Line and Wash Birch Trees. Watercolor Demonstration. Quick and Simple.

Another Line and wash as I continue to experiment with Arches Cold Press Paper.
It was done from imagination/memory without a reference photo. I simply went outside and looked at the birch trees on our property.
MATERIALS
I'm using a rather worn out Pigma Micron 005 nib pen.
It creates nice scratchy, sketchy lines.
PAPER. Arches Cold Press 1401b. I normally use Hot Press paper so this is somewhat of a learning experience for me as well.
MY PALETTE: All tube paints!
Winsor newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Red, Davy's Gray, Ultramarine, Sap Green.
DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep.
BRUSH:
A Polar Flo 1/2 inch flat brush
is my current favorite.
The bristle were originally white
but have become stained.
I often use inexpensive brushes
because several of my techniques are quite abusive.
Whenever the brush disappears from the screen,
it is either being wiped off or rinsed.

I "subscribed" you quite a while ago - but I had not seen this one until just today. I really (really!) love this quick study! I've always liked birch trees - and I've tried to "capture" their look in watercolor many times. Much to my dismay - I've (mostly) failed ~ and now I see my problem ... I need to ZOOM IN! I love the level of detail you got in this little painting! Thank you Peter!!

I have to confess up front, I used to think line and wash was kind of cheating watercolor, but you have changed my mind! In reality, it's perfect for my skill set. I'v been struggling with watercolor for a year or more, and I have a few keepers, and much wasted expensive paper. I'm going to try this, thank you for the demo.

It's new to me as well, and I love it because it gives me the chance to draw! It also is such a great entrance into the watercolor experience. It's fun, and the rewards are quick to see, success with a pen and a little watercolor!

Hi Peter, I painted along with this but had a problem painting in the sepia shrubbery after painting the green background. My paper was too dry so the color did not bleed. Your sap green must have been very wet. I may try wetting the paper first before I paint the background.
@PeterSheelerart
@PeterSheelerart 8 лет назад
Wet into Wet is all about timing. Takes some practice to learn. Each paper reacts different as well. Try wetting your paper various amounts and paint into. You'll get a feel for it.

Sorry if I'm late to the party, because this is awesome, but it looks like you have untethered half pans of paint in your palette or watercolor sticks. Is that so? Because it looks like a great idea.

@PeterSheelerart
@PeterSheelerart 8 лет назад
+Terry Stevens . Terry, you can't see the forest for the trees? Actually, I painted the shadow side of the birches. That's why the green background is so bright.
@terrystevens8890
@terrystevens8890 8 лет назад
+Peter Sheeler Lol. I thought of that cliche too. But for me, I just had a hard time separating the trees from the forest. All the colors seem to blend together. Maybe it's just my eyes. I've been told that "I can't see the forest for the trees" so you're probably right ! 😄
@JohnCooperWilliam
@JohnCooperWilliam 8 лет назад
I loved the layering of color right up to the last addition of pthalo blue. All the colors seemed to blend beautifully to trick my brain into seeing a white birch tree in a shaded woods.
@PeterSheelerart
@PeterSheelerart 8 лет назад
+John Cooper Alright. How 'bout this excuse. I'm not used to the Cold Press paper. Yeah, that works for me ;)
@JohnCooperWilliam
@JohnCooperWilliam 8 лет назад
+Peter Sheeler I wasn't being critical. I was amazed at how all the colors came together to suggest shade and shadow. the bright blue in the shadow just drew my eye but upon second viewing I kinda like it. I think your sketches look far better with this new paper.
