www.crosstraini... Linkage guards for enduro bikes! The cheapest, best and make-your-own options. The really talented riders don't need them. They get over big obstacles with great technique and suspension linkage almost never hits the obstacle. It's also why the pro riders almost never have exhaust guards either, although Aussie rider Mitch Harper uses a Propower X-Link linkage guard in gold class hard enduro events. A billet alloy linkage guard. Need hard enduro training? Work through our video lists. The advantages? They are nearly indestructible. They are completely flat on the bottom so you can slide over rocks and logs. I had one of these a few years ago when I was learning to get over big rocks and logs. It took an incredible amount of abuse, this Propower X-Link linkage guard. The bottom of the Propower unit was gouged to pieces but it was still doing its job. Hard enduro techniques are covered in our training vids. I wish I had taken a photo. I was surprised it was still working well after so much punishment. There are two main options. The Australian-made Propower X-link is the cheapest at AUD299 which includes free worldwide shipping. It's also worth checking out their other Australian made gear - radiator shrouds, rear brake disc guards, carbon fibre exhaust guards and carbon fibre frame guards. Next is the Fastway linkage guard at US$274 which doesn't include shipping. This is usually US$70 outside of the USA so it's getting pretty expensive compared to the Propower X-Link linkage guard. Keen to hear your comments. Then there is us. The everyday muppets. The bottom of our suspension linkage takes a lot of punishment. If you have linkage suspension you should consider some protection - especially if you ride in gnarly terrain. And remember to let us know about linkage protection you have used and how much it cost. We will add useful information to the pinned first comment. Lets look at the cheapest options through to the most expensive. Do nothing. The linkage is designed to be fairly tough. Why aren't there more options? I know a guy who does CNC machining and he said products like this are very complex to design and it takes a long time to machine. Try our training vids for working on your extreme enduro techniques. The problem? They actually increase the chance of getting caught on obstacles. Three. If you are careful it's possible to minimise the impact of rocks and logs. In this video I was riding a borrowed Beta Xtrainer so I was being very careful with these logs. The main problem? It's easy for the linkage to catch on obstacles and bring you to a sudden stop. And it's harder to slide the motorbike over obstacles. It was surprising how often the linkage was caught and I had to lift the motorbike over logs. Two? You can buy these small guards that provide extra protection at the point of impact. The plastic ones are quite cheap. The alloy guards like this are more expensive at around US $90. Attach a plastic extension to your existing skidplate. If you are enduro riding get into our enduro training vids. Our dirt riding tips are great for developing your hard enduro skills. There are plenty of these available. Into enduro and dirt bikes? Check out our dirt bike videos. Extreme enduro training vids are our focus. Some riders even make their own extension using a thin plastic cutting board. Potential issues? It's only providing a limited amount of extra protection based on the thickness of the plastic. If it's very thin it will only absorb a certain amount of major impacts. Also the plastic is flexible so it's possible for the plastic to bend and still make it harder to slide over obstacles. But it will still be easier than no guard at all. It also explains the high price. But if you like riding in rough terrain it could be relatively cheap compared to damaging the linkage, clevis or rear shock. Do you use linkage protection? Did it work well? Expensive or cheap? If you want extreme enduro training see our playlists of enduro skills to learn.

1/4 inch thick poly skid plate extension. Tough light and durable.

I use the Enduro Engineering bolt on linkage guard. It was pretty cheap and bolts directly to the EE skid plate I'm running on the Sherco. No issues with it in the last two riding seasons.

I took two pieces of aluminium angle,(40x5mm equal) the same length as the linkage. Cut and drilled, and shaped. Works pretty well so far.

Most of my bikes are PDS... But the 2 with links have the first guard you've listed. Plastic doesn't catch on rocks. It's enough to protect the clevis. I've split the guard before. No big deal, have an extra on hand.

Great vid. Love the sound effects. I was always baffled why they don't come stock with linkage protection. Even plastic is better than nothing and for logs especially works fine to slide vs catch.

Cost cutting? It is strange as there are cheap ways to protect it.

Acerbis extension off of a TMDesigns skid plate. Slides over stuff nicely!

I'll definitely be making a trip to the kitchen store for a solid cutting board. I have damaged and repaired linkages before so "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

I found the skid plate beaver tails tend to get worn through by the linkage and snap off if you hit it a lot. I fitted a plastic guard as well that is much wider than the linkage so it distributes the load across the whole beaver tail instead of just a small area in the middle. It definitely helps the beaver tail last longer if you are having issues with them wearing through and snapping.

I use the Xtreme axp/moose skid plate it is Polyethylene and has an extra thick linkage guard with a wear bloke that can be replaced and it is quiet compared to metal and slides across logs and rocks better to but it is a little pricey.

I use the bolt on skid plate extension from dowa tek on my se300 sherco that comes with the axp skid plate from factory. Glued and bolted 1cm think rubber of a conveyor belt on it to addidionally damp the impakts. Works for 95hours now.

I was wondering for a little bit why I had never needed this part (I find the weak links by breaking them, so to speak) but then I realised I've been using home welded skid plates that I cut to size so they cover anything that looks fragile/grabby. I also try to dent them so water is directed away from my feet when I drive through it. Then you mentioned a single one of those things is 300 bucks and I realised my bikes are literally not worth the protection. On my last offroad bike I ended up getting an entire wingarm with linkage and pins+bushings (not even broken ones!) for around 150 euros. I only needed the chain guard off it but the extra parts ended up being very nice.

Really good point. I can't see any point in spending a lot of money if you don't really need to. Generally if you aren't hitting the linkage regularly on logs and rocks it probably doesn't need protection. And there are cheap ways to protect it. We only opt for the best protection because we are constantly bashing that linkage on every ride....

Same here. I'd much rather glide over logs than have allegedly better rear suspension at speed.
