Paul Hindmarsh takes us on a tour of the easy-to-use HX One ultra-compact stereo effect pedal including the flux controller that enables you to adjust multiple effect parameters simultaneously over a predetermined period-all with a single footswitch press, plus the inputs and outputs.
HX One is a powerful stereo effect pedal with intuitive controls that fits onto any pedalboard. Select one of 250+ effects taken from the acclaimed HX family processors and easily adjust the parameters displayed on the OLED screen using the three corresponding knobs. You can also automate parameter changes via the unique Flux controller and trigger them with the Tap/Flux footswitch. Connect an optional expression pedal or two external footswitches for additional control. HX One also provides adjustable input impedance; a choice of True Bypass or buffered DSP Bypass; MIDI In and Out/Thru connectors; 128 Presets; and a USB-C port for firmware updates and use with the HX One Librarian application. HX One may be powered using the included 9V power supply or most third-party power supplies, making it easy to add to your pedalboard.

Thank you for making this pedal for people like me, who can't be bothered with presets and menu diving (basically your other pedals lol), but want a high quality, single wild card to sit next to my favorite tried and true pedals. I'll definitely be buying one of these one day!

A brilliant idea. Something small enough to fit on a PedalTrain nano, or to add in the effects loop of an HX Stomp (or after it) to provide effects for, say, 4 cable method with the Stomp into the front of the amp, and the One in the FX Loop. I'm sure other companies will, as usual, follow in the footsteps of Line 6!

It looks like a fine addition to the Line 6 product range, bringing the M5 up to date with better hardware and the HX models, but it's doing nothing new, just catching up with some of the others in this space. Tap the flux button and it's like 2 snapshots of the same effect. That's nice, but not new and it's a feature designed to overcome a limitation (preset load time) with the nice enhancement of being able to program transition time. Using an expression pedal to morph is doing what so many others already do.

I think this can have several approaches to use, due to the number of effects it includes, gain, delay, modulations, filters, reverbs and even compressors and equalizers, all for guitars, basses, keyboards, etc. In a studio, where many times you record each effect line independently and you have this HX One where you configure and record, this also for recordings or productions, or simple layout at home or on the road. For live, it can be a total replacement for those that use a "Delay DL4" and "M5" together (I have them and I think I will proceed to sell them and get the "HX One" that has more effects in a larger size. reduced), just adding a Midi controller and you free up a lot of space on the pedalboard. And for live sessions, depending on the musical genre, where you don't need to bring a complete pedal board, not even a mini pedalboard, you would just bring this one and that's it.

What I could not find in any videos is if this peace is a real multi-effect. I mean is it possible to use a classic Scenario like having a Reverb, Delay and Chorus at the same time? If so, how many effects simultaneously?

I have a Hx Stomp, and love it but I just got this to get a little more dsp out of it. Especially when I want to you poly pitch and stuff, is there a way to program this so I can use it with the hx stomp, using midi? So if I go on a certain preset then the effects on the hx one also changes accordingly?

What I would like to see from Line 6 is another amazing amp like the DT but maybe a 10w or 15w so it's not too heavy to carry but still with a 1x12 cab, and also a less expensive version of the HX stomp, I love the format but I think it's still too much, I wouldn't mind a version with less options of amps/cabs/effects as long as it had the same capabilities.

If I am allowed to express some criticism: I don't think the HX One is an optimal solution. It is a strong bang for the buck if you compare it with other single FX-pedals, and if I buy six FX-pedals for 50$ each, i might already hit the street price of this thing, but then I have six FX simultaneously and not one. I also really would have liked it to have these combined Amp/Cab-Blocks from the Helix as an effect to choose, so it would have given me the opportunity to put it into the signal-chain of a pedalboard and switch between two amp sims for example. And If I buy the additional controllers and expression-pedals to fully use this products potential, then money-wise I would be much better off with a POD GO or an HX Stomp, which are much more powerful-solutions for the money. Keep on rocking guys, love my Helix 🤘

HX 2 next? Same form factor with just amps/cabs to compete directly with the plethora of amp/cab modelers out there now. A smaller HX stomp sans effects for pedalboard players.

@@plutoniumzeppelin8164 If it was two effects, you'd be complaining that it wasn't 3. Truth is, L6 M5 and Eventide H9 are hugely successful products used by amateurs and professionals alike. This is the update to the classic M5. It's also actually a pretty great value when you compare apples to apples with the new price of an Eventide H9 Max or anything from Strymon in a similar form factor.

This gives me an idea. Say you add an expression pedal with it and have one set of effects that transitions into another set of effects when you use the pedal. Say you have a clean ambient reverb at the bottom, but as you slowly engage the pedal, it transitions to an overdrive/ chorus/ delay. I feel like that would open up some new doors 😎

Yeah you’ll need about 3 or 4 depends on how many effects you’ll need. No none has time while playing onstage to mess with switching settings and and all the great stuff it does. It’ll be great for the studio though to mess with 👍

@@jaktje The HX Effects is 9 effects at the same time. This One is 1 effect at the same time. It would have been much better if it was a happy medium of 3/4 effects, but even 2 effects would have been good enough. 1 effect for that price doesn’t make sense.

I definitely would like to have a small pedal that can run multiple effects simultaneously. Maybe HX Stomp is a good alternative, but it's still bigger, and its UI/UX is outdated. I hope Line 6 will update HX Stomp with touch screen or provide editor app on smart phones via Bluetooth. Zoom MS-50G+ or Hotone Ampero Mini can do similar tasks but no MIDI.

Is it true that you can’t save the effects on bypass? Every time I try, the effect goes back to ON when saving. I contacted Line6 and an agent said it’s not possible. So if I’m using the pedal live with an external midi switcher like I do with the M5, and I start scrolling, the effects engage automatically and will sound. That makes impossible to scrolling in a live situation. And makes this a toy and not a pro tool. Line6 missed a big one here, I hope you make an update soon and include all the things that the M5 does already, like being able to save the presets in bypass. The tuner doesn’t work on true bypass neither. I’m really disappointed with this thing so far! Please hurry up with that firmware update so we can feel we gave you $ for something useful!

It's not like you have to use the same effect forever. Use a flange on one song, a funky delay on another song, a harmonizer on a third...

They have so many variations of the Helix tech now, you could get the Stomp or the Effects. I don't think this one would be for me but I'm sure somebody will find it useful, price is competitive with a lot of digital delays and reverbs and the flux thing is interesting.

One incredibly huge disadvantage of this design is the formidable distance between your eyes and the floor - especially on stage. There is absolutely no reason why the two foot switches can't be on the floor while all the rest of it - the parts that use your eyes and hands on - can't be mounted on a mic or music stand. Why is this such a hard lesson for Line 6 to learn?

@AudacityWorks Quad Cortex is the next gen. it's way smaller and more powerfull. It has some smart features like rotating buttons. It has its own issues, but, nevertheless, it's next gen.

Quad Cortex is newer but it's no more next gen than Fractal, Helix, or Kemper. The amps sound nothing like the real thing and the effects are weak. The capture engine is great but Tone X is better. The rotating buttons are not smart because they were copied from TC Electronic. The company is pretty shady too.@@sergiomatievich

Mini units are always done so at a sacrifice of power or usability. Prioritising power is a smart move. This unit will need a manual on hand while you’re initially figuring it out, but it doesn’t seem like it’ll take too long to adapt to it

@@GearStuffandThings - Are you being snarky? lol And no, the Fender Tone Master Pro is the most user friendly. I've effed with the Line 6 stuff for over a decade and it's confusing AF. I would think their newer products would phase that out, but no. This video is an example of how to overcomplicate something that could've been very simple to use.

It may not be useful to you but there are many instances in which it might be for others. Perhaps a person wants to try out a bunch of FX to make an informed purchase on a specific pedal they would like to have. Perhaps a person wants to use it for a cover band situation and needs one sound for specific songs. There are always variables and extenuating circumstances per player. So rather than poo-poo the product because it doesn’t apply to your use case maybe think of it in terms of the benefits it might have for others.

Come on… $300 for a supposedly “improved” M5? One can easily find an HX Effects or even HX Stomp for less than $400 used. That’s just ridiculous. Make a new M9 with a smaller footprint and weight,and usb connections and sell it for $320.

Same as Phil McKnight - you're using it as a desktop effects box. PUT THE THING ON THE FLOOR - and show us how easy it is to change patches etc. Crap review.
