In this video, we will compare the Line 6 Helix vs the HeadRush Pedalboard. We are gonna use two amp simulations: the one of the JCM 800 and the one of a Fender Deluxe Reverb, so that we can also compare the sound of amp modeler against the one of the real amps! In the demo song I'm gonna use only custom IR, while in the more sound section of the video, we will also hear the internal cab sim of the two units...I hope you enjoy and please don't forget to subscribe and hit the bell...it's gonna help me to make more videos like this...thank you!!!

Thank you for making these videos. I ordered a Headrush partly because of this video. Both units sound great, but the touch screen, looper, higher quality IRs, and cheaper price of the Headrush sold me. I agree that the Helix has more options on the cab sims, but I noticed in all of these demo and comparison videos that everyone is using IRs, not the modeled cabinet sims, so the Headrush is on it's way to me! Thanks again.

I came here to see this exact video this was the first one that popped up. First great musicianship and music. Second this has to be one of the most comprehensive videos that I’ve ever seen. Thank you. They are very similar and even though the Headrush has a bigger screen and looper I think that I will be going with the Helix. I also think that most people have their minds made up before looking. I have friends that have both and they all love each what they have. The Helix meets my needs and I already have Line6 gear. I’m paying my HD 500 pedalboard to a guitarist that had his gear stolen. Again Leo thank you for the amazing video. I will be doing my own lesson video I hope that you check them out and let me know.

I've been a Line-6 guy for two decades+... The sound differences betweent the two are there, but almost meaningles as it's such a subjective thing to begin with. After I tried them both, I ended up going with the HR unit, because it sounds great AND is a joy to work with. Not having to hook it to a computer to deeply(and comfortably) edit things is huge. With 3rd part IRs being the norm now, and being where a lot of your tone comes from, having twice as many different rigs to choose from just adds to the choices one has to make, HR may have less 'stuff', but in my opinion it has the right stuff in it. Great review & playing, btw!

The most surprising part to me is that the real amps sound so much better than the models when you compare them side by side like this. Thanks! Your video is great. I have the Headrush Pedalboard. The touch screen, the interface, the drag and drop of the effects is very user friendly. Like, super easy. It is interesting that you prefer the light weight of the Helix. I like the sturdiness of the Headrush but I don't have to move it arround. The Helix has plenty of effects but sometimes less is more. I have never tried an Helix but I was surprised that it sounded that thin on the video, honestly (listening with Adam nearfield monitors and UAD soundcard). So, as you said, it is down to personal opinions. Btw, your playing is great too:) It keeps the attention of the listener.

Another great video! One note: I would have noted the Helix LT in the video title. Some might assume it was the Helix Floor. Personally, while I like all the extra FX in the Helix, I just LOVE the simplicity and ease of use of the Headrush products compared to the Line 6/Helix line. One big thing that keeps me from getting a multi-fx unit is the idea of having to deep-dive menus. I HATE that. After watching some videos on the Headrush, I think I could do that no problem. Definitely a much bigger PRO for me. 😃

@@LeoGibsonGtr Interesting opinion, the touch screen basically removes the need for any app since the HeadRushs is so easy to use. But what we did was include the "Hands Free Editing" which allows the users to edit anything in the chain with your feet. :)
@LeoGibsonGtr
@LeoGibsonGtr 4 года назад
@@HeadRushFXHi, touch screen and the hands free are really nice and great option. The point is that when I record music with my PC, my workflow is way better when I can edit with an app in the computer, without having to go back and forward between different peaces of hardware: the Headrush would stay on the floor (even not exactly close to my mixing desk) and I can change the presets and the parameters in the computer while I'm recording or re-amping. Obviously it's just my workflow and a personal opinion. Thank you for your message and for your interest in my channel!

Very important to take into account that he uses the same settings for each model. That means if one company’s real life physical benchmark was dark, bassy, bright, or whatever, the modeled version will reflect that. I have the LT and it sounds WAY better than what is represented here. My point? Many, if not all “differences” pointed out in the comments can be dialed out. As another example I got on Fractal’s waiting list for the M9 and took delivery from one of the first batches released. I spent a week A/B’ing it against my LT. long story short I sold the M9 (at a profit-woo hoo!). It’s SO close. There is no better (within the same price point) these days given where technology is at. I saw no point in learning a whole new ecosystem just for the sake of having the newest toy. I’ve heard all of these brands sound incredible and I’ve heard them all sound like crap. These days it comes down to having good ears, experience creating patches,and knowing how to play.

Ha, ha, ha! You can choose whatever makes you feel comfortable, but Helix actually is more accurate and has more sound stage. Maybe you liked the obvious HI-LO cuts in the Headrush (which people interprets as "tone" and "warmth". Cheers! *EDIT:* those cuts you can do on the Helix at will (and at multiple stages according to your own taste). *EDIT 2:* The Deluxe Reverb sounded awful on the Helix *LITE* , it does not sound like that in my Helix at all.

On the Headrush using cab sim, it doesn't seem as accurate if not mistaken. However IR on Headrush makes it sound more accurate. If what I said even made sense. When I bought my Headrush (upgrading from the Eleven Rack) I considered that the Helix was $700 more expensive and I decided that I don't need that many amps models, effects, etc. The Headrush covers all the bases with what it offers. The Helix offers more redundancy, if that makes sense. If money was no object, I would probably gone with the Axe Fx, but my feeling is that the Headrush offers 80% of the Helix at (1000/1700) * 100 = 59% of the price. More importantly, I serious doubt the vast majority of users could tell the difference in a true random blindfold test.

@mikeaustin4138
@mikeaustin4138 3 года назад
@@mahmoudelsaify7674 I think the Headrush is a huge improvement, especially if you're more than a "bedroom" player. I had to buy a midi controller for the ER and then had to assign the switches. This is built into the HR, at a savings of $300-$400. There are slightly more models in the HR than ER. There's no app to configure the HR as there is with the ER, but the touch screen interface almost compensates for it. HR upgraded to engine and added more DSP processors, so it sounds better. The custom IRs make a *huge* difference in the tone, but I use my HR with an amp using the 4-cable method, so I don't utilize the IRs.

I think the other things to mention are that Headrush has the LED scribble strips and Helix LT doesn't. That's a huge + when playing live, you can look directly at the switch, not at the screen. To get that feature on Helix, you have to spend $700 US more. The whole numbers of specific effects I think is also overrated. If there are 25 distortion pedal models, most of us will only use a few, same with most other effects. I've had a Helix for a couple of years. It's a great product, but when the next version of Headrush comes out, I'll likely give it a go. As others have said, they're pretty much all great now, so it's nice to have the problem of choosing between them. ;)

The Headrush is superior for sound; also they’ve expanded the amount of effects with a free patch... this category is irrelevant for that reason, each company will continue to add things, tweak ui features, etc. so it’s hard to predict in the long run who’s better there. Effects that aren’t useful are common once you get past 40 or so anyways. The last, and perhaps biggest reason to get the HR is the DSP power... you just don’t come across grayed out options very much like you do on the LT, and the hr is built with the future updates in mind. It has plenty of computer power to keep up with improvements for some time to come. And since most people use 3rd party IRs the mic options aren’t very important, either. Get the full HR rather than a pared down helix. Or the gig board instead of helix stomp. For the price of a full helix I got the HR pedalboard AND 2 FRFR108s. A no brainer.

@@justinTime077 maybe... but for me, I’m happy. I downloaded the latest patch and in reality the only thing I use is the ambiverb and I’ve switched out my OCDs for OCD2s... oh, the k (klon) drive shows up in one of my rigs... but really none of it was going to make our break my sound as it is... I really don’t care if they never throw out another update, unless I suppose they’ve improved something I already use, but as I stated it’s not about quantity. I’ve found a handful of great sounds for my gigging purposes and I pretty much stick with that... I’m sure most guitarists do the same... it’s the keyboard players who are guilty of changing software every show!

I bought the Helix and returned it for the Headrush for two reasons: The helix didn't support delay/reverb spill when changing to a new rig/scene. It would let you do it only within the same scene when changing presets within a rig/scene. Also the headrush had noticeably lower latency when playing. It felt more natural and real whereas the Helix felt like there was a touch of latency between the time I plucked the string to the time the sound came out. It wasn't a lot, but just enough to make it feel less engaging. The headrush felt more like being connected to a real amp. I'm not 100% crazy over the Headrush's dirty tones, but no other modeler beats its clean tones in my opinion.

Hi Nick. Thanks for the comment about the latency thing. I thought it was just me. I have the PODGO and the Headrush MX-5. The HR feels more natural to me. I also like the no spillover on FX. Also the HR sounds fuller and a bit less fizzy to my ears. Definitely keeping the HR and really considering selling the PODGO. The HR has less switches which is ok because I have a Line6 HX FX I'm going to hook up to the HR via 4 cable method.

I dont know what advantage Helix has, but i know the Helix has a huge flaw. DSP limit. If you plug two amps on the same line (in parallel), you cant do anything else on that line. Sure you have two effects chains on the Helix, but what if you want the delay and reverb on the end of your effects chain while keeping your distortion/overdrive/Effects on the first chain? As far as i know, the headrush allows you to use even 8 amps in parallel. Only advantage Helix would have is the number of users, since that gives me plenty of resources online to find patches and etc. Otherwise its a weaker unit than the Headrush in my opinion.

I have the a Headrush but I tested the Helix before i bought it. Why i chose the Headrush is because of the sound quality. Especially the distortions are more natural. With the Headrush you can hear 6 strings where the Helix makes 1 distorded electronic tone. Most FX like delay’s, chorus, etc….the Helix does good job and yes Helix has more FX. Personally i don’t use that much. I just want the basic FX and good Amp simulations….so the choice was easy. Headrush blows the Helix away…

I had the Headrush for around 6 months, after which it broke.... There was a loose footswitch I wanted to tighten, because it was not registering presses sometimes. So I opened the unit to hold the swith from the inside, else it would be spinning. Put it back together and it wouldn't boot anymore only said Loading" in the screen and had an empty rig in the background. Tried everything I could find on the internet, reinstalled the firmware, left it running for almost 2 hrs in this state - nothing. It was still under warranty so I gave it to the shop I bought it from, they told me they will send it to Headrush for inspection. After almost a month I finally got an answer - the device is irreparable and since it is sold out for weeks on end they cant replace it.... Got my money back and ordered a Helix Floor Gold Edition (was cheaper than the standard black and I kinda like the contrast it has between the gold and black). I now have it for around a month and a half and man I do love all the options it has over the Headrush: Extended routing options, the built in cabs with adjustable mic distance, early reflection etc. Also the processor seems much more powerful and I can't get it to be "overloaded". I had one preset in the HR which gave me noticable latency even tho it was rather "simple": Input Gate - Pitch Shift (-3 semi tones) - Peavey - IR (Hesu 2x12 from Ola Englund) - Output As for sound neither unit is far superior in my opinion - they are pretty close to each other and on both I can create the sounds that I am after without problem. The only thing I miss from the HR is the touchscreen, that is one of the best features it had. To compensate for that the Helix can be edited with "HX Edit" from the PC which is also quite nice, because you can sit and play comfortably while dialing in a preset, instead of always bending down to the unit. Overall I think both units are excellent and it comes down to personal preference which is "better".

This subject is so hard to get your head around. Both units are excellent but are quite different in many ways. The Helix is a "tweaker's" delight. Given 10 minutes I could make the Helix patch sound identical to the Headrush. But it does seem that out of the box, the Headrush sounds very good straight away. The helix does have a learning curve. I hated mine until lockdown where all of a sudden I had time to tweak. I discovered that my dislike was based on my ignorance of how to properly use the unit. Rule 1 with the Helix, go to global settings and set the global eq to roll off below 100hz and above 7.5khz. Then the unit starts to sound like a guitar amp instead of a fuzz pedal. There are so many other things you can adjust to sculpt your sound and I think this is part of the issue between the two units. The HR is just not as versatile, it gets 75% of the job done very well but falls short in the last 25%. Having said that, for 90% of guitarists the 75% is more than enough. I know I'd be more than happy with the HR as I'm in that 75% range myself. I'll just never need all the functionality that my Helix has. I'm very tempted to buy a HR to see if I'm right because the one HUGE drawback for me is the woefully bad looper in the Helix. If I'd known how bad it was I would never have bought it, also the tuner is poor too. Thanks so much for you excellent comparison, it has rekindled my interest in the HR. (BTW, I also use an AXE FX8 live and it sounds superior to the Helix the way the HR does in your video. It just sounds more " Ampy" and organic than the Helix - wow, I almost talked myself into an HR) Peace to all of you 😎
