s, and Carrie is the baby so has the most power and control. It's not just the technically best performance that matters. Sometimes it's just the heartfelt sentiment of her peers that matters.
Only Linda can do true justice to Blue Bayou and most of her other songs as well, and that's not to discredit the wonderful singers up there. Love that Linda's finally finding her place here, but it was a long damn time coming.
as good as some of these singers are, and as iconic as they've become in the business in their own right, hearing anyone sing a Linda Ronstadt song, even when the singer is truly great, just reminds you that LR is untouchable
There has been no other female vocalist that can touch Linda's strength in her voice. From angelic to rough. The sentiment she would show through her singing was a phenomenon that no one will ever touch! Strictly my opinion! She was my favorite female song artist and her personality doing interviews matched her existential view of life and all its abnormalities. Many years ago I saw her in an outdoor amphitheater concert outside of Chicago, I was so ecstatic I barely heard her as I sobbed with joy that I could see her. To be in her presence elated me and it is a memory I will always hold close to my inner being. Thank you, Linda!!!! You are still a remarkable woman.
Ronstadt is praised by so many of the old school singers in opera, musical theather, blues, soul, easy listening, jazz etc. BECAUSE of the range of her vocals. Her extent of scale delivery means she can go low or deep and can hit the highest on the scale. I saw her after Heart Like A Wheel. I also saw her in Pirates in Penzance. The difference was so incredible. Pirates demanded a person who could speak in the song's lyrics as conversation as well as sing hitting operatic notes. Linda's vocal abilities have always placed her in the top 10 of histories best female singers. Look it up!
I can't believe how good these women sounded, especially Carrie Underwood. Thanks to all of them. Linda just had a little extra in her voice. Such a great voice for Rock & Roll.
all these ladies have worked very hard for their place in history and they came together to honor a legend- was a fitting tribute...I thought they were all good in their own space
Linda's Music was part of the fabric that made up my first year of college along with Jackson Browne, Phoebe Snow ,Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt and Bruce Springsteen. When will i be Loved! Thank you Linda!
Simply one of the purest voices ever. Power, pitch, clarity, sustain, resonance, phrasing, timbre, vibrato and that incredible tone bringing it all together. There won't come another Linda..
Carrie Underwood gave it a good try, but it really shows how incredible Ronstadt's voice was! There's no one like Linda! You can even tell the great difference when the other ladies copy her songs. There's no one like Linda!
This was a tribute to Linda, not a karaoke contest to see who sounded more like her...they all did a wonderful job giving tribute to a most wonderful woman..
Amen to that! I hate carrie ,,shes a copycat, and is washed up!!!holds no candle to lindas golden voice!! Nobody can compare to Linda's voice!!! NOBODY!!
@@kellyanndean9374 just listened to this tribute. Don’t think Carrie was trying to copy Linda, but to pay tribute to her. These ladies are all talented in their own right. Actually think Carrie version of Different Drum was excellent. Why so hateful?
Susanna Hoffs should´ve sung her Different Drum or Willin´tribute. She said she learned how to sing by listening to Linda. Her renditions are remarkable.
