Lines In Falcon And Winter Soldier That Mean More Than You Know

Disney+'s MCU miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was packed with super soldiers, aerial combat, buddy cop antics, and a whole lot of vibranium shield slinging. It also had plenty of fun callbacks to past MCU outings, from Captain America: The First Avenger to Avengers: Endgame.
Considering Captain America's long history in the comics and his massive legacy in the MCU, the dialogue in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is, as you'd expect, fraught with meaning for Marvel fans. But casual viewers may have been confused during some key moments. Here are the lines in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that mean more than you know.
#Marvel #TheFalconAndTheWinterSoldier #MCU

Something that was never once mentioned in all the discussions about the Super Serum, and the lack of mentioning it was a thing that bothered me, was the fact that neither Bucky, Sam nor Zemo ever mentioned that *Bucky did not take the serum by choice* it was forced upon him against his will, he’s a victim too and was (arguably) never corrupted. Other than Isaiah who was deceived into taking it & didn’t know what he was given until afterwards - Bucky is the only (active) Super Soldier to have not chosen to take the serum - which essentially destroys Zemo’s whole “Super Soldiers all desire supremacy” argument. A perhaps more accurate statement for Zemo’s beliefs would be that (with Steve being the exception) “all Super Soldiers who choose the serum willingly eventually seek supremacy”. The closest they get to actually discussing Bucky not choosing the serum but it being forced upon him, was when Sam and Zemo were talking while Bucky was out & Zemo stated that “Super Soldiers cannot be allowed to exist” & Sam knowing that they both know Bucky’s backstory & Zemo’s increasing ally bond w/ Bucky states plainly “If THAT’S how you feel, what about Bucky?” & Zemo stops to think about it as Bucky walks in and they both watch him. I think this ties greatly into the reasoning that Zemo has for not killing Bucky, since Zemo is a “justice killer”, and killing Bucky for something he had no control over, essentially killing him for being a victim, isn’t justice & Zemo can see Bucky actively working to be good, Bucky IS a GOOD MAN & he’s worthy of the opportunity for redemption and peace for himself.
@Jenonymouse

So much love for your comment! That bothered me too. Serum didn't corrupt him, but EXCESSIVE BRAINWASHING turned him into a puppet. Without further explaining it, they were making it seem like Bucky chose corruption because he didn't "overcome" what was done TO HIM. (At least not right away. I also don't like that Bucky wasn't given credit for eventually BREAKING FREE from Hydra... because Bucky had always been a good person underneath all the brainwashing.) The reality is that EVERYONE has a breaking point. The fact that Bucky survived his breaking point doesn't make him guilty for what was done to him, even though he's on the path to making amends for his actions, however out of control he was.
@Caulderone

I'm always late to the post. But thank you for posting this. Yes, Bucky was forced to take the serum. It's not something he sought out. I think it's pretty clear that something happened in The First Avenger. Then Steve figures it out in The Winter Soldier. I think it is part of the plot that the audience should already know. I think Zemo actually likes Bucky. Zemo knows Bucky is a victim. Sometimes I wish tv shows should go into detail about certain things, but I guess time is money. The series should have been at least ten episodes.

@@jinakaye Did it? Zola started his experiments on Bucky when he was captured for the first time so he already had his first shots when he was in Howling Commandos. Through all this time he was still good old Buck, Steve's guardian angel. That what happened to him later, becoming the Winter Soldier and doing all this bad stuff, wasn't a result of something that was in him and grow because of serum, or serum itself. It was because of constant tortures, manipulation to with he was more helpless because of loss of memory as a result of electroshocks . All kindS of abuse broke him, enslaved him, he was not even himself, not even a human really. Since he gets his freedom back, he did the right things. It could be the villain origin story, but turn out totally differently. The way he struggles with his past and suffers as a trauma victim shows it. His heart, was wounded but remained soft, caring, and loving while it could get cold and wicked. He still has a serum in him, but that's not the case, the serum found in him the too good stuff to be a problem ;)

@jinakaye
@jinakaye 3 года назад
@@agataledzwa1896: Actually, Bucky did NOT have the shot before his re-capture or he would not have fallen from the train. The first phase in the Winter Soldier Program was brainwashing. The second step was the serum. Bucky recognizes his darkness, which makes him more aware...that is what the Super Soldier serum did for him. It increased his intelligence and awareness. That is why he chooses to be good. He can slip back into W.S. mode anytime he needs to. He recognizes that he has already been corrupted and has to work to not allow that to dictate who he is now. Bucky is an amazing character and the perfect foil for Sam, but he is, technically, corrupted.
@agataledzwa1896
@agataledzwa1896 3 года назад
@@jinakaye He had something that made him survived the fall. Confirmed in CA: The Winter Soldier I mean, it depends on what do we mean by "corrupted". Steve is described as "uncorrupted" but he clearly wasn't flawless. Bucky has darkness in him but I think it's because of things that happened to him. Sure, it could be my misinterpretation, but I think after something like this, you just can't be a sweet summer child anymore. Like, that what you perfectly pointed out, his awareness and determination to control himself and fight this shadow of hydra in him are to me prove for that. Also, he always was a bit "darker" than Steve. Even in Brooklyn Steve always had this idealistic shine in all his actions, Bucky just did what had to be done. Just, I would use the word "wounded" or "broken" but not "corrupted by serum" because that suggests that that was a big bag of bad stuff in him before.
@karendowning7844
@karendowning7844 3 года назад
But Bucky has proven that he is pretty much a good man. In their young days Bucky protected the “little guy” Steve Rogers and was his best friend. He went to fight with Steve Rogers, Not Captain America. He wouldn’t leave Steve once Steve saved him, he stayed with Steve. Bucky only became bad because he was given drugs and was brain washed. Even when he was trying to kill Steve, there was something deep in him that was good and he didn’t kill Steve but saved his life. Once he knew who he was again he went back under because he couldn’t trust himself. He couldn’t live with that. Then once he was free of the brainwashing all he could think about was how he had killed people and he felt guilty. Inwardly he is also a good guy. It is unfortunate that he has been manipulated in such a horrible way in his life.
@oldkitten8598
@oldkitten8598 3 года назад
But Bucky's still struggling with what he had been put through for decades. Yes, Bucky is a good man, but he's not quite ready to take on the pressures of being Captain America. He acknowledged as much during that heart-to-heart with Sam and after they fought Walker in the warehouse -- he tossed the shield back to Sam. When Steve told him he was giving the shield/mantle to Sam, he supported that decision. He did then and still does now. BUCKY'S NOT CAPTAIN AMERICA -- LET IT GO!
@triloization
@triloization 3 года назад
@@oldkitten8598 I think Bucky should have his own life and identity. I am happy with Sam. He is the best possible choice. He is the Cap of a modern time. For Bucky I hope we will see him in Wakanda as support for who will be the next Black Panther. I hope he will not stay a side kick for cap and evolves to a more independent hero who can show up in different shows and movies.
@jinakaye
@jinakaye 3 года назад
Bucky is a good man, but what makes him different from Sam is that he'll always have hints of darkness due to that manipulation. He has the lived experiences of what it was like and, as much as he hated being controlled by other people, there were times when the rush of it felt good to him. That's why it did not take long for him to fall back into form, as Zemo stated. Bucky is a good person, but he's not ready to take on the mantle of Captain America. It will be interesting to see if he becomes the White Wolf...and, if so, that journey from the Winter Soldier to White Wolf. On a side note, Bucky did state that neither he nor Steve considered Sam's Blackness as a factor when giving him the shield. As wonderful as that might seem to the “colorblind” crowd, we see the reality of what that color blindness did. Bucky didn’t put 2 & 2 together about Isaiah until Sam brought it up. Once Bucky understood Sam's dilemma, he apologized. Sometimes, the lack of societal awareness is more harmful than good. Steve got away with never having to acknowledge the major changes he saw after his de-icing. Bucky has to face them because he had to acknowledge Sam's trauma. I’m glad Bucky is getting the chance to explore his own identity while Sam fulfills his destiny as the new Captain America.

What superhero shows should be. No heroes torturing people to death for practice (Arrow). How stupid or out of touch would a writer have to be to write a hero this way when most of the most evil supervillains don't even do that?
