Line6 POD GO is often reviewed, but never showing the inside out as it is here! I show you exactly what you get, how to use the hardware and software, the supplied amps, cabs and all effects and offer an insight that others don't.
Contents:
0:00 Start
0:12 Preamble and Introduction
2:37 The POD GO Inside The Unit
3:51 The Main Board
4:14 Main SHARC Processor
5:58 Volume Pedal Inside
6:57 Assembly Warnings!
7:30 Connecting The Pedal
8:07 The Rear Panel
11:55 The Power Supply
13:16 Reasons To Look Inside
15:26 CE Approvals from Line6
16:12 Design Stupidity
16:28 The Manuals
17:07 Computer & POD GO
18:17 Connecting the POD GO
& Hardware Use
36:45 The Editor & Closeup Overview
37:40 How to Use The Software
51:51 Effects, Amps & Cabs
58:25 Keyboard Shortcuts
1:00:33 POD GO Shortcomings
1:02:36 Summing Up & Score
1:08:03 Examples & Playing
What you will learn:
Is the POD GO robust?
What does this unit cost?
Is this floor effects pedal easy to setup?
How does the POD GO sound?
Can anyone do this stuff?
The software looks hard to understand but is it?
This is a pretty long review because for the money there really is a lot to cover. The hardware alone you could spend hours discovering, but I show most of that here. Then there's the edit program supplied free with the unit.
I show the insides of the unit and the high quality of manufacturing. Then the external connections so you can get a good idea if this will work for you in your setup with your guitar. Then I take you through the workings of the editor program - a high quality Line6 piece of software.
I also offer some conclusions, some good and less good points that others never mention in their reviews and offer a score out of ten for the overall package.
Lastly, I show a few audio pre-sets, as well as some quality ones I bought from Jason Sadites and show the sort of result I achieved in this low cost effects unit for guitar - the results of the Line6 Pod Go and the pre-sets could be surprising especially for the price overall for this unit.
So is the Line6 POD GO an equivalent of or a 'baby' Helix? Check this review to find out and then make your own conclusions. I have already made up mine with a suitable conclusion.
I have spent considerable time creating these videos at entirely my expense:

Honestly, your videos aren’t first ones I watch when I just start leaning about a product. BUT once I learn the high level basics elsewhere, and when I think that it’s something I really want, your videos are usually about the last ones I watch since they are SO deep and detailed. They help with the final decisions.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 2 года назад
That's a fair point Michael. Whatever it is I always try and show the insides because that is a good basis to see if the product is great (and might have a long life) or whether it's thrown together and they don't care (some companies are like that these days). Some of these in depth reviews have content that is best suited if you have one or want to really know what you're letting yourself in for by way of software etc. Thanks for your feedback on this video - its appreciated and thanks for watching which always matters.

Awesome review! I picked up a Pod Go back in September to replace my 10-year-old Floor Pod Plus. I had generally gone ampless over the past few years, using the Floor Pod live and in the studio, after getting tired of dragging a half stack or my Evil Twin around. If I want to run a speaker cab I run the Pod Go into the effects in of my Evil Twin. The Pod Go gives me all the horsepower I need for shows or recording, with more amp/cab choices than I would ever need. I uploaded dozens of IR's onboard as well. The update from last week added three amps (based on a Fender Princeton, the Diezel VH4 Lead and VH4 Mega), two cabs (based on Fender Princeton 1x10 and 1x12), and 8 new effects including fuzz boxes and a Boss HM-2. The biggest complaint I've heard in reviews is a lack of routing options but I don't need to run complicated signal paths. Is the Pod Go a Boogie Triple Crown? Nope. Does it offer killer tones for 1/4 of the price of a Helix or Kemper? Yep. If you like spending tons of money and spending all day programming get one of those. If you want killer tone and simplicity, get a Pod Go. Thanks for the video and all the best from the Bay Area! MK
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 3 года назад
Ha I still have not got to the update yet... but I will so thanks for the heads up on that. I think you generally get what you pay for re routing and they will never include it all for the costs... similarly with the Roland GT-1000CORE... They all seem to cut back here and there. Good points on ease of use for sure... but the Helix is not that hard and the Kemper is not too bad. The GE300 I reviewed recently was pretty good but let down a bit by the software. There are a lot of pretty well priced units out there these days and the POD GO I thought was not a bad device at all and if I was gigging that would work fine I agree. Thanks for the info of how you found this stuff because users of the gear I always like to hear what they say about it all. I have so long in general with the stuff and then look for the next - Ha I can't be a real musician :). In any case thanks again for those comments they will help many guys I'm sure. I never made the Bay area... maybe one day. I have a friend there that I knew when he was leaving college, he went to the USA and lives there still - he comes over occasionally... he has been through it family wise - very sad, but a great guy. In any case stay safe...

As I said in your mx5 review, thank you very much. You opened my eyes. I was debating between those two, now I will buy the pod go. Big step for an old school guy, but amps seems to weight more with the years. Cheers
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 2 года назад
Well I guess all these type of units have some good and some less good points. I don't think there is a 'perfect' one out there, but they are very interesting devices. I have a Kemper and a Helix and I like both of them in their own way really. I have seen near enough all the different ones (just a few to catch up) and they are all useful in one way or another. Variance of sounds (to a degree) between them and the usability aspect is also variable depending on which unit someone buys I think. But as you say also, these are much lighter than the heavy amps. I have been moving all mine around recently with the studio upgrade and man some of those amps weigh a ton... picking them up by myself is a real task these days - so the little simulators are certainly useful in that respect. I like my amps though and because they are not often moved around I'll keep most, but I might sell off a few once the studio is complete. Anyway, once you have used the POD Go for a while come back again and post your opinion! That will always help someone. Thanks.

Great point... I'm always attracted to watching fast rock etc... but you are right... I'll never forget hearing the version of 'don't believe a word' as released on 'back on the streets' I think it was 73 or something... to this day I STILL listen to that lead guitar - its an embodiment of a master at work - and when Gary Moore played the slow melodic stuff it's hard to think of someone better at that style. I have to say that for me he was really one of the unforgettable guys if you ever saw him live... I watched him in Birmingham UK in the early 80's (or some time then) and the last thing he played was 'The Loner'. Hmmm I could have easily sold all my gear immediately as a minion with little chance of ever being like that. Ha I still fumble around... but that's OK... its great fun. Stay safe Michel.

No I agree, honestly most of the sort of area nd price of many brands is sort of similar with a few caveats depending on which unit someone buys. I like looking at them even though there are quite a few and every time I do you know either this one, or some other one has a feature or other that should be on them all :) We can all see these units and actually making a choice almost from just 'sales' videos I always found frustrating, hence the real look at them. Great content Tony.I bought one of these when they just came out and i have to say I love it.Nothing to touch it price wise.I play a lot of country and I found it had little or no presets worth talking about but as I became more familiar with the unit I started to build my own effects patches and that’s when it came into its own.Let’s face it Line 6 took a hell of a kicking for their earlier multi effects units (the helix was a real game changer) but I think they nailed it with this little unit and for a shade under £400.00 !! .Hope you and yours are keeping well.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 3 года назад
Good to know you have one... and I can agree that pre-sets are what they are. I bought some from Jason Sadites... but truthfully if anyone buys pre-sets they will still sound like you no matter what :) Making your own tones is always the way to go and this unit I think is easy enough to get someone making their own easily. Often on some of this gear there is a mountain to climb regarding the learning curve from what I see - and nothings changed since when I first saw one back in 2011. In fact some of it has become so complex ha its simpler and often better just using an amp. The HD500 series was a dog. I remember it well and I commented in this video about the 'pilots guide' and how I 'crashed and burned' - that was a direct quote from my HD500 pedal.. many might disagree but honestly it was not for me. The Helix I bought when it came out and it had a similar effect on me that the Kemper did in early 2012... that changed the status at the time of the 'best' amp simulator IMO and it became Kemper. Today Kemper is I do feel old technology and I have been guessing a little as to when they will rework that ten year old product and I reckon this year - put back because of all the worldwide aggro we all have seen. I later bought a Helix rack and I have no qualms about doing that - it remains a great unit for a great price. The POD Go shows what can be done for little money. And the fact is, my guess is they could have offered even more for the same price, except that they want to sell different level products. As a simulator this one I thought was/is pretty good and you have to spend more to get better. Thanks for your info on this unit - I always love to hear from people and users of the gear because you will know what I know (and maybe even more than a casual user like me) and that for this price point this is a great device. Thanks for watching and stay safe.

Hi Tony I've had this one for a week and have to say it's really good especially for the money! Iam 55 and not really tech savvy but even a old idiot like me can get some great tone's from it, I soon realized putting it in a power cab just disable the cabs on every patch and just use my old ear's when building patches! Thanks for your upload mate 👍🙏🐱

No you're not an idiot at all. In fact one of the things I always try to mention is that everyone is NOT a computer scientist and the complexity of equipment in the simulators sector is really important... guys most often want to play and not sit there for weeks trying to learn it all. It's not a bad device and I own a Helix rack which is similarly toned (they say). Great to hear you like the POD GO and thanks for watching... apreciated.

@tonymckenziecom 3 года назад
Hey Mark, we all look at gear in a continuing way and it matters not what we have, we are ALWAYS looking for 'that' piece of gear that will sort of do it for us... :) you like me will never find it. I have used so much gear, and some of it has been a right stinker while other stuff has been instantly gratifying and its that little difference that drives me (and likely you and everyone else) towards the gear we love. Others might even dislike the gear we like, but it matters not. As long as it's good for the player then it's good. I think Fractal Audio has lots of competition and I think the days of £2500.00 for a piece of gear in that sector is pretty much over. The Quad Cortex might see to that at £1300.00. I think the Kemper is over priced too for a nine year old piece of gear! So it's not 'all' FA at all, its just that when a company has no respect for its customers I tend to speak to them in Russian... well, at least every other word ends in 'off' ;-) Thanks fir the info and for watching.

@Tony... yes... I've been at the forefront of these machines since the beginning... I can tell you how bad the Zoom9000 was, and its competition, the Johnson tabletop preamp, as well... I got into them with the chameleon... racked w midi control and a PV5050 power amp... was amazing... but it's price point in 89' was 1400 us... comparable to a 3000 us Fractal. As an early DAW user, Cool Edit, Cakewalk... Turtle Beach cards... I needed something to do desktop work... almost every recording I've ever done has been with an interface like the PODGO... BTW: try using the amp out of the pod into a mono pwr amp and speaker, then the main outs in stereo to pwr amp and speaker... really wonderful tone... Ala Lukathers' Mesa 3 way rig... back, in the day... new update avaliable for the PodGo... get to assign fs 7/8 for efx block combinations... Thanks again for replying.

@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 3 года назад
Maybe not. I don't think the LT has the limitations that this GO has on it. But for the £400 (around $550 or so) who can complain. I think its very suited to get guys in the general area of simulators for a low cost... a great learning tool really. I'm going to review the MOOER GE300 which has been out a year or so since launch and for the difference in price (about £150 or $200 maybe) it sounds and is far superior to this POD Go IMO even from just looking at it for 15 minutes. To be fair I have not really done much on the GE300 but right from the off it sounded better to my ears. Its a nicer finish too. Look on the POD Go and you'll see those welded nuts all over the place - not so on the GE300 - a very nicely finished off product. In any case that will be coming up... and it has the ability to 'capture' amps and speakers and stuff so it could be interesting. Thanks and stay safe.

@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 2 года назад
Great question. It's actually hard to 'recommend' gear... let me explain. What might be great for me, might not for you. My advice is to consider some of the most important things re your music and how you play. For example, you might NEED loads of active 'blocks' (effects, etc), or you might NEED a long looper for example. Only you can answer those things. What I can offer is that looking at both devices they are sort of similar re the quality really, its the editing, the releases of updates, the flexibility of the unit when using it (does it fit you) and of course warranty considerations if there are differences. For example the GT-1000CORE can handle about 26 blocks, whereas lower cost units offer less usually. BTW I'm only mentioning the GT-1000CORE its not some sort of recommendation either way. I Hope you get the jest of my comments and sincerely I do hope they help by pointing you in a particular direction. Thanks for watching.

@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 3 года назад
Ha I can't make your mind up for you! :) But what I would say is this... if you want a pedal of this genre and need a choice of a sort of 'conventional' one then the Line6 POD GO could be for you. However, if you want a pedal of similar genre but with more bells and whistles (and don't forget that capture ability for your amp, speaker and even effects pedals - yes really) then the GE300 is the better choice. They are both well enough made to serve you well. The GE300 software is slightly less complex and not as aesthetically presented to the user but overall both pedals are cool. You won't go wrong with either IMO. The GE250 also has a capture facility so still is in the same ball park. Hope it helps and thanks for watching. Stay safe.

Greetings. How would this device compare to something truly budget, such as the Boss GT1, purely in terms of audio quality. Would the price difference (thrice as much) be justified. Thanks!
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 2 года назад
That's a great question IMO. The GT1 has a reasonable sound of course especially for that money (my grandson has the one I reviewed some while back here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gnVwNlpUUTs.html ). But things move on and the Line6 POD GO is an overall better product in many ways... from the technology, through the use, and importantly the sound. Remember that as you rightly say it IS far more expensive, and as far as a comparison of the tone improvements (in particular) only a guitarist that tries both units will really be able to decide the value/worth to their own playing ands style (which IMO should be taken in to account). It's a great question because its so easy for anyone to say this or that one is better but really 'better' is a very funny word because it becomes subjective to the guitarist using the gear. My personal opinion is that it IS worth the difference, but I could also cite a number of other 'similar' devices that could also equally be up for comparison once you hit the Line6 level of cost. Check my above review of the GT1 and see what you think! Thanks for watching.

@@tonymckenziecom Thank you so much for such a lucid reply. Will check out your GT1 review for sure. If I were to ask you recommend a device which would be good enough to use on an EP / album which would it be. In the Pod Go’s price range. The Headrush MX5 was my other option but it doesn’t seem to be available where I live. Also, unfortunately, I do not have the luxury of trying out these devices where I live. Apologies for all the questions :)
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 2 года назад
I have reviewed many devices from the MOOER, through the MX5, even the GT-1000CORE. Have you checked those out? You should because I cover most aspects of each device and there is always some playing on each review so you can get an idea (albeit my style) of the tones I achieve with short recording times and quick setups... and that does matter because its likely similar tones that most might get from plugging in and go without weeks of messing about. Obviously there are a range of products in (roughly) the same sort of cost area. And there is more too it than 'just' tones although obviously those are the most important. But also consider the number of objects you can have in the audio path. For example the GT-1000CORE has (if I remember) 24 and the MX-5 considerably less. In a DECENT studio that might well not matter, but if you want to use the effects etc. and don't have a high level studio with many pro effects then maybe that all matters. To many I guess it would - and of course for live use too. I personally like the GE3000, the GT-1000CORE and there are others such as the imminent release of the GX-100 which you should look at (I'm waiting for that unit to arrive for review) and I'll be showing everything I can find about it as soon as I can. For my other reviews look here: ru-vid.com/group/PL6E22694F35860D41 which has 81 reviews in there of older and newer gear.
@accentontheoff
@accentontheoff 2 года назад
@@tonymckenziecom I am considering the GX-100 and will also check out the Mooers now as well as the GT 1000 Core. The Pod Go became attractive to me as it stands right at the edge of what I want to spend. And the GT1 I suspect punches well above its weight class, which is why I narrowed it down. But you are right, there’s a lot more in more or less the same budget area. Will check out all the other ideas (and videos as well) that you threw in there as well. Thanks!

100V-240V usually means the power supply has some sort of PFC or regulation stage in it, probably to eliminate 50/60Hz ripple on the output. your typical wall-wart power supply is unregulated and will have some 50/60Hz ripple (100/120Hz really), which could translate to some unwanted humMmMmM in the audio path. Maybe that's why they say "use ours only"... or maybe they just want to sell power supplies...

Switched mode PSU used everywhere I guess and rarely offer any real issues - at least on the ones I have generally seen - but you might know better than me so thanks for pointing that out. I do think they want to sell PSU's though :) Stay safe.

I watched that vid where you named that certain American amp maker. And glad I was, as I was seriously considering buying that amp. Luckiliy, your vid steered me away from it and towards the Marshall JMC 800 Studio. Now what's kind of funny is that I'm using one of F'man's od pedals in front of the Marshall, and with outdstanding results I should add. Go figure.

Ha that's a great comment actually. It's not that I have some tussle with any maker of gear. But if I spent £1395.00 on something that should never have been sold, then I have always believed that should not be. It came to me, but how many guys would 'open up' an amp and worse still, how many guys would even know what they are looking at. In the case of the amp I had it was obvious but it might have been less so. For me, what it does is educate 'me' to the particular brand. I might have been 'unlucky' but it got past the maker (who did NOT make it), past all the QC, past the dealer in the UK who insisted that the switch I questioned was working 'exactly correct' (it was not) and then to poor old me for hard earned cash. I STILL have that video and it is a shocker video literally as bad as any brand I have ever seen and that includes Chinese low cost stuff. For me that brand is not something I will buy for reasons that are generally understood - I can't trust it! The SC20 JCM costs about £700 where I come from and works and is perfect inside. But you could use almost ANY pedal - the classic Tube Screamers being one of the best IMO (I remember being 6 foot from Michael Schenker al long time back and that setup with a full sized amp sounded so good) in front of those types of amps. And surely everything that other company makes is not as my amp was of course. But once it happens as it did to someone like me... I'm afraid I wont invest twice the price for something that was for me inferior to other stuff I could have bought. Ha I only swallow the bait once :) But you made a good point of course. Ha maybe I'm too set in my ways... once bitten twice shy so to speak. In any case thanks for watching and stay safe.

Wow! In your next videos followed after this one you started to show us chips used inside of every unit you reviewed. But right here I can't see even a DSP model shown and named! I'm so surprised because of that! Thus, could you please tell us here (write) about DSP SHARC chip exact model used here???!!! People said a DSP here is a little bit weaker than one that is used in HX Stomp model. But nobody mentions exact model names in both of them for comparison.
