Nope, a railgun works on a different principle. In short you have 2 parallel conductors (rails) and a conductive projectile. The projectile touches both rails and carries a current which produces a magnetic field in both the projectile and the rails. Those magnetic fields opose each other in a way that that the projectile gets shot parallel to the conductors.

If you staged 3 phase like this inline itd give you rotation but youd still get it to drive out. Much like a rifled barrel if you got your diameter close it'd be more effiecent too

@shakeb raza probably about the same cost. Rather than rotate a shaft powering belts, you're directly moving a ferrous material linearly. This method might be cheaper in the long run but depends on how often this method could become damaged due to pieces of metal sliding over the top of it

This system essentially creates a traveling field. The speed of the field is determined by the rpm’s of the controller.

Linear motors are very much a thing. This particular one is a good demonstration of a linear induction motor. It runs off three phase power. A 3 phase rotary motor has a rotating magnetic field set up while a linear induction motor has a magnetic field that moves in the linear direction. Just like a rotary machine a LIM also has terms associated with it such as slip, synchronous velocity, slip velocity etc. Instead of rpms its in m/s. The main difference from a solenoid is that a solenoid just has a stationary field that is set up and the coils usually enclose the magnetic element/plunger.

There are certainly motors where the coil side move themselves instead of moving the aluminum side. Essentially the two types are called long primary short secondary, and long secondary short primary. All electromagnetic induction trains would be long secondary short primary because the primary is much more expensive. If you can send me more information about your project I might be able to better advise you.

Since it is using a VFD it is going to be AC. The VFD essentially takes the 1 phase power from mains, rectifies it to DC, and then uses IGBTs to create a 3-phase AC current (along with being able to control the frequency too). VFD = Variable Frequency Drive.

Not 100%. Linear motor is the propulsion part of the train ... Not strictly the «levitation ». In maglev train levitation is done via similar process, but not strictly the part shown here. For levitation, you need to turn the coils 90° up ...

LIMs almost never make sense though... and even less so as a stepper. The lead screws on a 3d printer are already providing mechanical advantage.

@@Wingnut353 thats a good point, I was thinking it wouldn’t have the same mechanical advantage but it could have a speed and or precision advantage, its worth thinking about. Like I guess you get a rotational energy that can add up when you use a motor with like a belt but Im thinking of like a linear bearing that is actuated magnetically so not a ton of force, I don’t know if a rotating magnetic field actually increases the torque in a way that a linear moving field couldnt. I just don’t know enough to say one way or the other but I can see it being really useful and cuts down on components and cost as well

Not strictly. In a rail gun, the moving part receives current, not magnetic field. But it's possible to obtain similar results with both tech.
